Nintendo Switch firmware 20.2.0 released

1752542221250.png

A new Nintendo Switch firmware is available. So far seems no new keys are generated, and FW 20.0.0 Keys decompress the 20.2.0 firmware; sigpatches will need an update, SYS-Patch should work fine. So far the only app affected is NXThemeInstaller which needs new patches. Bootlogos nor PNGShot are affected.

Ver. 20.2.0 (Released July 14, 2025)

  • Fixed an issue where Parental Control settings were not transferred from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 in certain circumstances during a system transfer.
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.

@impeeza I only use the sys-patch v1.5.6, which makes all exefs_patches, kip_patches and the patches.ini of Hekate superfluous. I have been using this since FW release 20.0.0 and it runs like clockwork. Even the nosigchck entry in hekate_ipl.ini is no longer needed.

Please Nintendo let this latest update ride into the sunset with the switch 1

I'm tired of updating my homebrew :'(
you should expect that switch 1 will receive the same os updates as switch 2 until the switch 2 is over

and even then, the next console might keep the same os and continue the os updates

they want old and new to be compatible with each other (with stuff like game share, and backwards compatibility), so os updates will apply to both consoles

Same here. I updated to a Steam Deck a few months ago and it's SUCH a better experience. I haven't used my Switch since. I wish I'd gotten one around Nov. 2023 when they got a price drop, but better late than never. I COULD run Switch exclusive games on it, but I'd rather save the space and just use original hardware to play them.
For me the problem is that I'm always going back to Switch. Even tho I can have better experience somewhere else. I sold my other handhelds except for PS Vita, they were just not fun to use for me and I still wonder what's the reason. Maybe the simplicity of operating system and usage itself speaks to me. I love tinkering with devices, but the more I was focused on this, the less I was just playing games.

INI:
[CFW - AtmosphereNX (V2)]
pkg3=atmosphere/package3
pkg3ex=1
emummcforce=1
atmosphere=1
icon=bootloader/res/icon_payload.bmp
nouserexceptions=1
userpmu=1
cal0blank=1
usb3force=1

[Non Hack (OFW)]
pkg3=atmosphere/package3
stock=1
emummc_force_disable=1

Even though it's not yet mandatory, I strongly recommend switching to a pkg3 configuration
Yes, sorry, thanks for that. I have actually set up a pkg3 ini file and have used it but it still results in the black screen. See below for what I used:
Code:
[config]
autoboot=0
autoboot_list=0
bootwait=0
autohosoff=0
autonogc=1
updater2p=1
backlight=100

[Stock - sysMMC]
pkg3=atmosphere/package3
emummc_force_disable=1
stock=1
icon=bootloader/res/icon_switch.bmp

I have separate SD cards for Stock sysnand and for EmuMMC CFW, so I only keep one boot option on each ini file as a precaution.

If you have any tips on how I can fix the black screen, I'd be super appreciative. I think the next thing I'll try is syspatches instead of sigpatches.

Patches for this release
Sorry for double posting but I noticed that the patches.ini file for this one only has two lines in it:
Code:
[Loader:152EF3D39AD44123]
.nosigchk=0:0x5F8E:0x1:01,00

Previous patches.ini have a lot more in them. Is this patches.ini file meant to be used with sys-patches rather than with sigpatches? Or do I just add those two lines to the latest patches.ini file in your main sigpatches thread? (Thanks for maintaining that!)

Use just sys-patch, you don't need sigpatches.

I'm waiting for new Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi and Fading Afternoon myself. I hope that lowering master key and system version while installing them in sphaira (if they'll require higher fw) will help. If not, I'll just play them on original fw. Metroid 4 will for sure require 20+.

I'm also just tired of updating things, this is a handheld for games. Sys-tweak that I'm using doesn't even work on 20+, so that's one of the reasons that I'm behind, and the amount of free RAM.
Can you explain more about this please ?

Lower master key

encrypts the keak (key area key) with master key 0, this allows the game to be launched on every fw. implicitly performs standard crypto.

Do note that just because the game can be launched on any fw (as it can be decrypted), doesn't mean it will work. It is strongly recommened to update your firmware and Atmosphere version in order toplay the game, rather than enabling this option.

It is recommended to keep this disabled.

Lower system version

sets the system_firmware field in the cnmt extended header to 0.Note: if the master key is higher than fw version, the game still won't launch as the fw won't have the key to decrypt keak (see above).

It is recommended to keep this disabled.

So far I didn't have a chance to even test this.

I've been using emuMMC basically forever. That's the only part that gets updated regularly. Even then, losing the yo ho ho sites that keep it possible to download direct is going to hamper things.

Unfortunately my ISP hellscape means that I get a copyright whine every time I use a torrent. They haven't done more than that yet; but it's a hassle I would rather not keep dealing with.

I believed that I would stay on 19.0.1 until I discovered that the latest updates of TOKT, BOTW and EOW make them need the latest FW version, so I had to go to the 20.2.0... 😥
Those patches are only really meant to make better use of Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, if you are playing on the original Nintendo Switch they are pretty much useless, just stay on the second last patch.

Theoretically the only exceptions would BOTW and TOTK, as they add new localization (if you speak pt-BR), but even those have already been backported to their previous versions to make them compatible with 19.0.1.
