This isn't a 3DS -> Switch situation, this is a 3DS -> New 3DS situation.

Switch shares the same HorizonOS with Switch 2 like the 3DS shared the firmware with New 3DS, so Nintendo isn't going to discontinue Switch 1 updates without also discontinuing Switch 2 updates.
But you get where I'm coming from, right?

No. It isn’t a 3ds->n3ds situation. The APU is not compatible between the two. These frequent updates have mostly been to fix compatibility issues with Switch 1 games, on the Switch2. There was no such thing as having to patch things for O3DS games to run well on N3DS.

8 years in, and we still don't have any themes besides black or white. On the 3DS, we got themes, (also user-made themes which were usually way better), built-in mini-games to play, puzzle pieces to collect, and StreetPass was a blast. The 3DS truly had us eating good. The Switch could have been even more popular had it had any of that stuff, as it is portable afterall.

I've essentially lost hope that we'll ever get themes or an actual folder system at this point.

Even Playdate, a much cheaper and smaller console with a 1-bit display and games under $10 each is getting Playdate OS 3.0 soon with better folder support than the Switch 2 has, not to mention that you can always load alternate home menus if you don't like the default one.

It's for playing games, who cares what the home screen looks like
