Hacking 3DSXL NES Emulation

I bought a 3DS XL recently and I was wondering, can playing NESDS can mess up the screen like on a DSiXL? Also, I'm using a DSTwo if it matters.
 
Turns out that wasn't the case. It was a rumor started by somebody based on something else that happened.

Actually, it can mess up the screen on the DSi XL. However, running the pixel test/fix homebrew at maximum setting for a half an hour fixed it. Tested it with Contra (plausible deniability as Contra DS actually uses nesDS code) just shortly after getting it.
 
i never understood how image burn could be possible with an lcd screen, i mean it was an issue with CRT because of the phosphorus coating ,like on old crt projection tv's and plasmas its an issue ,but lcd dont get image burn cause there is no phosphorus ,unless there is some other reason for this to occur i dont know about

Any details? We never heard what the actual issue or cause was, or why it's related to nesDS and not any of the other hundreds of homebrew. It always seems so fishy to me, like people hear about it and then leave nesDS running and get the same sort of issue they'd get leaving any other game or homebrew on the same screen for hours or something.

I left it running for half an hour to an hour paused and got a bit of the "burn in" other people reported. After that happened I ran the pixel tester/fixer homebrew and set it to cycle the colors at the maximum rate and after 30-45 minutes of that the screen was back to normal. I have no idea whether it also happens with commercial games or other homebrew or even why it seems to be mainly an issue with nesDS.

Still, shouldn't it take more than an hour for that to happen considering many games have parts on the screen that stay the same like the status bars in RPGs and it hasn't been reported with those.
 
Some parts of the screen versus the whole screen might be the issue. As another user stated LCD screens don't have the type of burn-in old CRT/plasma screens were famous for that could happen to any part that was the same image for too long.

No, but the pixels can get "stuck" in a certain pattern rather than relaxing back to neutral like they should. It is usually temporary but can last for days or even weeks under normal conditions (which is why you "exercise" them with that pixel test homebrew).
 
Here is a link to a pixel fixer video i made specifically for the 3ds. It is made in the correct dimensions and in '3d". Download/convert it with your favorite 3ds video downloader/converter, and set it to loop in the 3ds video player.

 
I've had the issue myself on my DSi XL several times, and it's mainly due to NES games typically having a very static HUD. I used to play my DSi XL at night, and whenever I forget to turn it off before falling asleep I wake up to see a burned in image when I reset the DSi XL. It happened to me in several games (including actual DS games, the DStwo menu, and the built-in DSi internet browser), so it's not the fault of nesDS.
I've always fixed it by running the PixelFixer at full brightness for an hour though. Should work fine on the 3DS unless the part of the screen not used by DS games gets burned in too.
 
I've played many emulators on xl for long periods including nesds. I think the fact is that some screens are just more prone to getting stuck pixels than others. As long as there's a fix for those with the issue though, it shouldn't be a problem.
I think ppl panic cause it is worded wrong. An image burning in is definitely alarming, but that isn't the case.
 
Do the NES emu look better or worse on the 3DS XL ? Also does anybody knows how the other emus look on it?

So it's only happened for people on the DSi XL?

I've fallen asleep with games running on my DSi before and never noticed it.
I think so, I haven't seen any complaints about this on anything but the DSi XL.

Okay, I looked up how this could happen on an LCD, and it turns out it's not actually what you call image burn. Read below:

Both plasma-type and LCD-type displays exhibit a similar phenomenon called transient image persistence, which is sometimes confused with screen burn but is not permanent. In the case of plasma-type displays transient image persistence is caused by charge build-up in the pixel cells (not cumulative luminance degradation as with burn-in), which can be seen sometimes when a bright image that was set against a dark background is replaced by a dark background only; this image retention is usually released once a typical-brightness image is displayed and does not inhibit the display's typical viewing image quality. -Wikipedia
