So when I receive it, even if I'm in 20.1.1, and I insert the SD card into the switch, it will automatically ask me to update to 20.1.5?

If I disconnect it from wifi before inserting the SD card, can i make the sd card update without the system update ?

I am pretty sure the update is only needed if the card is formatted in exfat. As you need a license to use exfat and the sd card update activates it. FAT32 does not need any license, and you should be able to use your microsd express without any update if you format it in FAT32 (in your pc). Please test this and let us know.

I didnt had any microsd express, but i tested using a normal microsd formatted in FAT32 to transfer images to switch 2 (which is the only thing you can do with a nomal sd card), and it worked without any additional update.

Its the same on switch 1. FAT32 works without any additional update, exfat requires an update to use.

As far as I know, theres nothing special about microsd express cards they are just much faster sd cards. So the situation should be the same.

Yes, but I was wondering whether it was possible that the update had been downloaded and that an SD express card had to be inserted for it to be installed.
As mentioned by the user above me, and some above those, the microsd express driver is in 20.1.1 (or was it 20.1.0?). With that, microsd express cards will work.

What you needed to download on the Switch and Switch 2 is a license, and the driver, for exfat support. Since this is not free, instead of paying for a licence for every Switch, Nintendo probably only pays for the ones that get activated. This keeps costs down. I'm not sure by how much, but every penny counts!

But is Exfat required ?

So when I receive it, can I insert it directly into the switch and the Exfat update will take place without any problem (without it forcing me to upgrade to 20.1.5) or do I have to format it to fat 32 on a PC first?

I'd also like to say a big thank you to everyone who replied to me, it was very kind of you all, despite my silly questions.

As the download is for exfat, you'd need to use fat32. However, I'm not sure if Nintendo requires express to be exfat or not.

No, if its like switch 1, and im pretty sure thats the case, then exat is not required. You can also use FAT32.

Your card will come formatted in exfat, if you insert it directly it will prompt an update for the exfat license, which will also probably force you a system update. You have to first format it in FAT32 in your pc with something like guiformat http://ridgecrop.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm

Test it if possible, and let us know how it went.

4GB per file.

Yes, but its not a problem as the other user said. If you download a 20gb game into an sd card that is formatted FAT32, the switch automatically splits and organizes the file parts, theres no difference to the user if the card is FAT32 or exfat

Do you try with a switch 2 game on a sd express?
And how do you know if the futur hack don't need a iso file?

I'm curious if there's a game cart with the firmware update 20.1.1?

Staying on this firmware doesn't mean it's hackable, but doesn't hurt if you can/want to stay.
