I think it's safe for me to say that The Game of the Year Awards is actually called the Expedition 33 Awards

Nah they came out with 11 although it's been 7 years before that 9 and 10 were during the PS3/Xbox 360 era and they keep coming out with collections. I'm sure it'll come out they may make us wait 7 more years before there's another one though.
i still have the pain of cancelled megaman legends 3

Wait, Nexon tried to hide that they made Dave the Diver to pass it as indie?? I'm honestly not surprised to hear that as much as I was surprised by the sheer fact that it was Nexon who made the absolute gem of the game (and before looking up the publishes, Korean vibes were oozing from the styling as it is).
Well, the game was listed in the Indie debut category iirc, and I don't think Nexon was even credited, they aren't on Steam either so it feels more secretive. But in E33's case, there's Kepler Interactive quoted alongside Sandfall without any shame. Indie doesn't mean anything to them I guess

Not much came out original that can match up to it, for once we got a year, where one game stood out, can't hate them for giving us something unique and original.
Not to mention it hit in all categories and is a great game. Even before the dumb game awards, this game was praised from day one release!
No wokeness, no politics, etc.
Just great story writing, amazing soundtrack, great gameplay, and great characters throughout.

Why not, right? Not like the NS1 version won't work in an NS2, for one. And of course, the other means get more mileage.
It's great that it's still getting games, but I imagine they'll all be third-party games now. I don't think Nintendo will release any games from its own franchises for the NS1, or who knows, but I doubt it.

It's insane that this is such a rare sight in the AAA gaming space nowadays...
I always wonder how much of this is kids just now starting to gain an iota of media literacy. There was no shortage of games from the 80s/90s with underlying political or cultural messages. Creative people tend to be anti-authoritarian, and with good reason.

Also "out 2027" ...jesus christ anouncing a game 1 year in advance is idiotic, let alone 7! Like it was with metroid prime 4.
Eh, examples like Prime 4 are why I have no problem with announcing a year in advance of release, but that should be the maximum.

Last edited by Xzi,
what an absolute garbage year for gaming 2025 was
I can't imagine how niche your taste in games must be to believe that. It was an especially busy year for casual racing games and roguelikes, but name any genre (aside from RTS) and I can name you at least one game that was a critical/popular success.

It's great that it's still getting games, but I imagine they'll all be third-party games now. I don't think Nintendo will release any games from its own franchises for the NS1, or who knows, but I doubt it.
I don't think there are any 3rd party titles left that Swatch 1 can still pull well either.

Ok
Hero Shooter
I pretty much refuse to acknowledge this as a real genre since they're just FPS games but worse. That said, if you insisted on playing one anyway, Deadlock or Marvel Rivals would be the way to go (Rivals would technically be award eligible for this year).

Not much came out original that can match up to it
Lol come on, I'm sure it's a great game but maybe it's time to pretend nothing happened this year. Arc Raiders and Silksong were there too, and they're absolutely incredible. Both of them could have been GOTY imo

So a game that released last year, and a moba :ninja:

What hero shooter was released this year?
Fragpunk is the only one I can think of. Liked the playtests very much but just couldn't stick after launch. It's creative in a lot of ways but I'm tired of all those search and destroy counter-strike/valorant wanabees (and flopped hard very fast, but it's still there. I've heard it has an audience in China)

Unfortunately, the trend of putting "hero-based" bs into anything doesn't look like it's stopping ... Marathon will be out, and this "Highguard" couldn't even get creative on the name lol. It's literally "Overwatch" with synonyms. Maybe I should make a new FPS game too, name it Shout of Commitment and hope for the best

As I said, games that release in December aren't award-eligible until the following year. Not that a hero shooter would ever win anything other than a community vote anyway. So fair enough, he found a loophole in my statement since I didn't specify premium (non-F2P) games. I'd be even more clueless when it comes to mobile slop.
