THREAD:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rock Band, Just Dance and Guitar Hero has downloadable songs that you were able to buy and download when the Wii Shop Channel was up. Back in the day, people would install a small WAD, and then they could get whatever song they wanted for free. Since the Wii Shop Channel closed, this is no longer possible. There is a new way to install song DLC, follow this tutorial to do so.

The process to do this is different from installing a WiiWare or Virtual Console WAD. Instead of installing the WAD to your Wii (which will not work), we will use a tool called wad2bin that will convert the WAD to a format you can install directly on your SD Card. Please follow these instructions carefully and then you can use the DLC. It’s a long process, but it’s fun.

Also, if you are wanting to get DLC working with Rock Band 3, you can also install Rock Band 2 DLC for use with that game.

What you need
Instructions

Section 1: Preparing

1. Get the WADs that you want in the folder these instructions are enclosed in.
a. “Big WADs” contain WADs with all the DLC, but they are large. For Rock Band, these come in multiple parts. If you want to use the big WADs, make sure you have enough storage space on your SD Card.
b. “Split WADs” contain WADs with individual songs. This is good because you can pick and choose what WADs you want to install.
2. Copy xyzzy-mod to the apps folder of your SD Card (and Wii Mod Lite if you don’t have it already).
3. Launch xyzzy-mod from the Homebrew Channel, and run it to dump some keys. These are unique keys that are required in order to use wad2bin.
a. This only needs to be done once, if you want to install more WADs later, you don’t need to run the tool again.

Section 2: Patching IOS
  • If you load your game you want to use DLC with using the Disc Channel, follow the steps in Section 2.1.
  • If you load your game you want to use DLC with using a USB Loader, follow https://wii.guide/cios to install the optimal cIOS if you haven’t already.
Section 2.1: Patching IOS for Use with the Disc Channel

You do not need to do this if you’re using a USB Loader. For each IOS listed here (IOS37, IOS56, and IOS57), if you patched them once you don’t need to patch them again.

1. Launch Wii Mod Lite from the Homebrew Channel.
2. Go to the IOSs menu.
3. Select the IOS corresponding to your game.
a. If you want to use DLC with Rock Band 2, select IOS37.
b. If you want to use DLC with Rock Band 3, Just Dance 2-4 or Guitar Hero, select IOS56.
c. If you want to use DLC with Just Dance 2014-2015, select IOS57.
i. Just Dance 2014-2015 is known to have some strange issues where the DLC doesn’t work. We have managed to get it to work on USB Loaders.
4. Press the A Button.
5. Select Install IOS.
6. Select the revision corresponding to your IOS.
a. If you selected IOS37, select 5663.
b. If you selected IOS56, select 5662.
c. If you selected IOS57, select 5919.
7. Press the A Button twice.
8. Press Right on the +Control Pad.
9. Press Down on the +Control Pad.
10. Press Right on the +Control Pad again.
11. Press the A Button.
12. Select Download IOS from NUS.
13. Wait for it to finish. When it’s done, after a few seconds you will be sent to the previous menu.
a. If you get a screen saying “Exception DSI Occurred!”, try this process again.
14. Exit Wii Mod Lite by pressing the HOME Button.

Section 3: Making the WADs

This section needs to be followed for every time you want to install songs.

1. Insert your SD Card to your computer.
2. Open wad2bin.
3. To the right of “Path to SD root”, select the “...” button and set it to the root of your SD Card.
4. To the right of “Path to keys file”, select the “...” button and select the keys.txt file in the root of your SD Card that xyzzy-mod made.
5. To the right of “Path to cert file”, select the “...” button and select the device.cert file in the root of your SD Card that xyzzy-mod made.
6. Fill in the title ID corresponding to your game.
a. Games

i. If you’re using the USA version of your game, type 45 at the end of the ID.
1. For example, Rock Band 3 would be 00010000535A4245.
ii. If you’re using the Europe version of your game, type 50 at the end of the ID.
1. For example, Rock Band 3 would be 00010000535A4250.
7. Only if using Rock Band 2, select the “Use nullkey” box.
8. Select “add wad” to install one WAD file.
a. Or, select “add folder” to install a folder of WADs.
9. Select “run”.
10. Make sure that it created a folder with .bin files in a subfolder of /private/wii/data/ on your SD Card. The private folder needs to be at the root of your SD Card.
11. Move the WAD file starting with “00010000” and ending with “bogus.wad” to a folder called “wad” in your SD Card.

Section 4 - Finalizing

This section needs to be followed for every time you want to install songs.

