Initial reports indicate that the update is mandatory to play the game, and that it adds anti-piracy protections designed to block flashcarts. It’s also said to add a button in your Friends List that lets you join a buddy’s game in progress (presumably if the game has an online multiplayer mode and support for this new feature).

Nintendo is smart to put an anti-piracy update in a game like this. Hope this doesn't stop ds-mode flashcarts. The need to stop ds pirating doesn't really exist anymore. They should be focusing on protecting the current product (3DS games), not a battle they have already lost. Good to see Nintendo always fighting back at least. Super Mario 3D Land comes out Nov,13th 2011 in North America, and Nov, 18th 2011 in Europe.

I no longer pirate DS games. They just don't put any interesting titles out for that console any more.

But yeah if they change the protection schemes, I'm sure the top major cards will defeat it pretty fast.

as expected, surely Big N gonna find a way somehow,. like - sneaky or forcing user to upgrade fw to play 3ds titles.

"They should be focusing on protecting the current product (3DS games)" - not DS games.

SOO TRUEE :)

yeah...no point in fighting DS piracy at this point...hopefully DS Two will still work, I just ordered it...and I'm not worried for now...as I don't plan to pick this game up, also is it me or did Nintendo make Marios ass TOO visible on this? I've never seen him pose this way before...

Meh, if there's no flash cart update by then I'll simply resort to playing DS games on my DS lite. Nintendo must be so bored because they don't have to worry about 3DS piracy.

I won't be buying this anyway. The only game out soon that remotely interests me is Sonic Generations and maybe Mario Kart but after the last few versions even that is looking doubtful.

To me, to exchange my Atari,NES, SNES, GBA and NDS gameplay for just one game, is not worth it to me. I'll just wait till the flash card companies find a way around it.

Either you wait for a fix or you have a DS Lite and it will be patched sooner anyway, so Nintendo are wasting their times.

You guys are aware that nintendo may just be using these updates to assess the hackers abilities so they are better prepared for when they do bypass the firmware? Besides, Most current 3DS owners are either not pirating or not doing anything bigger then homebrew and some non-AP roms.

totally fucking lost my sale on a 3DS and this game (which I was REALLY thinking about) until a fix is released.

I like it how Nintendo commented on the 3DS saying that there will be forced updates, because people in the past didn't update their systems when Nintendo told them to.

well duh, who the fuck wants to lose their flashcart access!?

Yeah, I own a DS Lite for flashcarts. I probably won't pirate 3DS games (if it ever becomes possible) unless they're Japan or Europe exclusive or have been translated from Japanese of course. Nonetheless I don't really feel this affects anyone at the moment, though I'm not sure whether it does.

strange that this update and the bigger one later in november are so close to each other. chances are flash card teams have a fix already prepared but are waiting for the late november update before release it. it's not a big deal. i'm picking up this game and will hold off playing it until a fix is out. my 3ds can collect a little more dust til then. with uncharted3 (now playing) and zelda skyward sword out this month, i can hold off on a tiny 3DS title.

I have a DS phat used for all my old DS games and I am pretty sure there isnt much at this point they will do to stop that from happening but my question is if I want this games and go through the forced update, will it block me from using a 3ds flash card ( when the 3ds mode is finally hacked someday ) or since nothing is out yet that can run these 3ds roms, will this update that nintendo forces you to do go by the way side?

I think you misunderstood the point. It won't force the update, but you will have to update to play it. It's not automatic.

I'm confused on this.

Do we have to update to v2.2.0-4 to play the game or will the game contain the update itself?
Both, technically.

You will need to run that firmware or higher to play the game, but the card will include the update file so you can update from the card instead of over the internet.
