http://shanghaiist.com/2013/02/11/review_of_pizza_huts_shrimp_tempura.php

As Shanghaiist's food editor I've eaten my share of WTF eats from fermented fish to yak penis. None did I dread trying more than the Pizza Hut special, a pie with shrimp tempura, steamed shrimp, squid rings, fish cakes, pineapple, wasabi mayonnaise, and a hot dog-stuffed crust (73RMB), now available at all China outlets!

Serious? People in Shanghai actually order and eat this crap?

Best food review quote EVER:

After failing to finish the "asspie," I unquit smoking just to get the taste out of my mouth.

Is it just me and my sick mind or does this pizza look perverted?
I'm sure it tastes wonderful though. I'd order it if I could (no homo)
The ingredients list is a sure success, and wasabi mayo is great.

I hardly call Pizza Hut pizza (probably why cretins call them pies but that is a different matter for a different day) and you can keep your "stuffed crust" but "shrimp tempura, steamed shrimp, squid rings, fish cakes, pineapple, wasabi mayonnaise" sounds a bit over the top (though I am probably thinking of fish cakes in the double burger size things I usually eat them as) but nothing especially disagreeable, especially for a place that does a fair line in seafood.

Indeed other than my dislike of wasabi and lack of a fondness for a lot of shrimp/prawn dishes I can safely say I would probably order it and would certainly not cast a questioning eye over a friend that did.

Sooo... it's Cheesy Bites, except with sausage... and the toppings are seafood?

That doesn't sound disgusting at all - quite the opposite. The tempura looks very appetizing too.

Meh doesn't look too bad to me. Just seems like a normal pizza with all the addons. Frank bits are nothing new. Tempura prawns are nothing new.

And that would explain the price since price of pizza is usually around 1/3 to 1/2 of what this dude paid.

I'd rather eat that ANYday over this chain trash over here....have you SEEN what places like Little Skeezers and Dominos have been churning-out as of late? (shudder)

Wifey came home with two of the 'pies' from Dominos the other night for her and her friends, they all talked about how repulsive/chimpy the 'quality' has become...they looked like cardboard cut-outs, and smelled like frozen product, shame...

I ran a Pizza Hut for many years, and what REALLY troubles me is that for many Americans, especially younger folks, this chain-store pseudo-pizza is all they will ever KNOW of 'pizza' - its very normal for them to grab the phone and call-out for 'Domino', Papa John', etc....they live their lives unAWARE of REAL pizza!!
:(
(We can't ALL have been raised in the NY area, but c'mon; surely most folks have a TRUE pizzeria close enough to make it worth their while, eh?)

The last pizza I ate was actually topped with shrimps, tuna and clams... I don't see the problem with this pizza at all. Sure, I'm not a huge fan of squid rings, but I mean... It's nothing special about it? And by special I mean, disgusting.

If he's eaten yak penis? And fermented fish? Now that's what I call disgusting. (Fermented fish is even a traditional dish here in Sweden).

I love fishy things/sea proteins on my pizza/pasta, in most cases. As for the fermented stuff, I love a good anchovy paste, and I have become addicted to this 'Caviar with a K' from Norway...AWESOME orange-coloured fish guts in a tube...mmmmmmmm...

Emigre - Sucks, man...enjoy those chain places, eh? ;)
(Before you die, get a slice from Rays or at least from some nice mom-and-pops place in NYC...you owe it to yourself, everyone does.)

Homemade > whatever.

Just made that last night. The left one has hamburger under the cheese (makes it so much better) and pepperoni on top. The right one would normally be loaded, but it's just cheese since that's all the new roommate's kids eat when they visit.

I don't B-)

Are you in zone Q or something? When wandering around London (save perhaps for City of) I am usually spoiled for choice for a proper pizza.

I think that it's Swedish as well ;) Anyway, you can probably find "Kalles Kaviar" at your nearest IKEA, it's supposed to be available there at least.

Harrow. If I want a proper pizza, I'm pretty fucked in terms of choice. If I want to eat out, I'm fucked in terms of choice. So many chicken and chip shops...

I like almost all the ingredients, but not on a pizza.

Pizza Hut, depending on where you are in the USA, can actually be quite good. The Pizza Huts in Indiana/Michigan are fantastic due to the work that the franchise owner put in.

The ones in Texas? Well.... Stay away from the ones in Texas.

W-wait... yak penis ???
:wtf:

Here's your daily dose of culture.

Kaviar (not the same as caviar) is the shit when used with boiled eggs, it's just so much better than plain old salt, people who've come here and tried it with eggs says the same thing once they get used to the taste a bit.

Rectangular pizzas for when you have people over! I made two of them a couple of weeks ago, one with spicy kebab meat and green peperoncini, the other one with surimi sticks and shrimps. Oh and I used the cheese filled crust technique, you blogged about that a while ago iirc.

I would definitely give that Shanghai pizza a go, though I think I'd eat the toppings separately and not combined in one bite.

Yar, wheat crackers are also nice, but hard-cooked eggs RULE as a base for the Kaviar, indeed. Also, those pies sound nice...we make pizza regularly here, variety is the spice of life.

For a nice umami vibe, try some Kaviar on a bit of nice, RIPE melon...trust me.
