New Witcher 3 expansion announced, set to launch in 2027 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series

With news being so sparse on the upcoming entry to the series, CD Projekt Red have today announced a new expansion for their 2015 hit The Witcher 3. Titled Songs of the Past, the expansion is touted as one last hurrah for Geralt before new protagonist Ciri steps up for the next title.

CD Projekt Red said:
Songs of the Past is a brand-new full-fledged expansion to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, one of the most acclaimed role-playing games of all time.

Created in partnership with Fool’s Theory, a team comprising veteran The Witcher 3 developers, players can once again take on the role of Geralt of Rivia and embark on a brand-new adventure before heading out on the Path as Ciri in the upcoming The Witcher 4.

Songs of the Past is set to release at some point next year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles, and be of a comparable size to the game's previous major expansions. With the press release not mentioning the PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch, it is assumed these platforms will not receive this content.

Desperate flailing against blood of dawnwalker a game done by the REAL witcher team.
Ciri being the main character of witcher 4 was narratively right I guess, Geralt story feels finished by the end.

But I don't want to play as Ciri, her sections in the witcher 3 were my least favorite. I'd much rather play as Geralt, or a genius move would have been to make your own Witcher. That would have been great. But again the real Witcher team left to form new studio.

Dammit, so that's why they did the UE5 remaster ("next-gen version") some time ago...

At least it looks like it's possible to use the save from RED Engine and have the UE5 version recognise it. Saves are even cross-platform, for that matter.

The massive increase in minimum specs for PC would certainly prevent the Switch 1 from getting it, considering how much work and optimization it took to get it running in the first place (the only platform where they shifted tasks like cloth physics to the GPU).

Quite. They can't repeat the Cyberpunk incident again, so the QA walls for Witcher 4 to be approved for release must be insanely high.

Just use a different game engine. Like if they start making the game with Unreal Engine 4 now and stay with it by the time the game releases in like 7 years anything current by then would be able to run the game, assuming the AI slop crash happens one or two years before the game releases because current Ram prices are insane.

Engines don't really work like that for gigantic games, tho. There is a cost x benefit of working alongside engine devs and graphics card manufacturers that usually ends up on the side of "use the latest to get them to craft things AROUND your game, not in spite of it".

As for RAM prices, they will come down in the next few months. China gave us MoE, so RAM is not as essential anymore.
