You can just use one from a phone or buy one. Android phones and iPhones come with a "wall charger" that's just a usb-to-outlet plug.
Yeah, I know. I have quite a few. But they can be a bit more bulky than just standard one-piece wall chargers, and I would like this retracting one to keep with me on the go, so the less bulk, the better.

Well, this may not be right... but my father used to tell me to not use another powerbrick besides the one that the device came with. I did this once, and my Motorola Atrix was super hot after only 5 mins.

That's because of the differences in the voltage/wattage output... given enough time, if you plug your 3DS into a charger with way higher output than what the regular charger is supposed to give, you probably might fry your 3DS, or at the very least, fry the battery.

This^

The 3DS needs a 4,6V 900mA DC adapter.

I'm using this usb cable charger on my US(220v) and Jp(110v) units. They charge perfectly fine using my laptop/pc. Havent tried using this usb cable charger on the wall outlet though using an adapter. Best partner for this cable charger is a power bank. 4x the battery on the go :)

Dont buy retractable ones! The cable on those are so thin that after awhile it'll stop working from pulling apart so many times.
I was kinda thinking the thinner cable would make it charge slower, too.
Aside from being poor quality, you're buying from DX (were you to get that one). And aside from that retractable chargers are kinda ugly.

Actually its more dude to it being plugged into a computer USB port. The wall charges faster.

can you recommend a wall charger(usb adapter) suitable for the 3ds??
I have a bunch of different wall adapters and I use them all mixed and matched among my different USB chargers without issue. You can grab a cheap wall adapter for the B&N Nook, for example, at B&N. or get something much cheaper online.
