Hall Effect Joy Con 2 Review

More and more sellers on AliExpress are now selling the first Joy Con 2 Hall Effect sticks.

It’s been only a few days, they do feel stiff in comparison but have some advantages to those who installed replacements in the Switch 1 Joy Cons.

1.) No calibration was needed, maybes it’s a one off but worth mentioning, I’ll test additional pairs
2.) They have not in the last few days experienced any magnetic interference
3.) You can still update your Joy Cons with the sticks installed, so no detection or prevention from Nintendo
4.) You have to do a lot more teardown and remove the board to get them installed. (this was not needed with the Switch 1)

Have any questions or tests to run? I’ll keep personally using them to provide longer term feedback and reliability.

i just checked them out on Ali , how is the experience so far after almost a month of you buying them i assume ?
im willing to buy them after my sticks start drifting ( hopefully they do by the time extremerate release thier switch 2 custom shell ) so i can swap them in the process and maybe upgrade the battery too

Good, still working great with no issues to report. I made several pair and they all work great still, they feel a tad different than the original sticks but that was the same experience with the Switch, they never feel exactly the same.

Haven’t seen that happen, I have one pair with an issue where they don’t stay centered perfectly, it’s both Joy Cons in one specific pair. I can’t say what the manufacturer did to alleviate any potential interference but the magnets while connected do not cause any issues.

Nintendo never said that. It's just hearsay and people making assumptions.

Theoretically, the magnets can interfere and that might well have been a concern for Nintendo but I doubt they actually tried it to confirm.

The magnets aren't that close, so if it has any effect it's probably minimal (and calibration might be enough to solve it), putting the sensor on the side furthest away from the magnet also helps mitigate potential issues.

Edit: For the record the HD Rumble motors use electromagnets and they never caused any interference either. I think the interference concerns are a little bit overblown.

I call bs, If the magnets on joycons were the concern why wouldn't they implement hall effects in the Switch Pro 2 controller?

Out of all major players in the market only Valve were willing to implement them just makes you wonder. Not Microsoft, not Sony, not Nintendo.

What I'm saying is that they weren't planning on using hall effect sticks regardless. Maybe that wasn't clear enough.

Yeah I mean if they used such cutting-edge tech as what Sega used in the 90s, they wouldn't be able to maintain their profit margins! How are they going to sell more $100 controllers if yours doesn't break?!

To be fair, Sony and M$ are also guilty of this, but their controllers don't cost this much.

Having cartels running the show would never result in good things. Not only are they robbing customers, they are creating too much ewaste. Eventually law will catch up to them and force them to adopt new technologies.

I mean, you're mentioning their premium controllers. If you asked me earlier I'd say those premium controllers are a scam - not exactly a galaxy brain take. Nintendo doesn't offer premium controllers, just their absurdly overpriced regular controllers. As late as last week I saw a new xbox controller for ~$30 on Slickdeals.

You can say that the Big 3 want to sell more controllers after they drift but I've also read that pro players say the traditional ALPS sticks are better than Hall/TMR.

Depends on how you play. If you set deadzone to 0, TMR will appear to have a slight drift. Some dislike them for this reason.

Switch 2 Pro is meant to be their "premium controller", whether it deserves that moniker is another matter, but it has "Pro" right in the name so that's how they're positioning it. I do agree that they're a scam though.
