I'm looking for a new torrent client.

  • Why not BT? - It sold out ages ago.

  • Why not uTorrent? - Same thing. Nowadays it "filters" "unwanted" material (i.e. deletes recognized pirated content after it's downloaded).

  • Why not Deluge? - Deluge doesn't understand the concept of "do not download". I downloaded a discography, and I had marked entire folders as "do not download" (as I did not want those albums) when loading up the .torrent file. Even though they were marked, a lot of the data was still downloaded. I'm talking an entire 6 songs out of a 22-disc album were downloaded in their entirety even though they were marked "do not download". This wastes bandwidth, as well as requires me to go manually trim out a lot of crap, including unfinished/corrupt files that it started downloading and then stopped before they were done. This is obviously incorrect behavior but the client has

  • Why not (250MB RAM usage Java client)? - I'm looking for a torrent client, not a huge software suite that just happens to do torrents as well.

Advanced features (WebUI, etc.) not required. I just need a torrent client that's up-to-date (can handle DHT and other such modern connection features) and can download what I tell it to (fuck you uTorrent), and not download what I tell it to ignore (tired of waiting for Deluge to fix the issue).

I see no problem with uTorrent.
I download pirated material all the time and it doesn't recognize it...

You could also use Vuze if you don't want uTorrent.

It popped up a message from the program and everything, though I don't remember the wording (it was something generic hinting that it wouldn't download pirated content anymore). In my mind doing that AT ALL is unacceptable (purposely deleting a non-dangerous download when it finishes with no user confirmation), so I immediately uninstalled it and switched to deluge.

I didn't think I was the only one seeing it, since I know uTorrent had been bought out beforehand (and other things like Android are doing this shit now too), so I didn't bother taking a screenshot or anything since I figured it was part of their new shit. I'm way too lazy to search through the changelogs to see which version did it, but if you all aren't seeing it then it was likely removed quickly. I don't think I was using one of the Betas though, I usually go for stable channels.

i mostly stick to old games and obscure underground hiphop. so it's possible that they are manually flagging submissions or have some type of database that isn't associated with stuff i grab.

i'm using utorrent 3.2 build 27886

been using utorrent 1.6.1 or whatever for forever with no issues, I don't ever update it so might be why.

You could try Transmission, but it may need to install some additional stuff in order to run (Qt most likely). I'm also not sure what kind of features it has to be honest, but it works pretty well for just downloading torrents.

Yep, I've run uTorrent 2.2.1 for years now, with zero problems. I believe that was the last version before the buyout. Snag a copy from oldversion.com and untick the 'automatically check for updates' checkbox during setup.

at some point around the v2 releases there was a disk caching issue that was causing larger torrents to have issues. where the parts could not be verified against a .dat. it was during this time that i updated, against my better judgement, to the v3 release. but after tweaking it to the way i want it to look, i no longer hate v3.

I've realised that everytime I download a new version of utorrent it gets worse and worse.
Like, I downloaded utorrent on my netbook a week ago, and it had fucking ad's everywhere, and now the newest version blocks pirated shit?

I think uTorrent is probably better than bittorrent, but it's lagged on me before, so Bittorrent might be the key. But I had never heard of uTorrent recognizing pirated content...

What ads? I update it regularly and I never saw any ads beside uTorrent Plus, and that's easy to hide.
