Timesplitters has become sort of a cult classic. It was developed by Free Radical Design, ex-employees of Rare, who made some of the more famous couch FPS games like Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark. After Free Radical died and was absorbed into Crytek, the franchise seemed lost in time. After a 75,000 strong fan petition failed to rustle the jimmies of Crytek to revive the franchise, they did the next best thing: gave a group of 25 fans the go-ahead to resurrect the series. And resurrect they will, with Timesplitters Rewind.
The project aims to remake Timesplitters' classic multiplayer, but now in the fancy new CryEngine 3. The team was given the okay to use Timesplitters assets, but they chose CryEngine 3 for "a more modern look." Project manager Michael Hubicka still reassures fans that "It will still feel like a TimeSplitters game."
There's no intention of remaking the single player or co-op, just the versus multiplayer and Challenge Mode. You'll be able to play online, over LAN, or solo with 8-16 players, including bots. It'll include all the original game types plus new modes.
A demo is planned for December, and the entire game will be 100% free, with free new content coming as well. The team is currently doing this with their free time, so donations are of course appreciated.
So, it doesn't seem like it's time to split for this franchise.
