Hacking PS3 Overheating Problem

I have an original CHCHA01 60GB launch model purchased around 2006 chrismas running 3.55 Kmeaw CFW since 2010. It has always ran hot but as of late, I have been noticing the screen would go blue and sound away for 1 or two seconds at random while playing backups off my Internal HDD. The screen is blue when the HDMI signal is lost on my TV which coincides with the sound going away. If I had a physical disk in, it could be compared to the game disk having scratches on it from the random freezing nature. I checked the cables and they were correctly connected. The problem is either overheating or my HDD is starting to die. I only get slow frames at times with Fifa and the HDMI disconnecting with NFS type games, both which run at 1080. GTA5 runs full speed at 720 though. I know the issue is probably more towards overheating since it is worst during summer and my dog closed the shelf where I had it the other day and the Ps3 frames nearly came to a stop.

Is there homebrew to scan HDD for 3.55 to see if the disk is failing? Removing it just to check is not an option. I nearly stripped the cheap screws when I replaced the 60GB drive with a 600 GB.

Also, how should I proceed about the overheating. I thought about opening it to clean and apply new paste myself before it gets yellow striped or taking it to a computer shop and have them clean and insulate it. Although the system might break from either of those. If anyone has experience with this, any advice is welcome.

Bottomline, I want to keep my system working for a few more years and try to deal with the performance issues.

For original PS3, did you replace the power supply? Very early batch PS3 uses a very hot power supply that you should replace by yourselves.

However, it sounds like GPU is started to fail. If overheat caused a component to fail, there is nothing you can do about it.

Also, there is no reason to stay at 3.55 anymore. You should be on either Rebug 4.46 or Rogero 4.50.

I dont want to lose my PS3 backups since I gifted away some of my disks since so haven't tried to update past 3.55. I might look into it but scared to brick it. The system has never been opened (past the HDD bay) and it is the launch model so it probably has the power supply you are refering to. The problem happens few times some days after I have played for at least 4 hours so the damage might not be permanent, Ive since placed it vertical on top of a table to allow for better airflow. It is still a hair blower past three hours of play. I heard the issue was that the paste dried. I will look into the PSU replacing although I might not do it myself. Last time I changed the PSU on a P4, it never turned back on. I have had the freezing like twice last summer and the recent HDMI disconnect only last Tuesday. Played Wednesday NFS shift on a different TV (1080 n 60 inches) and I was unable to reproduced the problem. May be the port on my TV going bad. Ill use a different port next time I go home and see if it comes back.

Any thoughts on adding fresh paste? I read that is how people solved overheating and the yellow LED in the past. I take it those market fans you stick on the back will not help much with this.

That's how people prevented to overheat and YLOD, not solving it. If your PS3 starts to YLOD then replacing paste ain't going to make it go away.

To open PS3 you need a Torx T8 security screwdriver. Get the screwdriver, then watch YouTube on how people open up their PS3.

Do you know which PSU model is recommended for my system. It take it, my ps3 uses a lot more power than the slim ones. I have not had the yellow light yet, my system doesnt have heavy use and I keep it covered as best as I can to keep dust out of it.
