Digital Nintendo-published titles to be cheaper than physical releases going forwards

yoshi.jpg

Starting from May with the release of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, digital versions of Nintendo-published Switch 2 exclusives are set to be cheaper than their physical counterparts. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is now set to cost $69.99 for physical copies, with digital buyers saving $10 at $59.99. Though this is new for US audiences, it should be noted that this has been the case since the system launch in the UK, EU, and Japan. For comparison, Mario Kart World retails for £74.99 physically, with the digital version being £66.99. Similarly, the recently released Pokemon Pokopia retails for £66.99 physically, with the digital version being £58.99.

read between the damn lines instead of being such a loyal little sheeple. WHY do you think they are doing this? Why make physical cheaper huh? I'll tell you why it's because their keycard bs failed miserably so this is a trap to get people hooked onto digital only. within a year those keycards and all other physical releases won't exist anymore.
But Nintendo doesn't use GKCs for their games, so your explanation makes no sense. Maybe instead of focusing on who you think is a sheep, you shoulld stop being a troll.

There's also the point that this has been a thing since launch in other regions lol

a $10 difference? Guess the only way it will be $20 difference is if they sold retail games at $80 instead of $70. How dumb of me to think they would just drop digital titles to $50 when they want to sell retail $70.

Maybe WWIII wouldn't be so bad after all?

Nintendo could cure mortality and aging and people would still keep whining.

So we would be leasing a digital game for $10 USD less compared to its physical version... What a bargain!

Nintendo Clarifies 'The Cost of Physical Games Is Not Going Up' Following Decision to Charge Different Prices for U.S. Physical and Digital Switch 2 Games

Update 1:49pm PT: Nintendo has issued a statement to IGN in response to our inquiry about the Switch 2 game pricing change, following confusion regarding whether this was Nintendo effectively concealing a quiet price increase by making physical Switch 2 games more expensive, or if it is in fact Switch 2 digital games getting cheaper.

Nintendo's statement is below:

"The cost of physical games is not going up.

"This means that when Nintendo sells digital versions of Nintendo published games exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 to consumers in the U.S., those prices will have an MSRP that is lower than their physical counterparts.

"Retail partners set their own prices for physical and digital games, and pricing for each title may vary."

I do wonder when this eShop discontinuation will come. We can still redownload Wii, 3DS, and Wii U games. It'll be an interesting marker if/when they actually become unavailable.
I think we've reached the point where consoles are just going to stay backwards compatible. So chances are we won't see the current eShop close. Just lose a few games each generation that arent compatible for hardware reasons.

I was convinced when opening this thread that the announcement is that digital versions will be $69.99 and that physical would be $79.99.
I think Mario Kart World was the canary in the coal mine for that price point, and the vast majority of copies ended up selling as part of the bundle instead, so Nintendo silently backtracked on it.

A lot of people actually thought this from their announcement but IGN later got a confirmation from Nintendo that physical games will not be getting more expensive. It's simply that digital games will be cheaper.

The way I see it, digital games are not getting cheaper. Physical games are just getting more expensive.
Yeah, but physical games getting more expensive already happened, that is not actively happening now. We're over that hump. Digital games are falling back to what they would have cost before the price increase.
