Oh, going by the title I thought Nintendo would follow Sony's lead and do cross play games between Wii U and 3DS..

Pretty much thought the same thing. Then I was disappointed. But then again, Wii U and all so...was to be expected ;O;O;O;O;

God I love Pure Chess. This is the killer app the Wii U has always needed. it physically hurt me to post this

But really though, cross-play between a Nintendo console and a phone is an interesting concept.

As far as I know, MS has been the reason why this hasn't happened before on the PS3 and 360. Something to do with the licensing agreements for the 360 requiring online to use MS's own servers.

Now as Nintendo seems to be adding cross-play into the games and consoles, will this mean titles from Nintendo's first party devs will appear on other devices too? Or will this only be a third party thing?

I highly highly doubt it. But this is a good thing yeah, it would at least make the WiiU online community a bit more active for multiplats. And it's nice to be able to play multiplayer with friends who have a different console.

I know it's a lot more complicated to do than with a simple chess game but had they done this earlier and I had been able to use my Wii been able to play things like Black Ops and MW3 against people with other hardware, my online experience would have sucked a lot less (although I'm sure it would have sucked for everyone ELSE, too, to let Wii JOIN the party ... for several reasons)

i'm amazed sony agreed to this.

Err...why? It's not like any particular company benefits or loses from this. Only reason it hasn't been done much before is because Microsoft is a bitch when it comes to licensing and Nintendo's "Online" was straight shit. Now that they're at least making a better attempt at an online service, stuff like this is possible.

Why wouldn't they? If I recall, FFXIV and Portal 2 are two good examples of them supporting something like this. Microsoft is the biggest suprise here however. They refused FFXIV due to cross play.
Edit: Microsoft also refused Steam integrations for Portal 2.
