The Minish Cap gets a native 3DS port with dual/widescreen support

Thanks to the recent decomplication efforts; The Minish Cap 3DS brings the Game Boy Advance classic Zelda title to your 3DS.

The port takes full advantage of the 3DS (sans 3D) and offers various display and layout options including widescreen , stretched and original aspect ratios with the bottom screen containing a map and dungeon/current quest information. New 3DS is also supported with several further enhancements such as improved performance, multi-core rendering and an optional C-Stick turbo mode for fastforwarding gameplay.

The Minish Cap 3DS also includes support for the Project Picori Randomizer, with separate save data for normal and randomized playthroughs.

As with similar fan-made ports like this, no ROM or copyrighted assets are included with the project. Players must provide their own legally obtained copy of the game.

Damn, community once again doing what Nintendont.

I get people want new IPs, but do you realize how easy it would be for Nintendo to do something like this? Bring retro titles back with a few modern enhancements. Don't even have to charge full price...

I agree with your point about bringing retro titles back with some tweaks. that would be cool to see officially from them. but you could see why they'd never create a 3ds version of Minish Cap in 2026 though it does seem exactly like the sort of thing Nintendo would have done in 2013.

Nintendo re-releases on newer hardware are hit or miss. the re-releases of NES games to GBA did not age well, changing the core mechanics of games like Super Mario Bros 2 for example.

I appreciate that we have a great modder community to make this happen though.

Dual screen games on Switch is weird to me.. using the single screen with 2 views in it upsets my OCD. lol

PS. I think adding widescreen to some games change the original experience (eg, Super Mario World widescreen) but it's cool to mess around with.

Why ruin a good game by forcing you to use touch controls?

Like cool they made this, was it needed? No, you can already play the game in a hacked 3DS/2DS.

It is like making a 3DS version of a DS game.

Okay this is really cool but I don't like that it requires the European ROM.

First, I don't own that, second isn't that the one with a kinstone bug?

Edit: I should mention I mean I don't own a copy of the European Minish Cap, meaning I can't legally have a ROM of it.

this will be a fine edition on my Majora's Mask limited edition New 3DS LL

thanks to all those who put the work in to add another option of playing a zelda game to the table.

oh crap i thought it would take the US Rom which i own the game of that as well. maybe they will have an update to make it so we can use our legal copies of The Manish cap

It says it supports USA ROMs but might have bugs due to certain parts acting different.

"Recommended ROM

Both the USA and European versions are supported, but I highly recommend using the European ROM.

The European version is the ROM I used throughout the development and testing of this port, so it has received by far the most testing.

The USA version should be compatible, but it behaves slightly differently in some parts of the game, so you may encounter bugs that are not present when using the European version.

The European ROM also includes multiple languages, including English, so there is generally no disadvantage to using it."

That's what it says.

To preface what I'm about to say: This is an awesome project, and I appreciate the developer making it happen. The enhancements absolutely make this worth the effort.

That being said, the idea of making a native port of a game for a system that can already run the original natively is very funny to me. It's a very homebrew-ey thing to do, and I love it.

Widescreen is implemented? The lower screen has map, item, and quest information? There's Randomizer support? New 3DS-specific enhancements? They really went to town with this port. Kudos to the devs.

It inspired me to see what Minish Cap is going for on the open market, and it's still super expensive. Expect to pay about $100 USD for the game, but there are tons of repros for about $15 USD posing a real carts.

Come on, be honest, you know this forum would complain about 'lazy greedy Nintendo'.

Frankly, I'd rather they just sell the ROMs for a reasonable price and let the community do it's thing given them time to remake Star Fox again.

I love this a lot. I don't like Claude being listed in the contributors like all recompilation and decomplication projects being made nowadays, but I love this. I wished people made this without the reliance on artificial intelligence like we've been doing since the birth of this world.

I tried this port on my N3DSLL, a few weeks ago. It runs fine, however there is not really much gained by playing it this way, over GBArunner2 or even emulating (maybe easier to setup?). Besides that, due to scaling and such, it looks decent bit worse than it does on my DSi XL to my eyes. If you go with Blur effect, it will looks......well.......blurry. Really blurry. Not having it, makes the game look very 'jaggy', in a quite a weird way. Pixel Perfect, just makes the screen really small, which kinda ruins the whole point. Sadly, that is kinda the case for every GBA game I tried on my 3DS, compared to DSi XL. Metroid Fusion in particular looked just bad, for some reason, while Kirby: The Amazing Mirror looked pretty close to DSi, just slightly worse.

Been some time since I tested it, but I don't think it being 'widescreen' changed much either, compared to running GBARunner. If you have a DS (especially DSi XL) or even actual GBA, playing it there would imo, be the better experience. If not, you have a choice between pixel perfect or just this 'larger', but very 'pixelated image.

Now, this guy's Link to the Past port looks really good on my 3DS. It being an SNES game, it has aspect ratio that is preeeeeeetty close to what you got on the 3DS, so there are no such issues. Widescreen there also works perfect.

Touch controls from what little I played are not really used for anything other than settings. Bottom screen is pretty much used for the map and HUD elements.

Edit: It would be lovely if it's been mentioned that it uses AI in the OP's statement.
Whenever I saw him post on reddit, he does mention the use of Claude. To what extent, I couldn't really find out, since every time I try to look at commits made by 'it', it shows as a blank.........
