The GBA ports may not have had the greatest sound, but also understand, the audio hardware of the GBA vs the SNES are not the same. All that the GBA had was the legacy channels the GB had, plus 2 8-bit DACs for playing back wav audio. All implementations of audio sample mixing, excluding the legacy channels, was done by the CPU. The SNES had it's own dedicated audio hardware with 8 separate voices, special filters, etc. The SNES had it's own limits, such as a maximum of 64KB used for the audio at any given time with slow uploading to the audio system, whereas the GBA could theoretically have access to 32MB of audio data whenever it wanted, as well as streamed audio.

Honestly, when I think of Final Fantasy, I don't think of "great soundtrack" or "great voice acting". I just have different likings in those areas I guess.

But I think the GBA ports are just better for the quick save, unless I missed something and the PSX versions had one.

I've been waiting for Chrono Cross, mainly since I can't use popsloader on my Go (or at least CBA to if I could) and a PSN copy should work just fine.

As for the others, I may as well stick with the GBA ports. Graphics are a bit worse (not by much) but quick saving is awesome.

so what is this the 50 time they release the games ? either REMAKE THEM GOOD or dont release them again

Even though Nintendo does it, Microsoft does it, pretty much every company does it? They always have "reissues" of games for digital download. Nintendo has Virtual Console, Microsoft has Xbox Originals (or whatever it's called), even Steam has some of the older games available for download. Why are we whining now?

Also, this is the only time to my knowledge that Chrono Cross got re-released since its PSX debut. As for FFV and FFVI, everyone loves them so who cares?

yes
even do nintendo does it if nintendo want to re release a link to the past why not remake it full 3D ?

Not saying the GBA ports were bad overall. I was just pointing out what the developer was limited to. While they could have continued work on it to make a closer replica of the audio (as someone mentioned the work of Bregalad), they did have a deadline.

True, the GBA and the SNES had different sound hardware. My point is that had SquareEnix not treated those games so poorly, they could have nearly duplicated the MIDI instruments used on the SNES. The fact that a hacker accomplished this instead of the original developer speaks volumes about their incompetence regarding the Final Fantasy ports on GBA.

If they had a deadline, that's an excuse to consider. But I don't find it to be particularly compelling.

@Rydian: I agree with you, they were ports, and inferior at that. In passing, Nintendo's port of Zelda III also irritates me, but for different reasons.

@raulpica: You're entitled to your standards but in my opinion, they're too low. My point was that SquareEnix botched the job, and it was left to the hacker community had to clean up their mess.

As others have said, check out Bregalad's sound restoration hacks for FF5 and FF6 Advance. They're absolutely incredible. He recently updated FF5 again and apparently eliminated some of the lag during portions of the game and improved the instruments yet again. There's even orchestral samples for the intro in FF5 and the Opera scene for FF6. He's really made these GBA ports the definitive versions to play. There's also a color restoration hack for FF6A specifically that restores the SNES palettes to their original form and gets ride of the brightened GBA colors-

And yes it is very sad that an official developer is outdone by an online hacker. I've seen it happen more than once. Though it's TOSE to blame in this case, they were the ones who port the majority of Square Enix's Final Fantasy games (and Chrono Trigger). SE has used them ever since the PS1 era for this purpose, they were also responsible for the horrid loading times in the PS1 ports. Of course Square Enix takes some of the blame for allowing TOSE to port them at all and overseeing the process, but TOSE is the one responsible for all the code here.

I'd probably buy Chrono Cross, as I've never played it. I doubt it will be better than Chrono Trigger, but then again I don't really expect it to be.

lol i meant a PSN version? cause my version of CC fopped up when i tried to make an EBOOT.

You need the correct popsloader and EBOOT settings to get it work. However, I think PSPs using PRO CFW can't use popsloader, so this seems to be a relief for all of us.

Thanks guild. I think im on 6.20 i dont know if its pro but FF8 runs fine. And i appreciate the help with CC but i think my problem was my discs were too scratched :(

Great news! Looking forward to download a digital copy of FF6 and Chrono cross for my legit collection, as i still have them on their box for my old PSONE. As for FFV i just hate that one.. Evasive story, poor characters, too much a sandbox on the jobs, definitely not my thing. Fixed class FTW!

A POPSloader was released for PRO.

Seems a bit limited though.
