A very invalid argument. I dunno even WHERE TO START?

He said himself that the laws of nature would not apply to God, hence why is God bound by ANY law at all. Why does 'time' have to exist for God to exist, why is it hard to believe that God himself made time? Steve says we need 3 things to make a 'universe', Energy, Space, and Matter......so what happened to forth ingredient, where's the TIME for this 'universe' to exist or to function in! Common people we are not talking about some mythological god named Zeus here, we are talking about the ONE! Ask yourself, seriously, if you were ALMIGHTY and ALL POWERFUL...would you need something as futile as 'time' to exist or would you be the one to create it yourself?

i know Steve is famous and written many great books, and he's probably a great person too! But to just get up on the media and show a pope who died from not believing in some science due to ignorance of the past and MANIPULATE people to keep with facts from science about the universe, and then right at the end you say 'That's why I don't believe in God'. What are we..12?!? AND to top it off he said their is no heaven or hell or any afterlife....IS there a proven fact that i missed about this, did Steve die and come back to know and come back to tell us??

Honestly....

there is an after life because in order for us to exist we must also not exist, when we no longer exist here we must exist elsewhere. But we must not exist there either. Also I don't believe in any religion whatsoever. Which must mean that I do believe in every religion AHHHHHHHAHAHAAHAHHHHHHH

Dude... what up with the comic sans? But you do make a good point about time. I wondering myself why Hawkings didn't mention time as an ingredient in our universe.

And here lies the biggest flaw in Hawking's reasoning. When he mentioned space as a ingredient, he forgot to tell the audience that space and time form a continuum, according to General Relativity. Basically, they are one. You can't have space without time or time without space. The thing is, while he applies this aspect to his reasoning, he then uses aspects of Quantum Mechanics. The problem is, you can't use both set of laws at the same time. They don't work together. Which is why there are so many who are looking for a unifying theory, my personal favorite being String Theory. It just so happens that this theory, one of the most, if not the most, popular theory of unification doesn't specifically forbid the existence of strange, otherworldly beings who can't be touched but who can see us and maybe interact with us.

Hey guys, as some of you seem really stubborn on this, you should read up on the Invisible Pink Unicorn. If you think it is impossible for an invisible pink unicorn to be standing right next to you, why do you even think there would be a god hovering above you? Why would said god be able to circumvent the laws of nature and would this be impossible for the invisible pink unicorn?

I believe.....I can't say what actually I believe in, I do believe in something that actually keeps everything together, in place.....I also believe that death is only a one step on a big journey..So why do you feel an urge to think that believers are stubborn?

So why do you feel an urge to think that believers are stubborn?
Most religious beliefs are based upon nothing, and many religious people refuse to change their beliefs when presented with contrary evidence. That is, in many ways, the epitome of stubbornness.
But the mere point of the word "believe" means you accept something without any given proof or confirmed fact.
And I'm not talking about religion here, but actual belief..I'm not a religious person, I was brought up as one, but decided that I do not trust religion, however, I do believe in something without searching for any proof that it exist..and nobody can give me proof that it DOESN'T exist..
I wouldn't call myself stubborn.

I used the word "religion" to signify any kind of supernatural, "spiritual" type thinking. Should have clarified that.

nobody can give me proof that it DOESN'T exist..
I wouldn't call myself stubborn.

This isn't how it works. When you make a claim the onus is on you to support it with evidence. Talking about things that are impossible to measure is a pointless endeavor and the exact reason why people view this behavior as stubbornness.

Hehehe, but as I said, point of believing is not to need an evidence....I don't claim it does exist, I claim I believe it exist..if you ask why, I'll say because I believe there is more to everything, than this (very primitive) form of life, and short lifespan. I have no answer what happens when one dies, I have no answer where did universe come from, how it started to be, where it begins and where it ends, and I don't trust scientists with their answers on these questions! I see it all as theories, something that maybe happened!

How is it stupid? Do you not realise that if you believe it is possible for a god to hover above your heads and defy the laws of nature, that it is equally possible for any other completely invisible, intangible, inaudible, etc being to stand right next to you?

