Hi, I read a tut somewhere and is it true that the only way to upgrade the flashcart is by using DS Lite, DSi or XL but can't be done with a 3DS?

Well, if there is another way can please tell me?
Thank you

If the flash cart can start, you can update it.

HOWEVER if your DSi or 3DS has already blocked, then you can't update most flash carts since they need to run to update.

The DSTwo can bypass this secondary block sometimes due to it's design (one most carts don't have)... but it's better to just never update your 3DS, period.

I wouldn't say that but I would highly suggest checking change logs before updating to make sure they haven't blocked anything :P

(i) rename the dstwoupdate.dat as dstwoupdateb.dat. Then copy dstwoupdateb.dat to the root of microsd card.
(ii) Inject microsd card into DSTWO, then inject DSTWO into 3DS console. Turn on the console and enter DSTWO, you will see the screen said:
"An error has occurred.Press and hold the Power Button to turn the system off. Please see the Nintendo DSi Operations manual for help troubleshooting"
leave it and wait 5 minutes (it's very important, and must be 5 minutes! Or it's very dangerous for DSTWO!), please dont do anything except waitting

Turn off the console after 5 minutes

then delete dstwoupdateb.dat file from your microsd card. BEFORE YOU REBOOT (very important! You have to delete it!)

once deleted from MicroSD reinsert SD card to DSTwo and power it on and enjoy it working on 4.4.0-10

So it is possible to update the DSTwo without the need of DS Lite, DSi or XL because I didn't have one and I am only planning to buy 3DS XL.

Turn off the console after 5 minutes
then delete dstwoupdateb.dat file from your microsd card. BEFORE YOU REBOOT (very important! You have to delete it!)
meaning after console is off, i remove the microsd card then remove the dstwoupdateb.dat file using computer? Then insert it to 3DS XL again and reopen?

Just asking, what happen to 3DS if it detected a flashcart ( meaning not hack yet )
and dangerous to DSTwo means?

Thank you

If you can run the flash cart, you can update the flash cart. The only problem is when the 3DS/DSi is updated further than the flash cart is updated. Not all shops update their carts before sending them out, so check first.

And yes, delete the file from the MicroSD then put the cart back in the computer.

The 3DS, if it detects the DSTwo, will refuse to run it.

So, 1st all i need to update the DSTwo on 3DS is a more updated 3ds?

If update of DSTwo failed, what is the consequences? on 3DS and DSTwo?

Thank you

I don't understand your first question.

The 3DS is not modified by any flash carts.

If the DSTwo update fails for some reason (usually people shutting it off in the middle of the update), it won't work unless you find a way to re-update it (usually needs a DS/Lite and another flash cart).

Sorry, for the 1st question, never-mind about it.
And in other words, if update fails, then the DSTwo will be blocked by the 3DS and can only be updated in DS/Lite and other flash cart

Then what is bricking?

Thanks

The 3DS is never bricked.

If the update itself fails, then the 3DS is bricked and you need another flash cart and DS/Lite to fix it.

However if the DSTwo is not updated as far as the 3DS, then the 3DS will just refuse to run it.
Ok thx. By the way, for R4i Gold plus, i only need to replace the kernel file to update instead of need DSlite/DS?

And which flashcart is better to use? DSTwo or R4i Gold plus?

Thanks again

The kernel is not the firmware. The kernel deals with game compatibility, while the firmware/bootloader is what deals with DSi/3DS update compatibility.

Some carts bundle the kernel and firmware updates in the same download. However, you still need to run the update in order to update it. Simply dropping files onto a MicroSD is not updating the firmware. Usually (for carts that bundle the downloads) there's an "update" function on the main menu that acts as a shortcut to run the update file.

I would not recommend getting an R4i Gold Plus over a DSTwo.

Ya, I kind of think so too, then DSTwo it is, which website you suggest to buy it? nds-card or ndsicard?

And I need to clarify something, to update the DSTwo directly from 3ds, it must be ver2.0 3DS console right?
Then if update successful, i am able to play 3ds game on 3ds right?

thank triple~

http://www.nds-card.com/ is GBATemp's sponsor, so it's usually suggested to buy from them.

The 3DS just needs to be able to run the DSTwo to safely update it. If the DSTwo is updated at least as far as the 3DS, then it can run and thus be safely updated. This means that even if the 3DS is 4.0, as long as the DSTwo has been updated for at least 4.0 it can be updated.

There is an emergency update method, but it shouldn't be relied on.

OP, I think your signature is too big.

But I could only rely on the emergency method because I will only own a 3DS XL and not planning to buy other handheld console.
