Last week during a speaking engagement at BAFTA, Hideo Kojima responded to a question regarding the future of Metal Gear Solid games. He was asked if the future of Metal Gear was heading towards an open world concept since each of the games allow players more and more freedom withe each new installment. Kojima responded by saying this:

First of all if you give somebody a mission, and say your mission is to go and rescue this person, already you create some drama there. However if you take that a step further and say give the person the power to decide how they get there, what time they arrive, what kind of path they use to sneak into the base then it creates even more drama and gives them more freedom. So it’s not so much that I’ve been aiming to create an open world game so much as I just want to give players the freedom to do things in a way that feels natural to them.

Up until this point, if you had a hundred people and you made them play a game, they’d all basically arrive at the same time, take the same route, use the same equipment to get the job done. But what I want to do from this point on is give people the freedom, so if you have a hundred people and you give them this mission then they’ll all come back with a hundred different stories.

They may arrive at a different time, use a different route to get into the base, use different weapons and equipment. So rather than having one great, dramatic story you have a hundred. That’s really what I want to accomplish. So it’s not necessarily that I’m aiming for open world, that’s not the [be all and] end all, what I want to do is give people the freedom to create their own stories and create something that’s very personal to them. That’s what I want to accomplish.

I remember years ago when he spoke of an idea using the internet as a codec so you would dial a random number and in turn be in touch with a random player, you could then ask the random person for help/assistance and of course it could be hit or miss, I thought it was a random but good idea. Some of his other ideas are just as wacky...anyone hear how he wanted to paint the disc of Snatcher with a substance that smells like blood so as the disc got warmer, he would guess by the time you found a certain corpse you would get the smell of blood in your room and build a great atmosphere for it. Of course his boss felt the idea a tad too wacky

Your room would smell like you hoard used tampons. NO.

Seeing the stories Kojima can deliver, maybe it's best to leave it in the player's hands.
Hey the MGS games do have pretty good stories.

Some of them do. Others... eh, "not so much" is a bit of an understatement in that regard.

By "some of them" we mean MGS, MGS3, and Peace Walker.

MGS stories range from "odd but great" to "makes no fucking sense". Kojima is like a painter. You can tell when he's been using drugs and painting and when he's had his sad outs of withdrawal in which he expresses his true feelings in great masterworks.
