I'm asking because I'm finally making the leap and i'm going to get a supercard dstwo, and the reason why was because of the "clean" mode I saw. If I understood it right, it meant I don't have to patch my dumps. I was on the gcw kickstarter, so I'm not going to need the emulators on it, and although that thing's battery isn't as good as my ds lite, it's not a huge "deal breaker". I was thinking about getting the r4i or similar but I don't know about patching them. If I had misunderstood I'll probably get one of those and put wood on it(since it seems to be a good firmware to use).

To summarize how safe are those sites? I really really am insanely crazy about sending money to someone especially with my credit card, and I have only ever dealt with a chinese seller once before(for a dress for my mother since she's plus sized and couldn't find anything on normal retailers for her size that didn't make her look like she was an old woman). So I do have very very little experience with them, I know they're a sponsor on gbatemp, and thus they have that kind of reputation already... but the 'verisign' thing is just a static image(I know mcafee and others are useless anyway). Also the site isn't accessible over SSL... is that normal? Especially when they're claiming to have "verisign"... anyway yeah. I feel insanely worried about dealing with a company that doesn't even use SSL for protecting my information and even though I'm on a hardwired line, I still have never/will never do a transaction that isn't over SSL. Are there any other sellers out there that actually have SSL that are trustworthy?

Bribing costello is enough to be a GBAtemp sponsor, i wouldn't buy anything from this site; if they have a verisign certificate they should have SSL open as it's required.
Check shoptemp for good shops :P

None of the shops on shoptemp support SSL. None of them, at all, ever. Which makes _zero_ sense to me. Since you can literally get a _free_ valid SSL cert from startcom. Free, that's right, _free_.

Free valid ssl from startcom is not for commercial usage. As long the payment(mostly another company who handles the payements) form uses SSL you can trust it a little, as long you choose a shop with some good reviews on shoptemp almost nothing can go wrong!

I don't see where you got that it's for non commercial use. The site says nothing about not being valid for commercial use. I was unable to find anything about that at all. And when I was talking with them awhile ago about using the cert for a site(free one), they never said anything about it at all. If it was for non-commercial use then it should say so on the page or somewhere in the documents. All it is is literally the most basic cert out there. I guess... but I am super woried about it. I'll try it then a month or so then, once I have some extra cash.

the nds-cards one, seemed to have really good reviews. Prices were about the cheapest(since some charge 10$ shipping), so I think I'll go with them.

Edit: I do see that it is for personal use now. I guess I'm dumb... So with that out of the way. Would the r4i with wood be a good/safe bet to use? I was really leaning on the supercard ds2 but the cost is a bit high. The r4i cards look cheap and even one that supposedly works with wood is also really cheap.

If it's listed there and meets the requirements you want in the charts, go for it. If it's not listed there, we don't recommend it.
This is going to sound crazy, but I've looked at that chart probably a billion times. I'm still debating on whether or not I should get a supercard or not. Admittedly the special homebrew is nice but honestly I won't really need it, I was going to but then prices started going up, and the r4i looks interesting. I'm probably going to end up waiting till I have extra cash and see if the r4i "gold" price doesn't go up that much, if it's still a decent amount cheaper than the ds2 then I'll go with it. I'm just very indecisive I guess.

Prices on flash carts don't go up the way other electronics do when still in production, the DSTwo's base price is still $35 in most shops, and if you find shops willing to ship without the packaging (like zhuzhuchina.com) you can even get the R4i Gold for $10.50.

Do note that one of the DSTwo's main abilities is to bypass DSi/3DS updates without needing to make a new model, which is something I need to add to the chart as it stands out, unfortunately.

So the r4i gold isn't able to do that? if so then, fuck, I'm getting a supercard ds2. I have a dsi and use it most of the time since I still have yet to complete some of my dsiware stuff I got when I originally got my dsi. And I'd like to just be able to use it until the end of time(it's never updated unless I get crazy and decide to get dsiware with the credit I have left, I think it's like 5-6$ from teh original promotion). My 3ds is only updated when it catches me off guard, I'm not aware of many games that force me to update... but if I do happen to buy one, then yeah I'm getting ds2 then.

Certain flashcart companies had to make a new revision of their flashcart because they couldn't be updated to support the newest firmware for certain reasons.
SuperCard still haven't had to do this, but that's more about luck than anything else. However, they are the fastest at updating their flashcart to support the newest firmware, without doubt. They always have an update within a day.

Some flashcart companies will purposively release new flashcart revisions instead of updating their existing ones just so they can earn more money. r4ids.cn doesn't do this though.
However, if they have to make a new revision of their flashcart to support the latest firmware, chances are SuperCard will have to do the same. You probably won't need to buy enough R4i Gold revisions to outweigh the price of a DSTWO. That said I would still get the DSTWO (and did) just because of all the extra features it has, the quick updates, clean mode and so on.

EVERY flash cart that still works on the DSi/3DS has made new hardware. The ones that didn't want to make new models simply never got updated. :P Referring to the Ak2i and such.

And it's not about luck, it's about design. The DSTwo has the biggest and most complex bootloader system, in fact it's able to read data off the MicroSD even when it's not being run. Other carts do not do this because it's cheaper to do it the old way (which shows in the price difference).

Even carts like r4ids.cn have already had to make multiple hardware models. For example the revision 6 model they sent me for the original review I did stopped being able to update after 4.3, which was nine months and four updates ago.

Yeah the DSTWO has its advantages in that field, but that's still dependant on how Nintendo decides to block it. If they do something similar to when the AK2i was blocked again, it might very well block the DSTWO too.

No, the Ak2i stopped updating because it ran out of internal room for the data (AKAIO team confirmed). The DSTwo can read boot data from the MicroSD, which is why it sometimes doesn't even need to run the updater to bypass a new update.

The DSTwo has a technical, decided, and proven advantage over every other flash cart when it comes to updates.

I meant something similar as in a hardware issue that can't be overcome with a simple update. The DSTWO definitely has an advantage but that doesn't mean it can't be blocked.

Pattern recognition states that the cart using better technology that never had to update by far has the best chances to survive versus all the other carts that keep getting blocked. :P

Also something else I was wondering what sort of read speed does the ds cards have by default? All I've ever gotten was "128MB++ is 25% slower than 64MB and below". That tells me nothing, what sort of sd card speed is minimum to keep loading times at as low, or lower than the original games?(I hate loading times with a passion)

Generally "not a shit card", like Class 4 or Class 6.

ah ok, well that's good to hear. I got a 32gb class 4 sandisk awhile ago(still cheap), and the avg read is ~10MB/s with random at ~7.5MB/s. I'll get another one then, I was just kinda worried that the dstwo would hamper the speed of the card itself since I don't know the bus speed that the ds card has. I've rambled enough now, I'll stop posting to this thread since I've made up my mind then. A supercard ds2, and a 32gb microsd card(since it's soo cheap)

Edit: Also, the dstwo, if ou have a dslite, is it able to utilize/trick the ds into using its onboard processor to play teh GBA games? Or is it _only_ emulation? I saw that they had slot 2 cards but I can't seem to find any online(haven't looked at ebay yet).

It'd be awesome if they were able to do that, since even though the gcw I got will have emulation, emulation is never 100%.

Edit 2: I also have the "ds browser" memory card expansion thingy already. I doubt anything would honestly use the thing. But anyway, yeah, if the dstwo can utilize the onboard gba functionality of the ds that'd be really awesome but I doubt that there's any that can do it.
