Can Switch 1 versions of games on Switch 2 carts be dumped on a Switch 1?

I have a Switch 1, and I have no plans to buy a Switch 2 for a couple of years, but I'm trying to decide if I should grab the Switch 2 version of Metroid Prime 4 for when I eventually can play it on the more-powerful hardware. In the meantime, I was planning on dumping the game using my Switch 1 to play it on the PC, but I'm not sure if this is only doable with the Switch 1 cart, or if it'll work with the Switch 2 cart, since it's the Switch 1 version on there. Have the Switch 1 versions of games like Breath of the Wild and/or Tears of the Kingdom been dumped from the Switch 2 carts using a Switch 1, or is that not possible right now?

They are ethier Switch 1 carts that have the Switch 2 related updates, or are Switch 1 versions of games that are going to be released on Switch 2.

You're not going to get anything from those S2 Updates if you use an emulator because the Switch emulators and thier mess of forks only emulate the S1's hardware, and the S1 versions of the games are the S1 version of the games, so chances are you're not missing out on anything.

In the case of Metroid Prime 4, it's more likely than not going to come with a separate Switch 2 version, so if you want to dump the Switch 1 version, you're better off dumping that version when the game comes out if you intend to get the game and avoid double dipping for the S2 version.

I tried to dump my copy of Pokémon Legends Z-A (S2 version) but couldn't dump the "Initial Data" part. Said something about Initial Data being inaccessible on T2 cartridges. So... yeah.

Generally speaking it's cheaper to buy the Switch 1 version of the game and buy the Switch 2 upgrade pack on the eShop than buying the cart that includes the upgrade pack on cart. Just something worth considering.

It unfortunately doesn't. Pokémon Legends Z-A is one such S2 cartridge that works perfectly on the Switch 1, yet its' "Initial data" cannot be dumped. At least not with NX Dump Tool or MIG Dumper. The XCI and the other partitions are dumpable however.

You're still buying the game physical but instead of $30 extra for the physical Switch 2 edition the upgrade pack on the eShop is only $20 (or in some cases more like $10)

That's the regular price, most stores always have the physical games cheaper than the eshop/psn on release.

I got two copies of Pokemon Z-A on pre-order, the Switch one wound up being free with a buy 2 take 3 deal and the Switch 2 copy was sold for 59€ (with the pre-order goods). They are both on sale on amazon now, Switch one for 41€ and Switch 2 for 46€, still cheaper than digital.

It has to do with store sales, our minimum wage is 818€ net (this year, last year was 760€), if they don't create sales often, they don't sell as much given that most people can't afford games that easily. A smaller profit margin is better than no profit margin I guess.

This thread got me curious, so I just installed Prime 4 on my OLED fw 20.5.0, using DBI: 658. From my Switch 2 cart. Seems to be installing just fine. (50% so far). If you only care about playing it, I'd say there's no problem.

EDIT: Yea, no problem at all. Took out the card, launched the game, and it's running. Don't understand why anybody would think it couldn't be used. The Switch 1 HAS TO be able to read the whole thing, or it would never even work. Plain and simple.

Instead of dumping it directly, install it directly, then make a dump of the install. I just did this with Prime 4. Not the dumping part, but I installed it, and it plays without the cart. Don't see why anything would refuse to dump the working one (from the install).

I think the problem is that the "initial data" is needed for MIG. Otherwise just the XCI alone is all you need.

Ahhh, ok. But the OP wasn't asking about the mig. Just asked about being able to dump it for the Switch 1, to try on PC. I wouldn't know if PC emulators run it, or how well, but I would say it's a definite yes.

Does anybody know if this "initial data" issue happens with the MIG Flash Dumper (hardware)? I'm assuming it's the certs?

Minimum wage went up there, sure, but so did food prices and etc so not as if the people are really making more money.

The nice thing about Portugal is the food, weather, beer, wine, bread, the people, and low rents (unless you live in a city they'll rip you off).

I never did say the minimum wage increase was great. The way things are, the increases actually make things harder for most people. Median salaries are getting closer and closer to minimum wage and prices just keep increasing. Also, the low rents thing is not valid anymore, unless it's literally a village in the middle of nowhere, expect to pay 700€ upwards for a studio.

Anyway, I was mainly talking about the game prices and why some stores do sales like that.
