Set CMOS hard drive setup to Auto-Detect with LBA mode enabled.

MAY REQUIRE FORMATTING AND PARTITIONING SOFTWARE TO ACHIEVE FULL
CAPACITY.

Some systems BIOS have capacity limitations. Types that have
been identified are:

a 2.11GB or 4095 cylinder limitation
a 3.26GB or 6322 cylinder limitation
a 4.22GB or 8192 cylinder limitation
a 8.45GB Standard INT13 limitation (CHS[1024x256x63]x512)
a 33.8GB or 66,060,287 LBAs limitation
a 137.4GB or 268,435,455 LBAs limitation (28-bit limit)

and, if exceeded, may cause the system to hang during boot,
capacity reduction or it can truncate or wrap the cylinders when
auto-detect options set in the CMOS.

New INT13 Extensions and LBA mode in BIOS and FAT32 or NTFS-based
file systems are required to acheive full capacity. FAT32 file
system can create single partitions and logical drives up to 2TB.

FULL-CAPACITY solutions include third-party drive preparation
software, system BIOS update which supports LBA mode or third
party bios driven host adapters.

Default CHS translation:
16,383 cyl, 16 heads, 63 sectors = 8,455,200,780

========================

Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 with
48-bit LBA Address drivers are required for native support of
ATA (IDE) disc drives greater than 137GB.

Windows 98, Windows Millennium and Windows NT 4.x all have 137GB
native limitations supporting ATA (IDE) disc drives. Third-party
device drivers may be available from motherboard or host adapter
manufacturers for these legacy Windows operating systems.

Windows 95 FAT16 based operating systems are also limited to 8.4GB.

DOS 16-bit FAT file system cannot access more than 2.147 Gbytes per
partition.

Already low-level formatted at the factory.

offerings or specifications. (03/16/2003)

...okay, somebody has to say this.

OpenPS2Loader has very limited compatibility as far as loading via USB is concerned. Barely any games work, and if they do, they suffer from lag due to the fact that the PS2 is equipped with low-speed USB. It is *not* the recommended method of loading.

The ladder goes like this:

Internal HDD (Applies to Playstation 2 Classic only) > Network Loading via SMB > USB Loading

Loading from external memory such as an HDD in a USB enclosure should be used as a *last resort*, you will suffer from numerous issues if you choose that path.

I sincerely recommend that you load your games via SMB instead.

I would rather guide you through the SMB setup process than to recommend you something that you will regret buying in the end. Which steps do you have issues with? Describe your preparations.

okay I'm having this problem setting up this. I want to connect my Ethernet wire (from my pc to my ps2) not router

- PS2 -
IP: 192.168.1.104 Change this is to the address for your console on the network
Mask: 255.255.255.0 This is the subnet mask for your network
GW: 192.168.1.1 Change this to the IP for your router (or PC's IP if directly connected with a crossover)
- PC -
IP: 192.168.1.2 Change this to the IP of your PC, it might be a good idea to make it a static IP so it doesnt change on each PC startup if you use other PCs.
Port: 445 This is the default port used by SMB protocol, but you can assign a different one if it is already used by another PC program.
Share: PS2SMB This is the name you use for the folder/drive sharename on your PC. (they MUST match)
A virtual Keyboard will open to allow you to input a sharename.

User: GUEST Change this if your PC requires a username for access, otherwise leave as GUEST

Password: Set your password if your username requires it, otherwise leave blank

It's relatively simple. The way SMB works is establishing a direct connection between the PS2 and a PC via the SMB protocol, standard to Windows and Mac OSX systems (This will be a Windows guide).

To achieve that effect, you require an Ethernet cable. When purchasing one, make sure that said cable is a Cross-Over one (for connecting directly) or a standard one (for connecting via a Router, not recommended).

Now, on the PC side, you need to configure your Ethernet card to have a pre-set IP adress. You can change that through the Network Center, where you can access individual Network Cards. In the properties of your Ethernet card, input these:

Example PC Ethernet Card Config:

IP: 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Leave the DNS options blank.

Next, create a folder where you will store your games on any drive of yours, inside it, create two folders - CD and DVD for ISO's of each type respectively. Once done, right-click on the parent folder and enter Properties. Add this folder to a Share which you will call "PS2SMB" via Advanced Sharing, which can be found under the Sharing tab and allow Guests to use it by clicking the Permissons button and selecting the Guest option. If you don't have a Guest account, you can set it to share with Everyone which is the default setting.

The PC part is done, on the PS2, enter those settings in the Network Settings of OPL, reflecting the PC's IP and giving the PS2 a different one within the same range, for example 192.168.1.101. Set the port to 445, the Share Name to "PS2SMB", the login to "Guest" and leave the password blank. Remember to set Network Startup to Automatic in general options as well.

Example OPL Config:

-PS2-
IP: 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

-PC-
IP: 192.168.1.100
Port: 445
Share Name: PS2SMB
Login: Guest
Password:

Now, download the iso2opl program if you want to make renaming quick, or rename your games yourself in the following format:

REGIONCODE_RELEASENUMBER.RELEASENUMBER.NAME.iso

For example:

SCES_500.01.Tekken Tag Tournament.iso

The release numbers and regions can be found by opening the ISO or they can be automatically detected by iso2opl. Operating the program is easy - all you have to do is type "iso2opl SCAN" in the Command Prompt while exploring that folder in it and it will rename all ISO's in a given directory accordingly (sometimes bugs up, so you may have to do it manually). You can also create a shortcut to iso2opl which will scan for you by typing the extra SCAN command in the destination, like this:

X:\YourSharedFolder\DVD\iso2opl.exe SCAN

or

X:\YourSharedFolder\CD\iso2opl.exe SCAN

However, that way the Command Prompt will close after all operations, making it hard to observe errors.

In case of any issues, feel free to PM me tomorrow, I haven't set up PS2SMB in a long time, so I have to check my own settings. Don't worry - you can do it. Vista is not an issue here - I do it on Seven and it works just fine. The SMB protocol is the same, anyone can set this up with a little patience.
