Im at the very last part where I use the red card and then boto gateway mode and now im ready to start playing 3ds back ups!
When I download these 3ds back ups on my computer, they take about an hour or 2 to download. After they download, the file name shows up as PokemonX.rar or whatever. it has ".rar"
So... I thought the 3ds back ups files are supposed to be called ".3ds"? Am I supposed to extract the rar file? Someone please explain.

A .rar file is basically a file compression method (it can also be used to split up a much larger file into smaller bits to download.)

Google .rar and there are a host of programs that's you can use to decompress them.

What Ive noticed after I extracted the ".rar" file with 7-zip was... ok so heres what happened.
1. extracted ".rar" file and brought me to a folder called The.Legend.of.Zelda.Ocarina.of.Time.3D.USA.3DS-CONTRAST
2. I opened that folder and it brought me to a bunch of different files that are named ctr-aqee.r21 ctr-aqee.r22... etc
3. Opened one of those files and brought me to ctr-aqee.3ds
Um, on step 3. It showed me like 30 of those ctr-aqee files. Am I supposed to click on each of those files and copy 30 ".3ds" files that are inside them?

Just extract the one that has .rar on the end. If you got the .3ds file then you already have done it. Zelda is about 533 MBs.

Open all of those r## files together in 7 zip. They are all part of the main 3DS file.

Snailface and MGS1980, you guys have contrasting answers. I just opened all of the ctr.aqee files in 7 zip. Snailface, why did you say just extract the one that has .rar if MGS said to extract all files? im asking because Im just curious because if I only extract one file, I maybe might get a particular glitch in the game where a part of the map wouldn't load due to those files not being loaded in the first place?

If you have files with endings like .rar, .r01, .r02, etc, they are all part of one larger file. Rar files can be used to split larger files up so they can be downloaded easier. However, when you put them all in one folder and they share the same name, you have to vary the file extension. The major ROM dumps that are consolidated into one file folder will do that by using the extensions like above. Tell the program to extract them all.

Edit: It's like how when you split a ROM, you get a file with same name stem but different file extensions (3D0 and 3D1 for example.) Individually, they are only half a program, but together they make a whole ROM.

.rar is a compression format, like .zip. Warez sites like keeping files as rars because 1: they are super compressed and 2: they make it slightly more annoying to flag for AP.

For opening rars I recommend 7zip. http://www.7-zip.org/download.html

This is mostly dead wrong actually.....
1.They tend to either use store (for video) or minimum compression settings for many other forms of content including video games.
2.No. This has nothing to do with it at all. It's actually more of a legacy thing that dates back to the days when IRC filesharing and FTP's were really the only options, I believe. The files were split to parts to prevent one person from tying down a download "slot" from an fserve (or the FTP) for a long time (mind you this is back in the days of dial up...) Files were basically split up to allow easier distribution across multiple people, so a person could get chunk A from one person, and chunk B from another. I believe it's just been kept more or less as "tradition" it has nothing to do with being flagged by anyone.

Recommendation for using 7zip, however, is solid.

Because I do it and it works. The other way obviously works too, but it seems a little bit more to do. No crime in being lazy.

are you saying with flashget download accelerator, I can speed up the download and shorten the 1 or 2 hours that I have to wait? I currently have the program flashget installed. Although I don't know how to have flashget download it rather than the gay browser download it. Am I supposed to copy the file name and paste it to flashget or whatever?

This is like people asking where do babies come from.. where does a scene release come from? They come from FTPs today still just like always, so its still split into multiple rars so multiple people can send the game FTP to FTP at once, with an sfv file confirming to the FTP how complete a release is and then report it to the FTP's IRC channel. It's still the best way to distribute for the groups.

Then someone packs up that folder and puts it in a 7z to distribute. Although i don't see the point in using 7z for that second stage of distribution myself. Might as well just .zip. It's like not its massively complex anyway.

Considering the fact that scene FTPs are so unknown people are to the point where they think its a long lost legacy/tradition seems like they are nicely hidden actually and the groups are safe to release whatever they like :)

OK, basically its nested archives (one within another).
Sometimes an archive (rar, zip) will be one file, sometimes the one archive is split into many files (file.rar, file.r01, file.r02 etc).
To extract a multi part archive you need all the parts in the same directory.

So to get the .3ds, using your example filename

  • Extract PokemonX.rar using winrar/7zip
  • Browse to the directory you extracted to, you'll see all the ctr-aqee.r01, ctr-aqee.r02 etc files
  • Double click the .rar (can normally click any of them)
  • Extract the contents of that multi-part archive
  • Browse to where you extracted, the .3ds should be in there (or perhaps yet another layer of archiving, just for fun) :)

Unless winrar/7-zip gives an error that extraction failed, the ROM should be fine (assuming it was good when it was originally put into the rar archive).

all the file is the same file split in to many peaces and any modern program will handle them as such. just open one of the files and exact the file and it will go though all the files and extract a single complete file for you to work with.

You can still play locally. The ROM that I used for to compile one of the community Pokemon saves is a Japanese ROM and it trades locally with my US games without problems.
