Steam had announced their "big 3" announcement months back, one of them involving In-Home Streaming, the process of streaming games from one PC to another. Today, Steam has finally updated to make this available to all users!

WITH IN-HOME STREAMING YOU CAN...
Play your Windows games on devices running other operating systems
Currently Mac OS X, Linux, and SteamOS, with support for more systems coming soon.

Play your demanding games on lower-end systems
System requirements dictate the rig you’ll need to run your game, but with In-Home Streaming they won’t limit where you can play.

Kick back with your laptop or home theater PC
Your Steam games are now available throughout your home when you stream them from your PC to your computer, netbook, laptop, or HTPC.

I have been toying with RDP for a little while now for this, hoping I will one day be able to attach it to virtualbox's RDP. That said if Steam want to make thing more of an option then I am quite OK with that.

My instant thought: "Well we have an RPi sitting around our flat doing nothing... this gives me an idea" *googles it* "Oh... no Steam for RPi (cause ARM) and the best RPi solution requires an Nvidia Graphics card. Fuck."

Still. I'm thinking of buying a cheap Windows 8 x86 tablet. It may get some use when I feel like showing off to people.

Just gave it a try myself with Dark Souls 2, there appears to be minimal or no input lag (if there is, it's something like half a second or something along those lines, nothing too noticeable), but other than that it's pretty fantastic. I had Dark Souls 2 downscaled from 4K on my desktop to 1080p, and then that was downscaled to my laptop's 1366x768 and there was no noticeable lag or decrease in video quality. Audio quality could have been better, it was a little quiet, but otherwise this service works pretty well.

Now I can stream shit to my laptop or my Shield

My first thought was "damn...and I just removed steamOS". But by the looks of it, that doesn't even matter.

I must really give this a try and check out UT3 or sleeping dogs on a pentium 4 running mint. :P

Also:

Currently Mac OS X, Linux, and SteamOS, with support for more systems coming soon.

Does this mean you cannot stream from windows machine to windows machine?

You can stream from windows to windows. You need to have Vista or newer though.

Anyways, my laptop is my main gaming computer (i5-2450m, AMD Radeon HD 7670m 2GB, 8GB RAM and 2tb, one for programs and documents, and one for games). My PC is a pretty old one (Core 2 Duo E6700, Geforce GTS 250 2GB, 6GB RAM and 500gb) so it isn't very interesting for me. Only reason I would use this, is so I can use my multiple monitors or my TV. But I can use my laptop for that too..

Wouldn't half a second input lag still be pretty major? With little input lag I usually think of <100ms things.

I think osu! has trained me to be incredibly sensitive to input lag... I'd assume it'd be the same for you. What others consider "acceptable" is "borderline unplayable" in my eyes.
(although this is coming from someone who uses a CRT monitor at a high refresh rate, a PS/2 mechanical keyboard, a 1000Hz optical mouse, and plays at 200+ fps framerates with D3D9.dll frame-buffer overrides, in order to get the lowest latency possible with currently available technology. I might be a bit crazy)

Not really, the only games that really require no input lag are rhythm games and fast-paced shooters. And its actually improved today, I think it was lagging a bit yesterday because I was torrenting a few things at the same time. I went and played a few other games today for a few hours and there was almost no lag at all.

Yeah, if you useless wireless torrenting will take a major chunk out of your bandwith. I get like 26 ping in League of Legends normally, with torrents on more like 350 (which already is creeping close to unplayable, especially for certain characters).

Erm...is there anything more to it than running steam onto both PC's and logging on with the same accounts? I'm looking through all the options but cannot seem to find anything stream-related (I may have to check how to properly get a linux and a windows pc on the same network, though).

There should be an entire section for it in the settings, you might need to update Steam if it hasn't already. After that, you just need to login with the same account on both PCs and your game list will include all the games installed on your gaming PC, and instead of "Play" it'll have a "Stream" button.

I hear of some people streaming to their tablets using a Windows 8 device. Does a Windows 8 device use an actual Steam client instead of a mobile one? I know my Nexus 7 can't seem to stream through the Steam app.

To me there's no point in this. If I can only stream to other PCs in the same home, then that means I already have those games installed on a PC in that home. So why wouldn't I just walk over to that PC and play it there instead, or copy it to another PC if I want to? It's just gonna cause unneeded input lag.

Oh wow I hadn't realized there was a working (released) GamePad implementation available. Why was this not frontpaged? I'm positive I've read every news item of interest...

It would make fast paced games unplayable. I played Super Mario Galaxy with a capture card and had some input lag, it was enough that I had to take things slowly or risk dying constantly. After that ordeal I wasn't exactly tempted to continue playing it with the capture card...

Windows 8 is Windows. Haven't you heard of Windows before? It's what most gamers use to play their games on.

So, you're telling me Windows 8 tablets and mobile phones don't use a dumbed down mobile version of Windows 8? That's pretty badass. Also, most gamers play using Windows 7 64 bit as of April 2014. http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/

(1) It's more for lower spec'd PCs/HTPCs, instead of having to drag a desktop out to your living room you can just stream the games to whatever PC happens to be out there.

(2) There's little to no input lag, the only reason I had any was because I was torrenting a few things at the time which ate up a bit of the network bandwidth. I streamed Soul Calibur 3 yesterday with PCSX2 to my laptop and I had no lag whatsoever, same with games like Wolfenstein or HAWKEN.

(3) Not if it's Windows RT, there are no Steam clients that run on ARM

omgpwn666, if the tablet is running Windows RT, no you wouldn't be able to use Steam. Otherwise, it'd be fine.
