I'm not having any luck with Multi Mod Manager or Wad Manager or YAWMM. The latter two give me a ret = -1 error when I select the HDD and in MMM, I don't see an option to open up my HDD. Any advice?

Yet another wad manager is what I use.
like I said before in a previous thread, MMM does NOT support reading wads from HDD.

make sure you select a valid cios to get acces to your wii's system.
normally ios236 would suffice, but seeing you having problems with that, I suggest trying Hermes cios 222 ( base 38 )or d2x cios 250 ( base 57 ).
If you have followed all this and used modmii to get the needed cios, I can only conclude that your drive is not compatible.

Ok, I'll try the 222 cios. I'm using a standard Lacie HDD, do you know if these are known to not be compatible?

There is a new mod version of WiiMod: wiimod Lite.

1. Support vWii (and Wii) AHBPROT
2. Support to install wad from USB device

take a look: http://gbatemp.net/threads/wii-mod.272321/page-24#post-4510030 ;)

I tried this program and it looks like it will detect my HDD, but when it goes to open it, it claims there are no files there. What folder should be in the root directory for it to detect the wads? Currently I believe I have it in 'wad'

I might as well use this thread instead of creating a new one.

So basically, as is it now, there's no way to start and play a WAD game from a WAD file that have been placed on the harddrive, right?

I use MMM and YAWMM, both work with USB, however I just prefer to install through SD.
Where is the option for mounting a HDD?
I do not think MultiModManager support HDD at all.

Yet another wad manager is the only wad manager I know of that supports mounting hdd, BUG FREE.
Also your files can be in any preffered folder using YAWM.
All other managers need the files, a "WAD" folder, without additional layers ( Wich sucks IMO. )

Hangs on usb initiating.Probably because undelying folder structures are not supported.
( USB:/WAD>Folder>.wad files. )
I had the same problem, you need launch it with IOS58, reloading IOS249 seems to lockup the HDD.
The app apparently patch IOS58 on the fly (not sure) to install .wads
It does support folder browsing under IOS58