1. Launch Wii Mod Lite from the Homebrew Channel.
2. Go to the WAD Manager menu.
3. Select the folder on your SD Card called “wad”.
4. Highlight the WAD file starting with “00010000” and ending with “bogus.wad”.
5. Press the - Button.
6. Press the A Button, and then press it again when it prompts you to.
a. Ignore any errors.
7. Now in the menu where you were before to select WAD files, highlight the same WAD file again.
8. Press the A Button, and then press it again when it prompts you to.
a. Ignore any errors.
9. Load the game you made the DLC for and test it out. (If using Just Dance 2014 or Just Dance 2015 with a USB Loader, make sure you're using cIOS 249 installed with https://wii.guide/cios )

RB3 plays audio previews of DLC songs from SD card correctly for me. I watched few videos and think GH games on Wii cannot play preview of DLC songs from SD after all ...
Yes this is confirmed correct...I installed all Guitar Hero DLC on a new SD and WOR only plays audio previews of the original content. All DLC have no audio preview.

So I finally got around to testing both Rock Band DLC and Guitar Hero DLC on Wii U through vWii. After hours of frustration with no luck with either, I dug a little bit further in this thread and another similar thread and found the working formula for vWii!

Thanks to @Sander1974 instructions I overlooked, those instructions proved to be golden!!!

Instructions attached below...:)

Edit 2:

So I have ran this through my new Wii build and my 1st vWii build... The results are identical for both Wii and vWii. 606 Guitar Hero DLC with 710 available songs on WOR and 997 available songs for RB3 with 83 being original RB3 content and 914 being DLC.

In conclusion, vWii performs identical to big brother OG Wii. The key is visiting Wii Shop Channel if using vWii to use DLC, otherwise it will never be detected to be enjoyed.

These are fantastic results and truly not expected! Not positive if this method will last for long so I will buy another 128GB SD and trick my 2nd Wii U with this as well. One can never have too much backup and the Wii is the goat! :)

Complete RB and GH DLC (Wii & vWii) Install Instructions...

Wii Guitar Hero DLC install steps...

This is only tested working through USB loaders,
using the actual disc(s) could work but not tested on my end.

This is tested working on NTSC (North America) original Wii with...
[SXEE52] Guitar Hero 5
[SXIE52] Guitar Hero - Warriors Of Rock

PAL machines and vWii may give different results!

This does not work for World Tour!! DLC will still be corrupted
if attempting to play DLC thorough GH World Tour. Howeverc GH5 &
GH WOR will see the WT DLC and play it as intended.

------------

Before installing any DLC, please delete both
Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero WOR save files from the Wii.

I do not know if the is absolutely necessary
but i think it gives the best chance for success.

You will need both GH5 and GH WOR games installed on USB.
Again, this may not be mandatory, it is possible WOR is the
only game you need installed for all DLC to show up but GH5
was used to bridge the DLC on my setup.

------------

1. On PC, run wad2bin and select your SD root path, then keys path,
then cert file path. Now type Parent TID 0001000053584545. Do not
forget to include the extra 45 for NA or 50 for PAL ^^^^^^^
Now click add wad and select Guitar Hero 5 DLC.wad for wherever
it is located on your PC, click run. When finished, place your
newly created dummy.wad into the "wad" folder and rename to
GH5 DLC.wad. Eject your SD PC and insert into the Wii. Using any
wad manager (I Used YAWM ModMii Edition), first uninstall, then
install the GH5 DLC.wad. Now open your preferred USB Loader ...
(I Used Wiiflow Lite) and boot Guitar Hero 5 for the 1st time.
Let it do its thing and you should see pop-up it is scanning for
DLC. Now check for and hopefully find GH5 successfully imported
the GH5 DLC.

2. Back to PC, open wad2bin again and follow above procedure for
SD, keys, cert file. Enter Parent TID 0001000053584145. Click
add wad and find and select your Guitar Hero World Tour Import.wad.
Click run & when finished, open SD and rename the new dummy.wad to
GHWT Import DLC.wad and place in the wad folder on root of SD.

3. Staying at your PC, open wad2bin again, repeat necessary steps
and enter Parent TID 0001000053584945. Click add wad, find and
select your Guitar Hero Warriors Of Rock.wad, click run. When
finished, open SD and rename the new dummy.wad to GHWOR DLC.wad
and place in the wad folder on root of SD.

