Hey guys! I just gratuated and seems like my family is going to give me a console as a gift and they're letting me choose between a PS3 (which I'd buy hacked) or a Wii U.

So my question is what do you guys think is the best choice?

I really don't care for online gaming, it's of minimal importance to me seeing as I'm much more of a single player and local multiplayer kind of gamer.

I'm kind of thorn seeing as PS3 already has a nice set library of games and Wii U is just starting but it's showing some neat promise too. I dunno, would like opinions.

Oh yes! I'm also not attached to graphic power. It's not that I don't like when games look as good as Last of US, for example. It's just that I think graphics come waaaaay down on a list of what makes a good game good.

PS: PLEASE refrain from fanboyism, I don't really if Sony or Nintendo is your life. I'm a gamer, I want to play nice games, that's all.

EDIT: Addin' this extra info on the first post too so it's easier for newcomers

Hmmmm, most of the opinions have been great so far guys! Keep 'em coming!

Also, some things I think I should add!

I already have a hacked Wii, and I wouldn't hack a Wii U to play wii games since that would be semi-pointless. I have also played most ps1 and ps2 games I like so that's not a plus on a PS3 with CFW for me, it would be just for PS3 games.

Ps3 games cost like $120 where I live, even older games, so it's not the best option for me to buy originals (it's not like I couldn't buy some, but probably something like one a month would be my safest bet)

Also, my favorite game genre (by far) is RPG, but I'm also a big fan of Action/Adventure games (Metroid, GoW, Zelda, Darksiders, Uncharted, Tomb Raider)

Well if ur going to get a ps3 u will have to buy it used because any new ps3 u will find can not be hacked and u will have to be on firmware 3.55 to run custom fw for backups

Well the PS3 is probably a safe bet, as long as you get a model that can be hacked.

On the other hand, the Wii U is more of a gamble right now. BUT, you can hack the Wii mode and/or play any Wii games you missed. The Wii has a good library both for retail & the Wii Shop, so you can be occupied until the Wii U picks up. (This next line will hopefully be all the fanboyism I present in this post) And the Wii U has the marvel known as EarthBound on Virtual Console!

(Trying not to say too much or really bad fanboyism will kick in)

All in all, just consider the exclusives you want. Do you want Mario, Zelda, etc.? Or does the Last of Us, Rachet & Clank, Persona etc. appeal more to you?

Right now, your best bet is the PS3 since it actually has games worth playing. Plus, since the new generation of consoles is coming out the PS3 is going to be cheaper.
I personally wouldn't recommend going the hacked route because games are cheap on eBay. If you buy a game, play it, then sell it back you'll only be spending a couple bucks. If you want a PS3 with 3.55 or lower, its going to cost a lot. If you want an ODE chip, you have to open the console and spend $100+.

In a sense I own all the systems you are considering, I have a hacked PS3 one of the launch full BC units. I have probably played more PS1 games and PS2 games on it than anything. Not that there are not great PS3 games out there. They just are fewer than the PS1 and PS2 had in there times.

I also own a hacked Wii and a Wii-U although I haven't bothered to hack my Wii-U, playing Wii games and Wii-U is a lot of fun as you know what kinds of games you are in for. I prefer my Wii over my PS3 simply because the PS3 seems to be focused on FPS games. I own a PC and prefer FPS games on that platform, so that left me with less choices on that platform.

The best question to answer your original post is what types of games do you enjoy the most? If you do like FPS games the choice is obvious get a PS3. If you like more puzzle games, adventure and arcade or classic type games get a Wii-U and use Wii mode to it's fullest for the time being.

Before some one bites my head off, I am not saying the PS3 is crap, or that it has no arcade games or puzzle games, I am saying the Wii and by extension the Wii-U has more of them though. In the same breath I am not saying the Wii has no FPS games, (I really do like Metroid Prime Trilogy and The Conduit and ironically I liked Red Steel 1 better than part 2...)

I would say if you can locate a PS3 under 3.55 I would definitely do it. I love my CFW PS3 but I currently play my WiiU ore due to the games. Most games I found on the PS3 is a one time thing and then I never go back to it and no one wants to play with me but with the WiiU I have plenty of friends that don't mind playing Super Mario Bros or NintendoLand with me. (I'm currently in college so that does make a difference)

For the next 2 years the better system will be probably PS3, the next 3 years I think WiiU.

The only advantage the WiiU has now is the that of being a current gen system. But its off to a very slow start. You're basically betting on the strength of Nintendo as a publisher -- and that's a good bet -- but you'll have to be patient for the games to come.

I own over fifty physical PS3 games. Only four of those games are FPS.

Just get a PS+ account.

Just buy a good gpu for your pc. It will be already "hacked", all games are on a torrent site near you. And you will be able to play next-gen games too... Why buy an old console?

The PS3 exclusives suck. There is nothing you will miss on a PC. Anything worth playing is multiplatform. Don't let Sony's PR (ahem "professional reviews") misguide you. They are overrated crap that get hyped because they are exclusives...

Also, there is absolutely no need to bet on a Wii U right now, since you already own a Wii. There is nothing on the U that is worth playing right now, and the future is a big uknown. Chances are if and when new quality games ship, Wii U will be cheaper to buy...

Well, if you don't care about graphics and you're looking for library of games, I'd say the Wii U is a little more future-proof since they'll probably stop making new games for PS3 when the PS4 comes out in a couple months

There's lots of games you can get for either PS3 or Wii (playable on Wii U) so I'd look into what types of games are available and see what you like.

It's also good you don't like online gameplay because either way, Wii/Wii U has limited (compared to a NON-hacked PS3), although existent online options (even when hacked) BUT you can't really play a hacked PS3 online.

edit: okay, ninja'd by your comment about already having a hacked Wii. I'd still say check out the available library but take into account that PS3 will stop new game production soon. Also, people complain that the Wii U has no games now because many of the first games were also on the PS3 ... BUT since you don't have a PS3 at least some of those games would also be available to you still on Wii U. It could go either way.

it seems you have already decided on what you want, with ps3 you can play ps3, ps2, ps1, with wii u you can only play wii games and have to pay for wii u games which im presuming would be very expensive in your country.

just one warning with ps3 and cfw don't use your current psn id on the console, make a new one for cfw and stay offline, there is a high risk of ban on psn.

agreed, pc is another option you can use, you can't get banned on pc (unless you use steam that is) and the graphics are better than ps3 too plus the mods and trainers are a lot of fun too.

I think some of the PS3 exclusives are pretty nice, tho... '-'

Ni no Kuni is so beautiful... Also I prefer to play most games using a joystick over a keyboard + mouse setup.
