hi. i want to sell my softmodded wii and it has version 3.4e. is it possible to update to 4.0-ish without bricking the wii or do i have to erase everything manually and then update the console? i just want to get rid of the console so i don't really care if some remains are left, but just so the next owner can use it and update it without knowing it have been softmodded.

Depends on the mods you used.
on update some go away, some stay, some brick
eg downgrades + wanins (un)save updaters are known to brick
post details

iirc modmii has a revirginizing wizard
maybe check tat out first

Hopefully someone will call me out on it if I'm wrong, but you should just be able to install sm 4.0 and the ios it runs on. Just download the wads for that through ModMii. Un install the hbc if it's still there, but it should be removed in the update. Everything else, yeah there will be remnants (patched ioses, possibly bootmii if you did that) but it won't appear hacked unless someone is looking for hacks (at which point they'll need to hack it anyway...)

grab NUSD_mod and simulate a System Menu 4.0 update; make sure to click pack as wad box and install all the .WAD files that it downloads and then uninstall the HBC from the hackmii installer. Priiloader automatically uninstalls/removes itself when you install a new system menu. If you have bootmii@boot2 I would still keep that just in case regardless if they know or not cause it can be fixed just make a backup of the wii for safty reasons of course.

Also if you want to avoid the removal of bootmii@boot2 avoid installing the boot2.wad

Can I ask why you want 4.0 SM when it's just going to get updated to 4.3 when they try to play online or certain games?

Playing online won't force you to update. If you don't want to update to 4.3, you should choose 4.1, not 4.0.

He just wants to remove the mods if he is to stay on 4.x he needs still have some modified files it's not possible any other way so might as well update & 4.1 is for playing disc specially right?

From my understanding StartPatch can cause your Wii to brick if you had used it to install/enable System Hacks if you use Priiloader then your good but it's still recommended to disable all hacks from both apps. Someone may want to correct me cause I never used StartPatch.

The latest System Menu is 4.3 and can be hacked just as easy as any other 4.x System Menu; I don't believe you will brick as most bricks in my opinion are caused when people install a new System Menu & either installing a STUB IOS or not having the required IOS. I would use ModMii to re-hack your Wii but choose no on all option but choose yes for installing all Active IOS & System Channels. Then uninstall HBC from hackmiiinstaller.

This way in the future if your friend tries to downgrade it won't brick their Wii as ModMii purposely installs a higher version IOS for which System Menus run off to avoid STUBS being installed and/or bricks occurring. After all you just want the Wii to look as if it's not hacked ;)

Time ago I make some "test" with my wii:

I add some hacks using startpatch in "clean" firmware then I install Priiloader:
No problem.

I try also (after install priiloader), to use startpatch:
no one hacks of startpatch can be used.

I try using FW 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3

But I'm not able to tell the "technical" reason. I have only some idea.

not sure what startpatch is...
so what you are saying is i should use modwii to only install "all active ios and system channels?" and after this uninstall homebrew channel from hackmiinstaller? will the wii be okay if i do this?

edit: there is so many options in modwii, which ones should i pick?

Unless you're nintendo (or DeadlyFoez), the only indicator that your wii is softmodded would be the ability to launch bootmii @ boot2, priiloader or if any custom channels\themes (including the HBC) or game-saves (i.e. game based exploits like the twilight hack) are still installed. So you can take any softmodded Wii and just remove those things and your average joe wouldn't be the wiser that it was ever softmodded (unless said person decided to eventually softmod it and discovered any left-over legacy mods). If the wii was region changed someone might also be able to figure that out based on the serial number conflicting with the region of system menu installed.

The only other possible way an average joe could detect a Wii is softmodded is if darkcorp is still installed and they test loading a backup disc. But ModMii will overwrite darkcorp if installed anyways, and most ppl don't actually have it installed anymore but I figured I'd at least still mention it.

Now if you're trying to remove all traces of a softmod so that even nintendo can't detect it was softmodded, that process is riskier and a lot more complicated.

I hope this helps.

Or me, or anyone who knows what they are doing. :P

Yes the Wii will be ok by choosing those 2 options in ModMii; this way the person can still update their Wii via disc channel and not have to worry about anything else; I just soft-modded a E Wii region changed to U & did a disc update and still kept all the mods :) so it's perfectly safe I would say :) worse case senerio is the update will remove all mods anyways (no brick) which is what you want :)

@Joostin,
True, but unline ninty or Foez we would have to use an exploit. But you're right, someone could use an exploit without actually softmodding the Wii to determine whether or not it had already at some point been softmodded, but those clues could also be covered up (to a certain degree) if someone was so inclined to do so.

Well by "Foez" I assume you mean anyone with the ability to dump the NAND.

ok, so maybe its really not necessary for me to uninstall all of those things like ios:es and such. im just fine with erasing only homebrew channel, just so stores like eb games or game doesnt know it has been softmodded.

what i still wonder if i can update from version 3.4e to the latest version without the wii bricking? what will happen if i format the wii from the system menu?

Yes you can but the safest mesause would be to use ModMii as mentioned before it has safety precautions in place & I can't recall anyone bricking their Wii from it.

alright. i havent used modmii before, so bear with me. it tries to guide me through but im not really sure what to pick

this is how it looks when it wants me to accept my settings.

ModMii Wizard

* Install\Update all recommended softmods

* Current System Menu is 3.XE
* Desired System Menu is 4.1E
