Yoshinori Kitase, producer of Final Fantasy XIII-2, has hinted that the next iteration of Final Fantasy could see it drift away from its turn-based roots and be an action-RPG.

In an interview, Kitane told us that the increasing popularity of action-RPGs compared to their turn-based equivalents represented "a trend…you ignore at your peril."

"I think the nature of the franchise is to present something new each time," Kitase said. "In the global market we see many players moving away from games that used turn-based systems toward what you might term an action-RPG.

"That's a trend, and you ignore things like that at your peril."

Kitase went on to say that changes introduced in Final Fantasy XIII showed that the series was moving forward with each iteration - but left the door wide open for more subtantial changes to be made in the next full game in the series.

"FFXIII and FFXIII-2's battle systems have those elements of speed and action that are the key words for us, though that doesn't necessarily mean we're going to stick to the same route in our next game," he said. "That's something only time can tell."

Sez what now ? The last main series non-rerelease Turn Based Final Fantasy game was X (or X-2 if you count it).

12 and 13 *are* action RPGs (they are just a bit more transparent about using a timed turn based system in the background than most action RPGs (hint: Computers cannot actually do more things at at time than they have CPU cores, therefore you're never going to have a true real time action RPG on any currently existing hardware). Its also one of the reasons the reception of 12 and 13 has been so mixed. Lots of people like action RPGs lots of older FF players don't.

Heck most main FF games since IV have been action RPGs with the option to twiddle settings such that they behave like turn based games (the ATB system is nearly always time based rather than truly turn based), IX and X are the only two exceptions I can think of.

So they are going to make their action RPG an action RPG. I am both confused and impressed.

What?
12, sure that's action RPG but 13, that's turn based. It's like X-2 (which you even said is one of the 'last' turn based FFs) just... faster.

What are you trying to say here? :) Why would hardware have anything to do with the genre of the game to do? We've had true real time action rpgs since NES days. See Crystalis. You think they can't do this on todays consoles and computer which are just so much stronger than the NES?

I don't remember seeing the option in 13 to actually have game pause while you were in menus that X-2 had, that basically let you operate it as a turn-based RPG, but maybe I looked in the wrong place (and X-2 was less turn based than X was, X was truly turn based, X-2 was the usual ATB system with twiddling to make it ~traditionally turn based). I can be incredibly blind sometimes.

I'm saying "action RPGs" (as people like to envision them) aren't as different from turn-based systems as people like to pretend (because the design of most modern computers doesn't allow for it), action RPGs are more of a Timed Turn-based setup than everyone really moving at once and that the last few Final Fantasy games are about as Action RPG as you can practically get given that, so saying they are moving to an action RPG setup confuses me . Pretty much all action RPGs operate on a turn based sytem, in the background, its just that the turns have (short) timers on them* (and Final Fantasy has largely worked that way since IV with varying levels of timer speed) again with the exception of X which was actually a completely turn based setup (when you went next, within the flow of battle, depended entirely on your action and your stats, not on your reaction time). There's nothing particularly revolutionary about being an action RPG as compared to a traditional turn-based one apart from allowing people with good reflexes to show off a bit.

*This is why most Final Fantasy games and games like Baldur's Gate could easily allow you to tweak them into true turn based games in their settings, because that's how they really run in the background.

I just want a good one, they've been pretty mediocre since FF9.

I will not be trolled... i will not be trolled... crap trolled... FFX IS AM AMAZING GAME!!!

That's funny.

I don't know, it seems that Square Enix is starting to get a bit desperate here. It would be like turning a classic turn based strategy series into a modern FPS game to earn a quick buck... oh wait.

Modern systems are capable of several dozen gigaflops a second, any background processing is so fast that it is completely transparent and might as well be real time as far as human observation is concerned.

That doesn't sound half bad.

Eh, XIII was alright from what I played if you're in a turn based RPG mood. I stopped caring about FF storylines since forever, exception being IV and VI. I can't really blame them for trying to capture a bigger audience by making the genre a bit more action-y.

And everyone loved when Final Fantasy went ARPG with Crystal Chronicles and Final Fantasy Adventure (aka Sword of Mana) so it's not like they can't do ARPGs.

I think people forget that over time genres evolve along with the gamers and hardware. I've always looked upon games that stuck to their roots with respect(Dragon Quest games) but on the other hand I'd like to see them evolve and feature new things. DQ9 for ex was announced as a action rpg at first and I liked that idea.

That's not to say I don't like Final Fantasy's turn based combat but after Final Fantasy IX it never "felt" the same but maybe that was just me.

Besides Final Fantasy 11/12/Crisis Core featured action-y combat although it is technically turn based and honestly I kind of liked it.

If Action RPG=ATB system then im okay with it.
But if ARPG as in button mashing, no thanks

Square Enix really doesn't know where to go with their battle system, first ATB for many iterations. Then they turned to a MMO-style realtimey battle system and then to a unique, fairly complex battle system in FFXIII.
I think it's best if they returned to their roots and used a tweaked, modernized ATB system. It's all the rage now to go back to your roots (Mega Man, Sonic...) and "hardcore" RPGs like Dark Souls seem to sell very well (1.5 million copies iirc).
So a traditional, fairly hardcore Final Fantasy title would sell like crazy

I'm saying this again, VersusXIII would be best renamed to XV.
It's got nothing to do with XIII and it looks completely badass (plus it's an action RPG)

Oh well, I guess it's finally time to use this in relation to the FF series:

RIP, Final Fantasy. Killed just to become another mediocre Action-RPG in the current flood of ARPGs :(
