Hey, all --

I wanted to let you know that I'm planning on retiring from work in the public hacking scene.

Atmosphere (and my work on the Switch) have been an enormous labor of love for me for the past eight and a half years, and it's been an honor for me to dedicate so much of my life towards this kind of work.

That said, I am getting older. I find myself with less time to dedicate towards it, more responsibilities, and a changing personal life.

Particularly with my hoping to have kids in a foreseeable time horizon, I'm thinking I have to re-evaluate how much time I can spend on hobby projects.

I have the kind of personality that doesn't want to put in only a little work; I think that less-than-a-full retirement would likely lead to no actual changes in the time I put in.

I've truly appreciated getting to work with so many talented people (many of whom have been close friends for so many years), and I appreciate everyone's understanding as I try to transition to the next phase of my life.

With all my love,
SciresM

Guess that was the last time we update our Switch's FW.

Yeah I don't know that there's a ton of great games left on Switch 1 but probably a few. Nintendo is probably not going to put anything else first party on Switch 1 I would guess, but some third party stuff. It sucks that he won't be around for what is hopefully a hacked Switch 2 that hurts the scene. But I don't blame him getting out after 8 years.

I don't blame him because the original Switch is already near its death bed and Nintendo at some point will pull the plug. Having to continue maintaining the most popular custom firmware that led the Switch scene for nearly 8-years is hard work.

My best wishes go to him and his future family.

To be fair, people should have stopped updating their Switches a long ass time ago. There hasn't been a good update in forever, and there's not really any worth a shit games coming out. I hope he enjoys his retirement! I look forward to whoever picks up the torch from here! :grog:

So long and thanks for all the hacks! Well, not being able to update SysNAND is gonna suck - makes me wonder if I should cancel my NSO sub.

Well... Seems like this is the death sentence for Atmosphère and any updates for it - so you can say goodbye to homebrew permanently if you accidentally flash a newer HorizonOS image.

However, real life always comes first -- so I thank him for all the work he's done for Switch homebrew and wish him a good life.

Thanks for everything and enjoy your digital retirement, SciresM!

That said, what is the latest Firmware - Atmosphere combo that works? If one wants to update, right now would be the best time, right? Before another update drops.

Maybe the next update will add themes and proper folders. :tpi:

SciresM's retiring won't kill the Switch hacking community and there are a lot of talented developer team can update the Atmosphere if Nintendo update the firmware.

As for SciresM, you will be deeply missed and thank you very much for hardworking with Atmosphere development. I wasn't happy to see a lot of people don't have a respect when they asked about when CFW will be updated, so I told them to be patient and wait.

It's a miracle how long he kept the project alive and, above all, remained steadfast towards Nintenodo. Thank you! Atmosphere has over 70 contributors, which gives hope that someone could take over. But on the other hand, ~99% of the commits are from Scires. It remains to be seen.

Thanks for all the good work, SciresM!

Does this mean that once Nintendo updates the firmware, the "trick" to transfer one's EmuNAND's saves to a Switch 2 will not work anymore?

You might have to wait longer for updates to Atmosphere but it should get updated one way or another. The Switch homebrew scene is not lacking in talented devs.
