I have ordered a V4.5.0-10E 3DS XL and will be ordering a Gateway next week (So I can start playing it after my exams are over). My question is this:
As someone who will only be playing offline and will not be accessing eShop (don't see the point in it as I will not be buying any games from there), would it be wise for me to update to the latest firmware (on emuNAND)? I'll need it to play Pokemon X/Y unless there is a way to update to a slightly older firmware.

I think the Gateway fakes the firmware and you can just run Pokemon without emuNAND. From what I know it's basically only useful if you want access to the eShop and stuff.

The eshop does indeed work. I'm reverting the on board nand back and going to overwrite emu now.

I'm confused. Did you manage to get e-shop to work in emuNAND, or did you get the patches for the games, revert stock NAND to 4.5, and the patches worked?

Will M&L Dream Team Bros still be ok to play without the update, offline? Does the update fix any major bugs or anything? Cheers.
Near the end of the game, it freezes if you use a certain attack I think... The patch released was to fix that

Basically he updated his system to 7.2 downloaded what he needed from eshop, then take a dump of the 7.2 NAND and restore his sysnand to 4.5 then inject the 7.2 NAND dump to use as emunand, he hasn't replied back to confirm it all worked but I see no reason why it wouldn't

Warning!!! To people who just skim and make interpretations, this is only possible if you have a NAND USB mod done to the console which requires soldering etc, if you have no idea what that is you have no place updating your system as you will not be able to downgrade afterwards

Updated onboard, updates DL'd for games, worked, flashing to old setup to test.

I may try it later, if we don't hear from b17bomber, or it worked.

i thought he replied saying something worked -
Patches were recognized by the one game I tested that I didn't have before, so that's neat.

unless i'm confused, but still, no reason why it shouldn't work

Be patient the update came today give then time
To be fair the root cause of this is at least several months old and they never said anything about it. It was only a matter of time until something like this would happen, and it's only a matter of time until it will happen to newly released games as well.

yeah, if gateway can't even implement the newer save encryption, how will they be able to make newer games work... :(
still, even if in a few months gateway won't and never will work with any new games, at least we have all the games over the past 3 and a bit years that the 3ds has been out to play :)

I'm happy that I bought Gateway the way it is. Support for all current games is great for me.
Newer games may take time until the encryption is broken. If it will never happen then I will buy another 3DS for retail games if it's worth it. :)

Hmmm, i'm due to receive my GW card in the next week or so, how will this affect me?
From what i have read and understand, i'll still get the full use of my GW card, but i won't be able to go into the settings on the EmuNAND as the 3DS crashes at this point?

is nintendo finally starting his counter-offence on gateway?
it was about time...

And eshop won't work but this is Only if you update emunand, you can leave it on 4.x and use everything as normal....still can't use eshop but that's to be expected

hmm it just occurred to me, people are able to decrypt roms, like, smealum, and i saw bond697 was recently able to decrypt pokemon. (maybe he can do all roms, i'm not sure, but we know they focus on pokemon ;))
maybe, similar to the ps3 scene, the roms can be decrypted, and rebuilt for lower firmwares...
or maybe like sony did with psp, nintendo add something similar to newer syscalls when creating the game that do not exist in lower firmwares...
so even if we were able to decrypt and rebuild it for a lower version, it still might not be enough.

all valid ideas right?
we'll see what happens :)

maybe all nintendo did was updated the settings and eshop etc, using the new tools they had which used the new keys. there might not have even been anything 'anti-gateway' in their actions.
certainly, they will not be pro-gateway, and keep on the same sdk and encryption etc etc :)

just because nintendo make changes that gateway cannot handle (at least at the moment), it does not necessarily mean they are on the offensive :)
