I have not touched my Wii for at least 3 years and I wanna get back to it now that I have a little CRT laying around. Specifically, I want to use it for emulation. And as I said, It's been a long time and I don't remember anything. All that I know is that when I enter to the Homebrew Channel it says:

IOS61 v21.29

I want to update it to the latest version. How do I do this? Can I do it via USB since I don't have a SD card right now?

The easiest way to update your HBC is to connect your Wii to the internet, then launch the HBC, you will be prompted to update the HBC. What ever you do, don't update your Wii, hopefully you have priiloader installed and are blocking online updates. I'm really not sure if HBC 1.0.6 is usb compatible, but I know that newer versions are usb compatible.

The easiest way to update your HBC is to connect your Wii to the internet, then launch the HBC, you will be prompted to update the HBC. What ever you do, don't update your Wii, hopefully you have priiloader installed and are blocking online updates. I'm really not sure if HBC 1.0.6 is usb compatible, but I know that newer versions are usb compatible.

Assuming he hacked his Wii correctly (most likely Modmii), that's terrible advice. A virgin or correctly-hacked Wii should always update first.

After that, re-install the HBC. The goal is for it to say IOS58 instead of IOS61.

Finally, grab the Homebrew Browser app. From there, you can download Mednafen, Genesis Plus GX, or whatever suits your fancy.

EDIT: Bootmii as boot2 was once essential, but for just running normal homebrew like emulators, it's utterly useless, bordering on annoying. Bootmii as IOS, however, is recommended.

I forgot about that IOS58 crap, and update the shop channel, it's been so long since I installed that stuff. But, bootmii as boot2 is the preference, since you can restore your NAND if you brick. If bootmii can be installed as boot2 then the op should look for an SD card and make a NAND backup. I disagree with updating your Wii before hacking, maybe noobs can do that, but my Wii is still at sm 3.2, my preference is not for everybody.

Just grab modmii, it's a app to run on your computer, you just answer the questions and it will donwload what ever you need and give you a specific set of directions for your application.

You should be safe unless you did some hardcore hacking like region-changing or downgrading. If you didn't do any of those, go ahead and update over Wi-Fi.

Nope.

1) Update Wii over Wi-Fi
2a) If HBC still installed, do HBC update over Wi-Fi
2b) If HBC gone, use an exploit like Letterbomb or Smash Stack to launch HBC installer
3) Install Bootmii as IOS

With USB, it's not possible. All exploits require an SD Card, and every game exploit requires a standard SD Card (not SDHC; i.e. 2GB or smaller). Sorry about that.

How is it annoying, or useless? If the wii ever gets fucked up beyond repair, bootmii as boot2 would be the easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to save it. It acts as a safegaurd, who wouldn't want that? I don't see how it is annoying at all, unless you are talking about it coming up when you turn on your wii. If that's what you are talking about, then you can just edit the config file on the sd to set it to skip past the bootmii menu, or just remove the files from the SD card altogether.

You can still install IOS58 and install the latest hbc if you want to play emulators. No need to update your Wii system menu, just deny a system update if you see one.

1. You can get the IOS58 installer from wiibrew - http://wiibrew.org/wiki/IOS58_Installer.
2. run the installer from your hbc (don't update hbc yet), this will install IOS58, you will need your wii connected to the internet.
3. yes, you can use your usb device, when you connect your usb device, while in the homebrew channel you need to press the "1" button on the wii remote to get to the usb device.
4. Now, with your Wii still connected to the internet, launch hbc and update the hbc (not your Wii) when prompted to.

now you are set to run emulators that require IOS58, from the hbc

He would have updated hbc which would have persisted through sm4.3, then could download the hackmii installer and ran it off of usb (his phone, if it can go into mass storage mode, not mtp) reinstall hbc so it uses ios58 instead of 61.

Now he needs to buy something.

Tell me where my logic is wrong?

Edit - this is discounting the fact that nobody decided to tell him what to put into modmii, which would have avoided the issue altogether.

IOS58 needs to be installed before hbc or else the hbc will not be running from IOS58. I edited my last post to remove the hackmii installer. No need to buy anything, hbc has had usb support since 1.0.2

what did you update, the hbc or the system menu?

nvm, Yes he needs to update the hbc, because he needs hbc 1.0.8 or higher to run apps that require IOS58. Any system menu will do as longas he has IOS58 and hbc 1.0.8 or higher is installed.