You're a hypocrite.

Also, unrelated: whoa, Toni! Haven't seen you for years!

Well if you don't believe there is a God, I fail to see why you'd be unable to sleep. One of the most fascinating things about science is the ability to change a theory, discover more about us and who we are and just about our universe in general. Science (in itself) has never claimed to be set in stone unlike what some people teach. If I could count the times human's models of science were thrown completely out the window.... :P

But seriously OP explain, why wouldn't you be able to sleep? Is it a fear of a possible God or an excited kind of not being able to sleep?

It was not fear of a possible god, it was the thought of how much the human race has accomplished in such little time, yet how much more we have yet to learn about life and the universe. And how our time is limited and one day humans will become extinct unless we discover something amazing (probably way after I'm gone). I loved this video because it shows that science is slowly uncovering reality, something religion fails to do.

I think that believing that there is a god or creature consciously holding us back and manipulating us is only going to end one way; If people continuously think there is 'an invisible pink unicorn' (call it god, nyan cat, whatever you believe) controlling our fates and 'souls' then it is only going to suppress the capabilities of the human mind. This has been happening for centuries.

People believed that the earth was flat, an eclipse was a wolf god, and many many more things untill we discovered the truth. Science has been making these discoveries all of this time, slowly increasing our knowledge and abilities and intelligence. It is like we are slowly evolving. I like to think of it like this:

Let's say we are like an animal in the sea, only in this case Earth is the sea and space is land we want to get to. How did previous animals get to that point? Through evolution. I think the human race has potential for evolution and Science is an important factor for this. While beliefs are good to keep society in check, I personally can't see how religion is helping mankind.

That is why I couldn't sleep.

Color is visible, therefore it can't be invisible and pink. Problem?

No, this is were educated theists come and say that the idea of evolution and God aren't mutually exclusive. Which, as they back it up with scripture, is true.

This has got to be the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I'm not even gonna argue.

You're a hypocrite.
Sight...
You must think you're really smart, don't you?
First of all, an entity comparable to the description of God in some scriptures would not delve within our universe. He wouldn't be next to us. He would be external to our reality, which accounts for his characteristics of being invisible, intangible and such. If something is outside of our universe, you must acknowledge the VERY strong possibility, if not certainty, that it exists within a different world with very different "laws of nature" than the ones we can currently experience. Thus, such a being would not be circumventing the laws of nature as we experience them, as he obeys different ones.

Secondly, can we determine the existence/non-existence of invisible pink unicorns? Actually, the answer is "yes." Unicorns would be pink if they reflected pink electromagnetic radiation (i.e., light). However, in order to be invisible, the unicorns would reflect no electromagnetic radiation. Therefore, the term "invisible pink unicorn" is self contradictory. Therefore, we know absolutely that they could not exist. I don't know who invented the term "invisible pink unicorns," but they were obviously deficient in their physics education. However, for the sake of argument, let's change the term and drop the "pink" part. Is it possible to determine whether or not invisible unicorns exist somewhere in the universe? Technically, it would be very unlikely that any organism would be invisible. The only reasonable chemical basis for living organisms in this universe is carbon-based life. This would ensure that unicorns would always be visible. Although possible that unicorns might be invisible due to being made of anti-matter, such existence would be problematic, since their interaction with ordinary matter would result in their immediate and spectacular destruction. Could unicorns be made of exotic matter? While possible, there is no evidence from physics that any creatures could be made of exotic matter. At present, it is possible to detect exotic matter only indirectly through particle physics and through its ability to bend light (only detectable through gravitational lensing of distant galaxies). At this point, we would be unable to detect a unicorn made of exotic matter. Thus an invisible unicorn could hardly exist in our universe. It may exist in other, parallel, universes as per string theory. Just like a god-like entity could exist outside of our universe.

Now, unless you can apply a similar reasoning to a god-like being, such a being could exist.

... And now I just feel like I wasted my time.

The purpose of the Invisible Pink Unicorn is to show how useless the philosophical arguments in favor of a god existing are. The same arguments could be used for any number of ridiculous beings and none of them are falsifiable.
