It's been said pretty often around this forum that the 3DS won't have a redesign. I disagree.

1. Second analog stick. By releasing the Circle Pad Pro, Nintendo acknowledged that there was a problem with the current 3DS layout. The Circle Pad Pro is a unique accessory tailor-made for the 3DS. When Nintendo eventually releases a 3DS revision, they would have to make yet another accessory to fit the form-factor of said revision. Unless you expect Nintendo to release multiple versions of this accessory to suit each 3DS model, it's simply not happening.

It's been said that there is also no space to add the second analog stick. Right now with the current form-factor, I would have to agree that there's no space. It isn't a lost cause, though. We may see a die-shrink that allows it to fit within the current design but even if that doesn't happen, they could always increase the size of the system. There's nothing forcing them to stick with the current form-factor.

2. L1/R2 buttons. The Circle Pad Pro contains an extra set of triggers. Naysayers have been saying that adding it to the system would bring about too much bulk. While they could simply increase the size of the system, they could also implement Classic Controller L/R triggers.

That would work just fine.

3. I think it's obvious that the screen's viewing angle isn't the greatest. There have been recent advancements in 3D screen technology with an increased viewing angle. It would be absurd to think that Nintendo wouldn't add those screens in a 3DS revision. That would help extinguish most of the hate for the screen.

4. Let's face it, the 3DS's battery life is shit. It's pretty much a guarantee that Nintendo will at least attempt to improve it in a redesign.

Nintendo has released a redesign for pretty much every hand-held system. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from continuing the pattern now.

if a redesign had this many new features, id certainly pick one up.

That said I dont see that as a reason not to enjoy the 3DS I have now, the ds lite didnt make me enjoy my ds any less.

There is also the fact that the GB got 2 revisions, the GBA 2, and the DS 3. Why would the 3DS not get a revision?
Me, I decided to get the 3DS v2, ideally when rumours of a 3DS v3 come out (when prices lower and accessories are still available), giving me a compromise between the hackability of old systems with the functionality of new systems. Considering that I have quite a bit of other game systems, I am in no rush to buy the 3DS, anyways.

I wouldn't consider the DSI XL a revision. I would call it the 'elite' DS. You know how they have Xbox 360 Elite etc. Like that.

I thought people are saying it wouldn't happen soon. I'll give it one more year.
1. Second analog stick. By releasing the Circle Pad Pro, Nintendo acknowledged that there was a problem with the current 3DS layout. The Circle Pad Pro is a unique accessory tailor-made for the 3DS. The only problem with that is if they make a 3ds game that required all the buttons
and slide pads, people who have the 3ds now would have to buy a slide pad.

I'm not quite sure they would be willing to do that.
I still believe they could have been push to make it by devs, but it could be for 3ds connectivity with the wii u.

2. L1/R2 buttons. The Circle Pad Pro contains an extra set of triggers. Naysayers have been saying that adding it to the system would bring about too much bulk. While they could simply increase the size of the system, they could also implement Classic Controller L/R triggers.

True. That would make the 3ds a nice wii u remote alternative.
I not even sure those other 3d screens are fully efficient or affordable. Would be nice to have vertical 3d tho...
4. Let's face it, the 3DS's battery life is shit. It's pretty much a guarantee that Nintendo will at least attempt to improve it in a redesign.
I say it is decent for the size and hardware. You can only make the battery bigger at this point...
Nintendo has released a redesign for pretty much every hand-held system. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from continuing the pattern now.
True, but didn't they say they don't want to release so many?

here are my problems with your thoughts. Adding the R2/L2 buttons in a comfortable manner (behind the R and L buttons) would absolutely make the unit much more bulky. If they opt for the classic controller design as you suggest, I would be extremely disappointed, I would much rather get the circle pad expansion if that were the case. Did you ever use the ZL and ZR buttons on the original classic controller? Talk about awkward and uncomfortable.

Having said that, I really wish that a revision or at least the circle pad expansion would include force feedback, its a shame that the 3DS does not have rumble especially when they rereleased StarFox 64 for the system, the very game that introduced rumble.

As for battery life though, I see people complain about it all the time, but I have yet to have an issue with my 3DS and its battery life. I even use the thing as my mp3 player at work, with the unit close it lasts for my entire 8 and a half hour shift and then some. If I'm ever out and about there is no way I'm playing it for more than a couple of hours, and then when I return home I just place it back in its charge cradle, I have not once had the issue of it dying on me. I'm sure the battery life does upset some people, but like I said its never been a problem for me, and I don't even decrease brightness or ever put it in power save mode, so I just don't identify with that complaint.

Frankly though, I can't see a way to incorporate all the features of the circle pad expansion (the joystick (wouldn't be a problem to add) and the 2 extra triggers) without making the handheld either too bulky or too awkward. In a lot of ways I think the expansion makes sense, you know that many many games are not going to incoporate the second circle pad and the 2 extra triggers even after the the expansion is released, so it would almost seem like an inconvenience to bulk up the size of the device for features that wont be used for every game.

I dunno, I can see it happening, but I don't think it can be executed in a way that would truly satisfy me.

The slider pad is optional; only certain games utilize it, and those games are playable without the slider pad. It would be illogical to release a revision with added buttons, which only certain games will be able to use. Even if newer games all support those added buttons, that could be considered a whole new handheld instead of a 'revision' since those games won't be playable on an old 3ds without the slider pad; people who want those 'newer games' on an old 3ds would be forced to buy a slider pad, or upgrade to the revision new handheld. Instead of forcing the slider pad and all of the extra buttons on 3ds owners, they released the add-on for the people who want them. I don't really get how "Nintendo acknowledged that there was a problem with the current 3DS layout."

