I've finished softmodding my Wii, but I don't have an external HDD large enough to support a Wii iso. Is there a guide that teaches me how to do this, or can someone explain how to do so? Thanks.

Burn the ISO to a good-quality DVD such as Verbatim (the Wii is a bit picky) with 4x speed to maximize reliability. Any higher and you may have disc read errors or freezes, but this depends on your burner and media.
Wii ISOs are burned just like normal ISOs, you just have to keep those things in mind.

Does it matter if the dvd is dual or single layer?

yes

well setting the layer break to the value required for the DL games and burning a SL game onto a DL MIGHT work since it then would only use the first layer
but I see no reason why anyone would want to actually do that

For dual layer games, use dual layer discs and set the layer break (I thought the latter wasn't needed anymore but I guess it might be for softmods)
For single layer games, use single layer discs. They would probably work on dual layer discs but that would be a waste of money since DL discs are overpriced.

Also make sure to use DVD-R, not DVD+R.
It has always been said that DVD+R discs wear out the laser faster, but this is bullshit.
DVD-R and DVD+R are physically the same thing.

On a side note, at least 2 of the 3 (?) dual-layer games have mods that remove unnecessary data so that it'll fit on a single-layer disc.

Also be aware that for quite a while now [3 years?] with any new model wiis its impossible to play DVD+R/-R at all. To check if your wii will play DVD+R/-R go to http://www.wiidrives.com/list and enter your wii serial, if it comes up as a GC2-D3-2 chip or above then you wont be playing disc backups at all.

Edit: although theres always a very slim chance its a refurb with an old drive, in which case just burn a game and try. ;)
