Hey everyone. Has anyone tried playing local multiplayer in this game? I have a New 3DS XL. I successfully connected to the internet through the "Nintendo DS Connections" menu using my phone's hotspot, having removed any security beforehand. However, when I entered multiplayer mode through TWiLight, I noticed that I had no connection bars in the upper left corner of the screen. It's as if I'm not connected to the network. The game manual shows four signal strengths, from weakest to strongest, so I think I should have already seen the connection in the menu. I have "Wi-Fi" enabled in the TWL Menu settings. Does anyone know if it's possible to play this game in more than just single-player mode? If it matters, my friend has a regular 3DS XL.

As the game is only for local multiplayer, it has nothing to do with your wifi connection.

Are you able to play other DS games together with your friend?

We haven't tested other DS games yet, as we're most interested in the cooperative Legend of Zelda. I haven't bothered him yet because I want to figure everything out myself first, so I can explain it all to him later.

Let's assume my friend and I are in the same room, have the same game versions, and Twilight Menu (or we're launching the game through the main menu, having previously done so via ndsForwader, for example). What do we need to do to join each other? Is it possible we need to use the official 3DS program - "Download Play"? If you understand this, please explain. And apologies if the questions are silly; this is my first time dealing with local multiplayer on the DS/3DS family.

Does that mean you haven't even tested Four Swords yet..?

Is it possible we need to use the official 3DS program - "Download Play"? If you understand this, please explain.
That feature is for DS games (or 3DS games) that can be played with a single cartridge. Most multiplayer DS games required each DS unit to have its own cartridge (or its own eShop download), but some games only required one unit to have the actual game; in that case, one unit would start the game, and the other DS units would start "Download Play".

This is abundantly well-documented and I'm sure you find more information all over the Internet with a minimum of effort if, y'know, you want to figure everything out yourself.

Neither Download play features are needed.

Simply just open the game, choose your desired save file then it will ask if you want to do "multiplayer" or "single player"
obviously in this case you want the first option, the person who will be player 1 will choose "create a group" everyone else
will choose "join a group".

Download play is for games like mario kart DS and or Mario Kart 7, that will allow one that doesn't own the game to participate within cooperative play (this isn't always the case, pokemon BW/2 and animal crossing WW use this feature for different endeavors), not all games support this but you will primarily find this within more flagship titles, Zelda Four Swords AE, is a DSiWare title and was not made with this feature in mind.

Please note that both require your friend(s) to be within proximity of your console, not over Wi-Fi

Huge thanks to everyone for your replies!

This was way easier than I imagined :)

I installed Twilight Menu on my DSi yesterday, and today, I paired it with my N3DS without a hitch. It's all working absolutely brilliantly.

Thanks again for the help!