Absolutely, they could make the system bigger, but that defeats the purpose of the 3ds being small and compact.

2. L1/R2 buttons. The Circle Pad Pro contains an extra set of triggers. Naysayers have been saying that adding it to the system would bring about too much bulk. While they could simply increase the size of the system, they could also implement Classic Controller L/R triggers. Same as #1. Illogical to add unnecessary buttons.

I don't really care about the screen, so no comment.

4. Let's face it, the 3DS's battery life is shit. It's pretty much a guarantee that Nintendo will at least attempt to improve it in a redesign. Yeah, it's shit.

Nintendo has released a redesign for pretty much every hand-held system. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from continuing the pattern now. Except that none of them added buttons. It'd be difficult for them to put them under the same family.
Okey, that's what I have to say~

The fact that the 3DS will get a revision is simply inevitable, but just not too soon. Perhaps in a year or so.

Just because the Slider Pad Pro exists doesn't mean that Nintendo is acknowledging the lack of 2nd analog as a "design flaw" or a problem with the current 3DS layout. that's just assumption at best. Nintendo probably made that accessory because Capcom MH devs demanded it, plus it works well with their game (which devs acknowledged the need for better camera controls, in the form of a second analog stick). guess what, it's probably not only Capcom that wanted it, but Kojima as well (i dunno if you guys remember, but back when the slider pad was still a rumor, there were also rumors that Kojima Studios had their hands on one). of course, Capcom already have wrapped Revelations around this new feature as well.

basically, it's Nintendo compromising and giving in to the demands of the devs, in exchange for which, the devs make an awesome game that implements features they want. I guess Nintendo really wants Monster Hunter to happen on the 3DS. if the devs didn't want it enough, they'd probably not make one.

as for the revision, eventually, yeah. but not so soon. at least, i hope not. i don't wanna be forced to buy a new hardware just to be able to play games that have new features.

Umm the big discussion about a 3DS revision that the TC made is slight incorrect. What some ppl are insinuating is that the next revision would be a 3DS Lite despite the fact that a 3DS is almost asymmetrical in size to a DSLite, while us ppl who like to think about things before sounding stupid say the next revision would be a 3DSXL and that a new revision wont come out in less than year like the DSLite ppl think. It was never a debate over whether or not a new model will be made, just what kind of model.

People still whining about the battery life?

What about turning off 3D and WiFi and lowering brightness alot.
I clocked in about 5 - 6 hours without 3D, Wi-Fi on, brightness 2.

I will edit my 3DS review when I get back with all the latest stuff.

There'll be a revision, you're right about that. I just don't think it's gonna happen quite as soon as a lot of people think. And it's pretty reasonable to expect some improvements in the battery life and display, or else what would be the selling point? As for the second slide pad and dual shoulder buttons though ... I'm guessing it'll depend on sales for the games that use the CirclePadPro accessory, as well as sales of the accessory itself. It is, after all, optional even for the games that enable it (so far).

Is the battery life even that big of an issue? Don't have the 3D and Wireless on and the brightness up at max and you'll have some pretty awesome battery life. Oh, and with wireless off, brightness down to 2 and playing on a flash cart (DS mode), I'm getting 7-8 hours of battery life.

kind of negates the point of a 3ds though

I don't remember a Nintendo Handheld that didn't have a redesign?

However, it will not be soon. They will play the market as always. And just when we are cozy and happy with our 3DS', they will offer a shinier/brighter/lighter version that woos our hearts.

I believe that the Circle Pad Pro was only made to suit games that would absolutely need it. Nintendo has given us an option to add more buttons if they are neccesary, From the games I've all seen and played, none of them really needed extras buttons. It is better to have a smaller amount of buttons from the beginning so if there wasn't enough more could be added. If it were the other way around, the buttons could not have been removed and we would all have had to pay more for the console in its entirety.

2. L1/R2 buttons. The Circle Pad Pro contains an extra set of triggers. Naysayers have been saying that adding it to the system would bring about too much bulk. While they could simply increase the size of the system, they could also implement Classic Controller L/R triggers.
j8IBs.jpg

That would work just fine.

Buttons like that would be harder to reach and more uncomfortable to use, which would mean bulk would be the only other option, nobody likes bulk.

The 3D screen in it's current status does not disturb me, and I'm assuming there are others that share my opinion.

4. Let's face it, the 3DS's battery life is shit. It's pretty much a guarantee that Nintendo will at least attempt to improve it in a redesign.

Wouldn't it be better for Nintendo to release a more powerful battery for the 3DS we have so people who really feel the urge have more battery power can be satisfied? It would be cheaper than buying a brand new 3DS, too. Nintendo pride themselves on having low-price quality stuff.

Nintendo has released a redesign for pretty much every hand-held system. There's absolutely nothing stopping them from continuing the pattern now.

The GBC Added Colour and supported games of its own.
The GBA SP Added a backlight
The DS lite Added a brighter backlight that supports more color.
The DSi Added internet and an online shop and games of its own.
Sure, The GB Micro and DSi XL added nothing but different size, but they weren't exactly best sellers.
What's left to add for a redesign? The 3DS XL or Micro, and Micro couldn't possibly work with all those buttons. So it must be the 3DS XL, and people don't like bulk.
Questions?
