Eh...
We already got the ability to execute homebrew from ODDE's and the ability to downgrade phatties + Slims made before 2011 ish.
Don't think there will be progress made tho.
But you'll never know.

Nvm, I really thought this was the PS3 section.

I very much doubt Nintendo have hardened the 3ds completely against hardware level attacks. Whether someone will bother to work one up will probably depend upon how easy the software/SD/flash cart style mods end up being, note this is not necessarily the same thing as good though (plenty of mods could have been made that little bit better by use of a bit of hardware).

Wouldn't the nand encryption need to be broken for a hardware downgrade to be possible?

At the moment you can downgrade to a previous version as long as you have:

A dump of that version
It's from your console

So there doesn't seem to be hardware protection (efuses etc), just the fact the nand is encrypted with a per console key.

So to downgrade without them, you would need an unencrypted dump & your key to encrypt with. I don't even think a decrypted copy of firmware exists & there is no way for the 3ds to spit out it's key yet (if ever).

Speaking of hardware, what happened to the 3ds decapping fund? Yamagushi, any idea?
It's not my project. You could I donno, ballparkin here, email the guy and ask? But no, its sooo much easier for you just to sit around and complain.

I was wondering. If the common key hasn't been found yet, then how come we have infos on the 3DS filesystem?

It's already possible to downgrade as the NAND is compatible with an MMC interface. One catch though - you need a backup of the older firmware from your own system. The NAND contains system-specific infomation and without it matching your system, the 3DS will not boot.

At the risk of going off-topic, I believe a GBATemper paid the final bit to cover the cost of the tax but the fundraiser's site has yet to be updated and we've never gotten any more info ever since. :(

Someone claimed to pay the final amount, but there is no solid verification that they did. As for the topic, people who didn't donate insisted on making a fuss over and over until the topic was locked.