4. Again staying at your PC, open wad2bin, repeat necessary steps
and enter Parent TID 0001000053584545. Click add wad, find and
select your Guitar Hero Smash Hits.wad, click run. When finished,
open SD and rename the new dummy.wad to GHSH DLC.wad and place
in the wad folder on the root of SD.

5. Open wad2bin again, repeat necessary steps and enter Parent TID
0001000053584545. Click add wad, find and select your Guitar Hero
Band Hero.wad, click run. When finished, open SD and rename the new
dummy.wad to GHBH DLC.wad and place in the wad folder on SD.

6. Final step... open wad2bin, repeat necessary steps and enter
Parent TID 0001000053584545. Now CLICK/CHECK THE USE NULLKEY BOX!!!
Click add wad, find and select your Guitar Hero World Tour.wad,
click run. When finished, open SD and rename the new dummy.wad to
GHWT DLC.wad and place in the wad folder on the root of SD.

7. Eject your SD from PC and insert into the WII. Now open your
wad manager and uninstall then install these wads...

GHWT Import DLC.wad
GHWOR DLC.wad
GHWT DLC.wad

Open your USB Loader and again boot Guitar Hero 5 for the 2nd time.
After scanning for DLC, click Options, then Rock Archive. SD should
show 460 DLC installed. Back out to main screen and select Quickplay
and you should have 552 songs available for GH5.

Now exit GH5 and boot Guitar Hero Warriors Of Rock for the 1st time and
create a profile. At main screen click Options, then Rock Archive...
SD should now show 606 DLC installed. Back out to main screen again and
select Quickplay and you should have 710 songs available with 16 of those
locked.

WII Rock Band DLC install steps...

I used split wads and separated the Rock Band DLC into separate corresponding folders...

SZAE = ROCK BAND 2-1.WAD
SZBE = ROCK BAND 2-2.WAD
SZCE = ROCK BAND 2-3.WAD
SZDE = ROCK BAND 2-4.WAD
SZEE = ROCK BAND 2-5.WAD
SZJE = ROCK BAND 3-1.WAD
SZKE = ROCK BAND 3-2.WAD
SZLE = ROCK BAND 3-3.WAD
SZME = ROCK BAND 3-4.WAD

It was time consuming but believe it was time well spent using split wads since there
is a 1000 song limit. If you are using the Big WADS, the process is still very similar
either way. Both the Big WADS and Split WADS are marked with those identifications above.

1. On PC, run wad2bin and select your SD root path, then keys path, then cert file path.
Now type Parent TID 00010000535A4245. Do not forget to include the extra 45 for NA or 50 for PAL.
*** Now Click/Check the Use Nullkey box, then click add folder if using Split WADS and select
Rock Band 2 SZAE wad folder for wherever it is located on your PC, click run..(If using Big WADS,
click add wad and select Rock Band 2 SZAE.wad for wherever it is located on you PC, click run.
When finished, open your SD and place the newly created dummy.wad into "wad" folder on the root
of your SD and rename to ROCK BAND 2-1.wad.

2. For the sake of making sure the DLC is being recognized, eject your SD from computer and
insert into your Wii. Using either YAWM ModMii Edition or Wii Mod Lite, first uninstall then
install the Rock Band 2-1 SZAE.wad. Now open your preferred USB Loader and launch Rock Band 3
for the first time and hopefully the DLC will be recognized and begin to assemble. If everything
worked as expected we can continue the exact same procedure for all Rock Band 2 wads.

3. Eject SD from Wii and insert into PC. Run wad2bin and select SD root path, then keys path,
then cert file path. Type 00010000535A4245 for NA Wii content or 00010000535A4250 for PAL content.
Click NullKey box, then click add folder or wad for SZBE wherever it is located, click run.
When finished, open your SD and place the newly created dummy.wad into "wad" folder on the root
of your SD and rename to ROCK BAND 2-2 SZBE.wad.

4. Staying at your PC for the three remaining Rock Band 2 wad folders OR wad files, do the exact
same procedure as above remembering to always check the NullKey box. Rename the dummy.wad files to
their corresponding content and place into the "wad" folder with names of ROCK BAND 2-3 SZCE.wad,
ROCK BAND 2-4 SZDE.wad and ROCK BAND 2-5 SZEE.wad.

Now would be a good time to check if everyting is running correctly on your Wii. Eject your SD
from your computer and place into Wii. Run Wad Manager and uninstall then install these dummy wads...

ROCK BAND 2-2 SZBE.wad
ROCK BAND 2-3 SZCE.wad
ROCK BAND 2-4 SZDE.wad
ROCK BAND 2-5 SZEE.wad

Now open USB Loader and launch Rock Band 3 for a second time... hopefully
the DLC is seen and will assemble.

