Switch 2 Joy Con teardown shows a marginal redesign

joyc.jpg

Since its launch in 2017 the Switch has faced heavy criticism in one area above all others: the Joy Cons. And it's not just any part of the Joy Cons either, with the sticks being an incredibly common point of failure for users of the system. Dubbed "Joy Con drift", the detachable controllers seemed to gain a mind of their own as a particular part of the stick wore out faster than anticipated, leaving your inputs lazily moving to one side. Third parties have stepped up in recent years, offering sticks that use magnets for their sensors, removing the most common point of failure for many. But this isn't 2017, and we're not talking about the Switch anymore.

In the lead up to the Switch 2's launch a Nintendo VP confirmed that the console would not be using the drift-resistant Hall effect sensors many have put into their Joy Cons. It has been speculated that this is because of the mounting mechanism for the Switch 2's Joy Cons making use of strong magnets, but little was set in stone as to how Nintendo would address the underlying issues. Thanks to a teardown posted by TronicsFix earlier today we finally have our answer. You're probably not going to like it.

In their teardown they show the finicky process of opening up the controller, and the unfortunate truth that the analogue sticks are only marginally different. Though it is too early to tell whether the changes made will be enough to limit the dreaded drift, the lack of updated technology will undoubtedly be a disappointment to those who had to deal with the issue on Nintendo's previous system.

i mean, has anyone checked the metal and contacts? if they're more erosion robust than before, or if the prongshave a little more pressure, thats really all this needed.

Isn't it funny how some 3rd party Chinese knockoffs work better than the official ones?
in what fantasy world is that?

i've regretted literally every half price controller i ever bought in the last 2 decades

Yup, Nintendo just announced they will replace drifting joycon 2 controllers for free. Which means they know they will be prone to drift. Makes no goddamn sense, because there's no way that's more cost effective for them than simply using Hall Effect sticks in the first place.
because no stick is free from drift, even hall effect sticks aren't drift safe forever

I'd wait for more knowledgable people to check the contactmaterial and prong mechanic before making a true judgement on these.

I'll wait a few years until the guinea pigs can tell me if there will be drift or not.

FOMO and hype driven intentional limited supply bullshit does not affect me
Why, the SW1 still has drift issues.

This be why Nintendo changed it's agreement preventing you from suing them.

Also, yet another show of pure greed from Nintendo part, Nintendo Switch Welcome Tour is an almost belligerently un-fun interactive tour of the console’s new features … that costs money.

That's right Nintendo is literally charging money for a tutorial for their console while Sony have it away as a short game for free to all PS5 owners.

Astro's Playroom this is not.

So I called it correctly. "Joy-Con Drift 2: Magnetic Boogaloo".

Lmfao.

Well Nintendo will be replacing a lot of joycons here in the EU, since its mandatory to give 3 years of warranty after purchase.
Same sh!t happens with Xbox gamepads and i usually send back to be replaced 1 or 2 times during warranty.
Not the EU, just a few countries in the EU.

For example, my country's in the EU and our Nintendo distributor wants $20 to fix a drifting Joy-Con.

I'll save you some years - yes

It's disgusting they can sell millions upon millions of products, knowing they will fail. If ai were to pay them will a card, knowing payment would fail, it would be a very different story

This goes for Microsoft too, from what I hear even Sony

Well, did I hope for more... yes.
Did I expect more ... not really.
How do they feel ... Ok, better then Joycon 1's.
Will thee get drift ... Sadly seen some people have it out of the box ... so yeah.

Kinda get why Nintendo didn't mention anything ... but not a great situation.

All I really want is an Analogue Pocket Switch that plays Switch cartridges in a durable, technologically competent handheld. I would continue buying official cartridges. But I'm not buying this outdated, time bomb hardware.

A meteor could smash into the Earth tomorrow and all you who held off getting Switch 2 will be in Hell having to live for eternity with he knowledge that you never held Switch 2 in your arms.

Imagine. Never getting to pay $450 + $10 to make a game I already own a little smoother and then paying $10 extra to train my eyes with a soccer ball so I can appreciate the difference. An eternity knowing that instead of that, I spent the money on actual cartridge games for the actually fine system I already own. How will we live with ourselves?

There's going to be cliques in hell, Switch 2 owners and people who never owned Switch 2. I don't want to risk being in the group that can't relate to other Switch 2 owners.

Updated technology? I thought hall effect sticks were already part of the dreamcast controller.
