It's important that your harddisk is using the fat32 file system, preferable with a 32KB cluster size. (Best compatibility)
Some harddisks require more power from the usb ports than the wii can deliver. Sometimes they deliver an Y cable with it to get the power from 2 usb ports instead of just one. One usb plug of such cable is power and signal, the other power only.
So, it might help if you could post what harddrive you are trying to use and how it's partitionned.

Is that a harddisk with a separate power adapter or one that gets it's power from usb?

If it's a harddisk with usb 3.0 compatibility, you should know that those usually don't work very well with the wii.

I had the best results with a generic harddisk enclosure and a generic laptop drive installed in it.
The enclosure is cheap (like 16 euro), and if things don't work as expected, most shops will have no problem if you return the harddisk.

I started with some Western Digital passport drives. Those were cheap, but never worked properly.

Modern usb loaders support fat32 partitions. It's easier to add and remove games from a fat32 partition as it's natively supported by most operating systems.
It's important to have the latest cios installed, as those might improve compatibility as well.
I usually followed the modmii guide to install all latest stuff. You can find it in the hacking section.
Most game backups are wbfs files. Make sure you understand the difference between such a file and a wbfs partition on your harddisk.
The second really isn't needed anymore.

I use a compatible external usb hard drive formatted using FAT32 (program used to partition and format is EaseUS Partition Manager free version) thereafter I create a folder on that hard drive and name it wbfs, putting all games in their own folder named correctly in the wbfs folder all configured according to Softmod ANY Wii created by mauifrog on Wiihacks.com via here

as to your question about why only one game works correctly on the wbfs file system and more then one do not,I have no clue and choose to use what works for me.

I hope I have been a help.
