This is the Wii U's current launch lineup (some titles are launch-window meaning that it'll come out within 3 months of launch).

http://g1.globo.com/tecnologia/E3/2012/noticia/2012/06/no-wii-u-filmes-do-netflix-podem-ser-assistidos-em-tela-do-controle.html

Personally, I think this is a killer lineup mostly because of the sales potential.
  1. New Super Mario Bros. U: Both NSMB games have both sold in the 25 million range. They're extremely popular and I'm sure this version will also sell a lot.
  2. Wii Fit U: Wii Fit is incredibly popular among the casuals with the first one selling about 23 million by May 2010 and Wii Fit Plus selling 18.49 million units by April 2011.
  3. Nintendo Land: I'm sure this will appeal to the casuals in a similar matter to Wii Sports. It shows off the features of the Wii U and looks like a pretty fun mini-game collection.

And then when you get into games that should appeal to core gamers, there is Pikmin 3, Rayman Legends, ZombiU, Project P-100, Lego City Undercover and New Super Mario Bros. U which I mentioned above. Didn't mention the ports as they generally wouldn't attract new consumers (unless you've only owned a Wii which in that case, I feel bad for you).

Overall, this is a pretty good launch lineup.

My problem with the launch lineup is that none of these games are real system sellers, the kind of games that make a brand new console a must have at launch. Will people go out and buy a (let's say) $300-400 console so they can purchase a game with a costly peripheral too? The New Super Mario Brothers games sell well, sure, but would a person buy a console for NSMB, or just buy NSMB because it's on a console they already have?

We really don't know all that much about Project P-100; it looks interesting, but there's not much to go on beyond that. Pikmin has a following, but it's not really a top tier Nintendo franchise. Lego City Undercover looks like a Lego take on GTA; that's nice enough, but a) the Lego games aren't really big on attracting core audiences, and b) core gamers could just play an actual GTA game (like the upcoming GTA V. I was actually surprised that Nintendo didn't try to get it for the Wii U; that sort of announcement could have made a decisive dent in the conference). New Super Mario Bros. isn't more of a casual take on the Mario series (that's not to say it's bad, of course); a real core focused Mario game would be something along the lines of a new Galaxy game.

The only games that are really interesting me right now are Zombi U and Rayman Legends (though I'm not really sold on all the new features). Those games are nice, sure, but not worth buying a brand new console.

The launch lineup isn't bad, and I commend Nintendo for putting a lot more effort into it than they did for the 3DS. Still, it isn't all that stellar either. A lot of people are skeptical of the console, and many casual players (the kind that Nintendo courted with the Wii) are just confused by it. Even CNN, a prominent and well funded news source, was still under the impression that the Wii U was only a new controller after E3 2012.

Nintendo has a good amount of potential challenges on their plate. It will be interesting to see how they tackle them come this fall.

i agree with what you said about mario. honestly i think nintendo just did it because its quick and easy to program. i also agree that lego city seems to resemble gta. i thought that when they first showed it at the e3 conference. on the other hand, you can't forget that gamers now adays not only look at what games the console will have, but also what features and 3rd party app will be included. netflix, hulu, youtube, ect. netflix and hulu arn't really anything to get excited about because they have been done befor, but this may be the first console to openly support youtube. granted you could get the previous consoles to do it, but it did't seem really official. at the moment it seems like youtube will partner with nintendo on this, meaning it will have better functionality (as far as i know). anyway there are also other features as well such as videochat, text chat, and miiverse. these features alone are enough for me to buy one, including zombieu as well. :) if you get bored with a game, just start making friends on miiverse, for games that will be more exciting.

ALL of the LEGO games are interesting to me. They have so much content and are fun.
The last LEGO games I owned were LEGO Racers and LEGO Rock Raiders. Don't get me wrong, the LEGO Star Wars/Batman/etc games are fun from what I've played, but I've never seriously enjoyed one enough to want to buy it. But this one looks really fresh and original for some reason. It seems to be filled with funny references and stuff (The Matrix, and Super Mario, just from the E3 trailer), kinda like Kid Icarus: Uprising, which I really liked. :yaywii:

The only reason GTA V wasn't announced at E3 is because Rockstar games doesn't really announce GTA universe anything at E3 since the slip up with GTA IV. Also, it is rumored to come out on the Wii U and considering the 3rd party deals that Nintendo has been making (thank god) I would find this to be a credible rumor.

Mass Effect 3, nuff said :)
Honestly, if I ever do decide to play the Mass Effect series, I'll just do it on my 360... After all, since the Wii U version doesn't have the first 2, you can't port your character and stuff from the first 2 to the Wii U version of 3. :(

I didn't bother with the first one and hated the second one's demo. I've heard so much praise about this game that I do want to play it eventually. I doubt I'll buy it if it does come with a 60 dollar price tag. After all, I can get it for 30 bucks or less for PS3 :D

It's rumored, but we can't go off that alone. Plus, considering the rocky relationship between Rockstar and Nintendo, it's certainly possible that it may not happen at all.

And it was really good.

And sold horribly. That's not a good way of convincing a developer that making games for your system is a worthwhile and valuable effort.

Sold even worse on psp. Not nintendo's fault.

The problem was, GTA Chinatown Wars was a test for Rockstar to see if Nintendo's audience would respond well to their games... and well, we know how that turned out. (From what I remember hearing, apparently the people at Rockstar felt frustrated with how Nintendo handled the game. If I find that anywhere, I'll be sure to post it).

It didn't do well on the PSP, sure, but Rockstar already knew its games could sell like hotcakes with Sony's audience.

- GTA games usually "sell like hotcakes with Sony's audience".
- Chinatown Wars has shit sales on PSP.
- Chinatown Wars has better, but still pretty bad sales on Nintendo.

->NINTENDO IS THE PROBLEM.

Logic.

Chinatown Wars didn't sell because noone wants to play top down GTA games anymore. What is this, 1999?

Actually there are many many people who wanted a new top down GTA. I personally prefer GTA2 to all the others, however the GBA & DS ones you couldn't do as much crazy shit that I want from the series.

If it wasn't for piracy I would have still bought it, it was a game that was well done.

Of course, it would apply to a niche audience, but it would be completely unrealistic to expect an audience comparable to the size of GTA IV, considering half the people who've played GTA IV probably don't even know GTA was ever top down.

I don't know how old are you, but I'm 26 and people with my age or older LOVED GTA II. But we (people with my age) are not the main target of industry, because we buy less than teenagers and kids, we are, as @Alexrose said, part of a niche audience.

We cant blame Nintendo for having colorful games or childish games, because Nintendo still is the market leader (before some children start to cry, Nintendo is far from being the technological leader, I'm talking about the sales).

Edit: By the way, I bet that half, or even more of GTA sells (since GTA III) was for kids trying to show to their friends that they are already growed up. (in my generation the same happened with Mortal Kombat)