5. Eject SD from Wii and place into PC again, we now install Rock Band 3 DLC. Using the exact same
procedure as GH and RB2...run wad2bin and select your SD root path, then keys path, then cert file path.
Now type Parent TID 00010000535A4245 if using NA or 00010000535a4250 if using PAL. For Rock Band 3
content you DO NOT click/check NullKey box. Now click add folder for Split WADS and select Rock Band 3
SZJE folder for wherever it is located on your PC, OR click add wad and select Rock Band 3 SZJE.wad if
using Big WADS, click run. When finished, open your SD and place the newly created dummy.wad into "wad"
folder on the root of your SD and rename to ROCK BAND 3-1 SCJE.wad.

6. Staying at your PC for the three remaining Rock Band 3 wad folders OR wad files, do the exact
same procedure as above. Rename the dummy.wad files to their corresponding content and place into
the "wad" folder with names of ROCK BAND 3-2 SZKE.wad, ROCK BAND 3-3 SZLE.wad and ROCK BAND 3-4 SZME.wad.

7. Eject SD from computer and place into Wii. Run Wad Manager and uninstall then install these dummy wads...

ROCK BAND 3-1 SZJE.wad
ROCK BAND 3-2 SZKE.wad
ROCK BAND 3-3 SZLE.wad
ROCK BAND 3-4 SZME.wad

Now open USB Loader and launch Rock Band 3 for a third time...
hopefully all Rock Band 3 DLC is seen and assembled.

For Guitar Hero 5 and Warriors Of Rock, use my original instructions I post a few pages back for original Wii. 1st run wad2bin for GH5, when finished, uninstall then install the GH5 DLC dummy .wad and then launch GH5 for 1st time on vWii, if you have not visited the Wii Shop Channel yet, your DLC will not be seen, if you have or when you do, your DLC will gather for GH5. Now eject SD and return to PC! Use the instructions again for the rest of written tutorial and return to vWii when finished.

Now uninstall then install these dummy wads in this order...

GHWT Import DLC.wad
GHWOR DLC.wad
GHWT DLC.wad
GHBH DLC.wad
GHSH DLC.wad

I am not 100% positive if they need to be in this exact order but it is how I got everything (all 710 songs) to show up. If you do not install the last 2 dummy wads, you will not have any GH5 or Band Hero content and only 1 Smash Hits song.
Last time I used only GH WoR and installed dummy wads in this order:

GH5 DLC.wad
GHBH DLC.wad
GHSH DLC.wad
GHWT Import DLC.wad
GHWOR DLC.wad
GHWT DLC.wad

Still got 606 DLC songs and 710 songs total. So, looks like it is irrevelant in wich order you would install dummy wads.

BTW, I installed US DLC`s for US version of GH WoR on PAL Wii, wich was softmoded, and it works just fine.

My wad2bin file shows "failed to convert patch from UTF-8 to UTF-16, process failed." Can anyone help me?

Please can someone help me?

I cannot get RB3 (pal) to see my sd card.. Or see wads. I've followed everything.. Even messed up wii u and had to remod it and start again.

I've tried visiting shop channel, mounting the sd card within RB3 and it just says error.

Sd card is formatted to fat32 (this is the 2nd card I've tried).

I've run a sys check but it won't let me upload the report to the sd. I've deleted the RB3 saved data. Ive got the game on a hard drive. Been using usb loader gx, yawm. I'm so stuck!! Thank you.

Did you copy the keys from your console as they need that, there is tooling for that, other than that did you get the DLC's from a place you trust? I have 3 consoles with RB3 but never seen this message, make sure you run that also in Windows 10

Sorted myself.. Visiting the wii shop was no good.. Couldn't install the zelda channel as I had no Nintendo ID stored... So now added an ID, installed zelda channel, deleted all my RB3 stuff again!!! Re did it and hey presto.... Just need a guitar haha.

Did anyone get RB2 DLC working on actual RB2? Either through USB Loader GX or Disc Channel. I only got it working through RB3 on USB Loader GX but I wanted to play them on RB2. RB3 doesn't look so good on CRT.
I followed the guide throughly and used a 2gb SD Card. RB2 through USB Loader GX reads the card but never detects the DLC. RB3 detects it just fine.

I also tested GHWT with the same SD card through Disc Channel and had no problems. There was an 'outdated' warning but just by visiting the archive, everything worked just fine.
