So I just hacked my Wii, everything works fine, I have a spacious NTFS partition where I keep all my movies and music and a smaller WBFS partition for Wii games. I'm quite a noob here, so I was wondering if there is any simple step-by-step way to watch movies from the hard drive without messing too much? All help appreciated.

Yeah, WiiMC works surprising well of a HDD (usually it crashed every five minutes when I used an SD card); highly recommended, but I suggest you delete the "no_ios_reload" line from the xml file. That will prevent it from crashing. These programs require that an internet connection is established, but you don't need WiiConnect24 on.

WiiMC Works freaking great. I have it loaded on my kid's wii so they can watch all of their movies and Spongebob episodes. They love it. It is easy to use.

Every once in a great while I come across a bug, but I can not replicate it, so I just restart WiiMC and continue on like I normally would.

WiiMC hasn't worked well for me since it dropped 202 support. If you can't get it running, install 202[60]v5.1 rodries mod and download MPlayer CE. It's not as user friendly as WiiMC, but it is more likely to work and much faster.
MPlayer CE is still the superior player. It's much more user friendly and supports more codecs - even 720p mkvs.

I'm not sure if you mean WiiMC or MPlayer CE. WiiMC supports more (it just downgrades the quality btw) and is more user friendly, but MPlayer CE runs much better and is more stable.

No, I really meant MPlayer CE. If you checkout the svn of mplayer-ce, you'll see that it supports a wider range of codecs than WiiMC.

Also, MPlayer CE is easier to use as you don't have to use the pointer.

.mkv's work great for me as long as they are 480p or less.... which is not so common to find on the net as much as .avi's are at the same resolution.
That's not necessarily true. IOS58 really crippled compatibility. Both of my HDDs (and a large percentage of others) are an example of that.
