I've always wondered why they continue with the region lock BS. They use to use it cause EU and U used different resolutions but now i just don't get it. I liked that Sony ditched region protection this gen.

Handhelds don't have different refresh rates.

The old CRT refresh rate was 60 hz in NTSC countries and 50 hz in PAL/SECAM countries and indeed have different resolutions.
Late model CRT's used higher refresh rates, LCD's have up to 200hz of refresh rate...

They did regionlocking for the refresh rates and resolutions altough alot of the games where at the same resolution.
I think it was purely to combat refresh lag.

One big reason is legalities about importing/exporting content that's not properly "available" elsewhere. Another is a way to protect potential sales--funneling as much money into publisher's pockets as is possible. Importing creates a devide between the publisher's and your money :/

So in other words, there is no really good reason for it.

One of my friends explained it well. It's because, for example, the US Nintendo wants money, yes? If US gamers buy Japanese games (to get them early, etc) then the US Nintendo doesn't make money, the Japanese Nintendo does. Basically it's to ensure that the sects of Nintendo have "fair" profit in that US gamers will likely (granted the few with imported 3DS's) will buy US games.

^ That's a good reason for it.

I'd much rather not have a region lock but then there's a large potential for US Nintendo's decline due to oversea sales/imports. Hell Japan's Nintendo would pretty much have a monopoly if not for the region lock xD I know I'd import most of my games if not for the region lock.

I think that's more true of US/Europe; not a lot of gamers can read Japanese, and not all Japanese games have an English option. English, on the other hand, is usually a first or second language in Europe, so importing never had any down sides. I used to import games from the US, though, for games that weren't released here for a long time afterwards (like the GBA/DS Fire Emblem games). I never did get around to learning Japanese beyond counting and basic words .

you know that region locking isn't a universal thing, right? previous nintendo handhelds didn't region lock, and various consoles don't (or selectively) region lock. importing is expensive, so NoJ wouldn't have a global monopoly without region locks (even if you ignore language)

I'd much rather not have a region lock for the 3DS but then there's a large potential...

More understandable? Still I know a good amount of people who'd rather import games which (on a good day) can cost maybe $5-$10 more than US games would within 2-3 weeks of Japan's release which is usually still a year ahead of US release. I don't mind US games but it's just they usually take a lot longer to release. Granted, universal releases near the launch of the console are usually fairly quick but later they usually get worse.
