I have a (EUR) game of Mario kart 7 (legit cartridge) and I want to play it online on my 3DS XL
Problem is that I don't have the update for Mario Kart, meaning I cant play online.
My 3DS XL is on 4.4 since I also use it for Gateway.
Would it be possible to get this Mario Kart update in some way?

Extra info: I also have a 4.5 regular 3DS on which I am able to play Mario Kart 7, since I had that one way longer and used to play Mario Kart online on that.
I just prefer my XL over my regular 3DS and want to be able to go online with my XL now.

I am also curious whether or not my 3DS and 3DS XL could play together over WIfi if I would put an (EUR) rom of MK7 in one of my two 3DS' and the legit game in the other, seeing as one of them would have the MK7 patch and the other doesn't (but I suppose I could find that out myself....)

This is not possible, as I think eShop game update downloads are tied to the console they're downloaded on (could be wrong on this), so somehow transferring to your 3DS XL via SD card won't work.

You can't get the patch without a complex procedure involving a hardware modification. What you can do a lot more easily is download the scene release of Mario Kart that has the update built in, make sure it's the one from your region. Then patch it with the header from your own cart (see the How To Play Online yadda yadda thread), and it will work online.

I've got an old cartridge of Mario Kart (not rev 1) and I wanted to play online on the Gateway with its save, so I took the header from the cartridge and I put it into a rev 1 rom, so the header was the same of my original cartridge and of my save, and then I also renamed the rom in .3dz, but when I was trying to boot it on the Gateway the only thing I gained was the message about data corruption. Why it doesn't work for me? Excuse me for my bad english, tell me if I'm not clear please.

You can't link any rom sites. Also, it's probably because the v1 version needs a slightly different game-based header, and if that's the case you simply can't use your old save.

I'm on firmware 9.2 and my Mario Kart 7 wants an update but I don't want to update the firmware.
The e-Shop doesn't work. I do have a Gateway but I need to use the retail cartridge for going online because Spider3DSTools doesn't work on emuNAND. Any solutions besides buying an updated copy of Mario Kart 7?

I'm pretty sure you can download the update with a linked emunand, then go back to sysnand and use the update :)

And yeah, I think Henning's solution would work. Thought of that myself as well

Thanks for the additional help, but it is not necessary anymore.
With the Gateway updates to play online with your own dumps and several updates to enable emunand support I was able to access the e-shop to do the update for mario kart using emunand and I can now play both my legit and own dump on GW cart versions of the game.

Easy :)

You have gateway, so you have emunand installed, if you have the latest 9.5 as emunand fw, you can go ahaed:

Things you have to have:
- Gateway Emunand 9.5
- Internet setup in emunand
- eShop access (NNID) (Not sure if this is needed for an update)

Boot into gateway menu (Hold "L" while booting the DS Profile) and choose classic
insert your original Mariokart 7 in the 3ds xl and wait a few seconds, you will see the scrolling notification about an update for the game
press "A" and then press "Y", update will install and after the update you can play online in classic mode.

This will not let you play online on 4.x with the gamecart in, you need to boot Gateway emunand (classic booting is not needed once the update is installed)

I have done it this way and it works perfect

Thanks for the additional help, but it is not necessary anymore.

Ok, seems i was a bit to fast in reading :), seems you already solved your problem ;)
