Off topicish but I didnt want to make a new thread..

Gateway saves.. Are they stored on the 3DS big SD Card or are they stored on the microSD?

I want to format and put a new game on the same microSD will I need to backup the save?
You don't have to backup the save, it's stored on the 3DS' big SD card.

Is it known if the R4i Gold (or other clones) can/will be able to connect to the eshop?
I really want to support the Gateway and hopefully multicart options to be available soon, but the cost of a clone is really tempting. Money is tight, especially around the holiday season. :-/

As of now they won't connect to the eshop who knows in the future, gateway 2.0 will have emunand and will support it but no one knows if the clones will be able to port the firmware.

That was my concern with ordering one. I'm happy to wait until the 2.0 is released and we see if multi cart is supported.

...on that note, what are the chances that multi cart functionality will require a completely new gateway card? For example, Gateway releases 2.0 with the features they discussed, and then say that you need to buy "Gateway ver.2" in order to have multiple roms on a single sd card?

I guess it's doubtful, but i'm not a coder, so I wasn't sure if there was a chance for this to occur. I didn't get onto the DS scene until flash cards were already deep in production, and it seemed like there was no "non multi rom" card available.
Thoughts?

Hey buddies, is there any chance Gateway can detect their own cart..? These clones makes me worry that they will drop their support on their own cart...T_T
And I just bought myself a Gateway 3DS just 3 days ago...T_T

To be honest, any questions that peer into the future will net you the same answer: we really don't know. In this case, I'm not even sure that the Gateway team knows.

This is highly unlikely, but again, we don't know for sure. However, I do think it'd be ridiculous for Gateway to stop supporting their own cart just because there are clones in the market. Could you imagine how different the DS flashcart scene would be if every team stopped supporting their own flashcarts just because a clone hit the market? Wouldn't make much sense.

thanks for the reassurance, buddy...:)
And I am deeply excited about the possibilities of Gateway... I just wish there isn't any clones...

I would've agreed with you before, but I'm starting to see the benefit in having clones. They encourage innovation from each team and also encourage willingness to set themselves apart. If each team were doing this in an attempt to stand out in a sea of clones, then the consumer (i.e. you and me) ultimately wins because there would be more features and more variety of carts to choose from. Gateway no longer has a monopoly on the 3DS flashcart scene. Let's see what they come up with in an attempt to set themselves apart!

hehehe...:D
the more competition there are, the better we consumers are...:)

Whats stopping you from going online in these games exactly when using these cards?

You cant get on eshop because that needs lastest FW but you can still connect to say.. leaderboards and other online features in games right?

Apparently, Nintendo servers are blocking online access to ROMs, at least that's what the error code description says. You still have access to the spotpass features of the games you play via GW/Clones, but if it doesn't qualify as spotpass, then it won't work.

For example: In Fire Emblem you are able to download maps, characters, etc; for the Bonus Box, because it utilizes Spotpass.

I believe there's a similar feature in Monster Hunter, where you can download free stuff, but since it's not via spotpass, it will give you that error code.

this is absolutely true. but if it turns out that they are 1:1 clones then it isn't really a concurrention in knowledge, they basicly just copy gateways work and knowledge. So gateway still has a monopoly in a way "we can do whatever we do, because the new teams can't invent anything new". In this point of view there is no pressure from the other teams except the price, and if gateway make a anti-clone protection in their new update they even rule that out.

That's a pretty big "if." And even if they are 1:1 clones, who's to say the clone teams won't just use Gateway's firmware as a starting point to branch out and do their own thing? Look at Acekard. Their card started out as a clone and they turned out to be a pretty reputable and credible team (in my opinion). We don't know what way these clone teams will go, to be honest. But in most cases, imitation spurs innovation.

Luigis Mansion 2 for example. It runs on 4.5 FW. So if you were to try and get online multiplayer on that it should work right?

But people dont connect to any internet connection because then you get prompted to update FW every time you open the system.

The update prompt is almost impossible to avoid unless you maintain the Wireless switch off all the time.

If you are talking about the original game, of course you can play it online on whatever firmware. I play Mario Kart online for example, but only because I have the original cartridge, the ROM version won't work for this.

Well I do keep my wifi on for streetpassing my legit 3DS.. I just turned spotpass updates off in settings. I shouldnt get any FW prompts right?

If there's a Nintendo Zone on your path and you don't turn the wireless off, the update will download automatically and you'll get the prompt.

Can someone explain a bit more about the gateway and R4i's firmware spoofing/nand emulation? (if those are the same things. If not, sorry, still trying to figure this all out)

Anyway, if you load up the GW/R4 on 4.5 FW, and go to play a 5.0 FW rom you loaded, what happens? Does it just bypass it on the fly, or do you have to do some kind of psuedo system update where you wifi/install an update and the gateway dumps it on the SD card instead of the 3ds itself? If the nand dump option in the upcoming 2.0 fw release just there for safety, or is it to install a REAL system fw update, lets you fiddle around, and then dump the saved 4.5 fw over the newer update?

I've watched demo vids from the GW team, but I just don't understand completely how this works. Sorry if i'm overthinking this, I just want to be clear on my initial interpretation of what's going on. (as incorrect as that may be) :P

The EmuNAND feature hasn't been released.

Firmware spoofing avoids the system to check the console firmware before booting the game, so there's nothing special about this.

Only a few games actually need resources only available in higher firmwares, so these games will return an error while trying to boot them.
