GameStop CEO says Sony's decision to go disc-less is 'totally irrelevant' — claims software, including physical discs, accounts for only 12% of the company's business

Software revenue fell by 27% in one year
The CEO of GameStop — one of the world's largest video game retailers — has said that Sony’s decision to halt the production of physical game discs in 2028 is “totally irrelevant” to the company's business. Speaking to BloombergTech in an interview on Thursday, July 16, Ryan Cohen made the comments while responding to questions on how console makers’ going disc-less might affect GameStop amid the company's controversial bid to buy eBay.

When asked, “If the hardware makers are reportedly moving to disc-less on the console side, future game launches are digital only, where does that fit in for the business plan?” Cohen responded, “It doesn’t matter at all. Software, it mattered in the past. Software today makes up less than 12% of the business, and collectables makes up over half the business. So, it’s totally, totally irrelevant.”

Meanwhile 327,416 PS5 owners have digitally signed the Change.org petition to get Sony to change its mind while 98,483,331 PS5 owners can't be bothered because 99% of gamers really don't care.

By the way: "Meanwhile, revenue from collectibles — covering apparel, toys, trading cards, gadgets, other pop-culture products, and submission services for authentication and grading of trading cards — grew by 47%."

GameStop has a thriving business in dust collectors/gaming garbage that is growing by leaps and bounds. Why should they care about the vastly-shrinking physical disc market?

they will be begging for discs to come back when their shelves are empty what will they do stock them with all digital codes? no one is going to get off their ass, travel to a store to buy a digital code when they can just use the psn store from home

I mean, literally all Nintendont Swatch II owners still will.

Well yeah, GameStop made themselves irrelevant to the used game market long ago. Used prices too high, trade-in offers too low.
They made an absolute fortune off idiot gamerboys who would trade in a $50 game for $5 credit when they could have gotten $25 on eBay and then use that $5 credit towards a scratched up $20 copy of a game that sells for $10 on eBay. And in spite of their alleged irrelevance, they are still going strong.

But the point is that retailers couldn't care less about the death of console physical discs. It's just not a big part of their business and hasn't been for a while.

350,000 PS5 owners have digitally (ironically enough) signed the Change.org petition. That means only 98,000,000 have not and cannot be bothered as they don't care one bit. 🎈🎈🎭🎭🎈🎈🎇🎇

we are all able to be called fools by God. it is not up to us to call others idiots, and I have seen many do things that were not sound. likewise, vengance only belongs to God, not us.

that said, the point about the taking away of personal rights and property has indeed been advancing. some would prefer to slow or halt that process.

What I find so funny...

For almost 3 decades every company (yes you too rock*) did physical.

And now they do a pop shove it (in your face) and suddenly remember that you can squeeze more money out of customers with digital.

Good thing for me I just remember that chibi me was very smart and got a 100% discount code back when gba, nds and 3ds were around.

I will do that again.

Thanks industry. You opened my eyes. An I can even backup my "very much properly aquired games" on a hdd and play them offline.

Well, but get BR from where ?

Mr.Sony had a monopoly.

Noone can do them.
Think about it.

Frigging DVD, CD and yes EVEN CASSETTE outlived "the best new medium"

My poor lil bluray player. I feel sorry for it *pat pat*

I'm seriously glad the industry bound together when $ony tried their memory-stick-in-their-bottom and invented microSD to spite them.

Sony has ascended too high into the skies from all that helium and excorted music dealership money.
Must be bad for their thinking.
