Nintendo’s Switch 2 is the fastest-selling game console of all time

The Switch 2 has reached a record-breaking 3.5 million units sold in just four days.

Nintendo was expecting the Switch 2 would be just as successful as the original, and it’s already become the fastest-selling game console of all time after a strong launch. Nintendo revealed today that it has sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units in the console’s first four days, surpassing records for any of Nintendo’s hardware within the same launch period. But the record is more significant than that.

Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners, points out on X that the Switch 2 is “the fastest selling home video game console of all time.” It took Sony 16 days to sell 2.1 million PS4 consoles, and six weeks to reach 4.2 million units. The Switch 2 has also comfortably beaten the PS5 launch, which debuted during the pandemic and associated chip supply constraints. It took seven weeks for Sony to sell-through 4.4 million PS5 units.

It should outsell the lifetime sales of the Steam Deck by the weekend.

That's about the same amount of units sold as the NES Classic Edition but much less. Doubt this would sell at such a huge margin and overtake the first-gen Switch. Still, that's quite a large number regardless.

2.5 million of those sales at least were japan preorders. its not really that impressive imo. lets see the numbers at christmas time.

they prepared to outsell the out launches is really the only thing that should be said at this point. not that they outsold other consoles. nintendo used to artificially scarce their product upon launch to build a frenzy. there isnt really going to be a sustained frenzy unless it gets CFW in first year imo..

Not sure if this is a troll post, but only an extreme minority of Switch owners actually bother to hack their consoles or pirate games.

The 2.5 millions pre-orders from Japan were not actual pre-orders... those numbers were the amount of people registered for the lottery system to get a pre-order.

Yeah. They have this lottery draw system over there. You registered with the vendors of your choice, Nintendo, Amazon JP or whatever and wait to see if you're lucky enough to get pick. They don't even have midnight launch and you can forget about going to the store and buy one. And that's just a Japanese only version. If you want the international one, you're better be damn well lucky.
