This is a very basic patch for Itadaki Street DS, the predecessor to Fortune or
Boom Street for the Wii. Like the Wii game, it is a crossover of Super Mario
and Dragon Quest characters into a board game resembling Monopoly.

This patch translates the character names, venture cards, and most of the
graphics that form the main gameplay menu, the stock menu, the buy/sell/
trade menus, ranking screens in-game, and the board settings menu.
It does not translate system messages, the main menu, or any character text.

Most of what is done is very rudimentary, and I feel that I have come to the
limit of about what I can feasibly do by myself. I release this as a proof of
concept. There is room for improvement: some graphics are heavily abbreviated
in order to fit into the allotted space. But I believe this patch translates
enough that anyone familiar with the Wii game should be able to play without
outside assistance.

Current progress update:
With the help of Zane and MechaDragonX, the kanji have been identified and the text mostly dumped. Translation is now underway.

The patch has been updated to v0.1.1.

Truncated long character names to seven characters to fix graphic corruption in the Monster Colusseum. Crashes have been reported there, but I could not reproduce them when testing on MelonDS. Any further reports are appreciated. Also fixed a few typos.

I can understand Japanese, so I'm interested in helping out! I've never worked on game translation since I don't have the hacking skills, but I have translated manga and videos. If you're interested, I can send you some of my stuff in a DM. Uhh nvm I joined to reply to this thread so I can't do that yet

Hello, thanks for the offer. Right now the picture of kanji up to the row ending with 軍 has been identified, leaving the bottom 13 rows still to go. I know where all of the text is, though the partial dumps are in no state to be translated at the moment. If you could identify these, that would be great. So long as every character is identified in order, I'll be able to make it work.

Are you sure just doing that would work? The way kanji works is that they represent words. There are many different words that use the same character, including ones who's meaning don't reflect the constituent character. Are you able to change text irrespective of their origin? Either way, I can do the next row right now. Except for one I couldn't recognize I'll look more into

happiness
thought
talent/age
participate
child/particle/girl
thought
I/me/my
celebrate
weird/perverted/change
world/generation
life/birth
fortunetelling
group
man
heaven/sky
convey/transmit

I think the Japanese characters are considered foreign keywords so I can't send them

The way editing most text in the rom works is that I can replace any character with any other character. I don't need to worry about having every example of the kanji for happiness getting changed when I change one example of it. I've attached the file of what's already been done: what I need currently are just the specific kanji in Unicode, not the meanings. I know you said you ran into some sort of spam filter, but so long as I get them in any capacity I'll be fine. When I have all the kanji in plain text, I'll be able to fully dump the script, which can then be translated.

For the future, I do have the ability to dump the text from the .itms files that consist of most of the game's text. However, it does not use any standardised encoding and I can't identify the kanji in order to cleanly dump the text. Below is all the kanji found in the standard font ripped from the arm9.bin file.

Identifying these would allow for most of the game's text to be dumped. From here, a translator would be required in order to translate the text: most of what graphics I did translate are borrowed from Fortune Street.
Nice work. I love Fortune Street and I always wished the portable versions were localized, I did try the PSP version with its fan translation which can be played multiplayer with a single console which is cool. But it lacks the Nintendo characters (obviously) which is a bit of a bummer, so I was sad that the DS version didn't have a fan translation before. I briefly tried it in Japanese and was able to mostly figure out how to navigate menus, but it is a little confusing to play when you can't read the venture cards or settings menus. So even though this isn't a complete translation, it makes the game a lot more playable.

I wonder if we will ever see another installment of Fortune Street on a Nintendo console, it would be nice to have a version on a current platform. I don't really play on the Wii anymore so I resort to emulation when needed but it would be nice not to have to. Switch (2) would be the perfect platform for it. To me Fortune Street is the perfect compliment to Mario Party, it can take quite a while to play so it's not always suitable but it's just as much fun with the right people, and the perfect thing when I feel like playing something a bit different than the usual. It is a shame that most of the series has never been localized.

Though, there is a smartphone version which was localized apparently. Maybe that's worth a try. I can only seem to find the iOS version though.

I see what you mean now. I have everything now and I fixed a couple of them. I should probably do a check over everything, but this should work for now. Any spot with a question mark means there's just some kinda symbols there that aren't text. The dice icons are included tho cuz that's in Unicode

Perfect: that's what I was looking for. I'll still need to test some things such as figuring out the control codes before I'll have the text dump ready, but I can handle that by myself.
Thank you!

No problem. Glad I could help! I'll have some time later today to do a check over the entire thing, so I'll let you know if anything should be changed.

By the way, when you dump the text is there a way of finding out when in the game a given line appears? That would helpful since Japanese is a high context language, so there's a chance I won't be able to tell what's left implicit. I think it should be fine for a party game lol, but I thought I'd ask

The files are arranged in such a way that every character has their own file: all of Mario's lines appear in Mario's file, for example. Menu text is also broken up into several different files for different menus. Beyond that, I think the only way is manual testing.

Ok. That seems simple enough. If we mess up tho we'll always find out when we test tho so it should be fine lol

I changed a couple characters. An annoying thing with Chinese characters in Unicode is that they use the same code point for simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, and Korean hanja, and sometimes not. So if a character looked off at all I replaced it just in case. The way the system works is based on fonts and not everything knows what it's getting is Japanese. Either way, I can definitively say everything's good now :yaynds:

Ooookay ignore the double post lol, I goofed
Also the patch works fine, I’m just an idiot lol
Can’t wait to see if it becomes a full translation!

A quick progress update: the text has mostly been dumped and translation should begin soon. Have a screenshot of a Notepad++ window so I can at least show some evidence.

I'll have to check Fortune Street Wii 's files (I'm just away from my PC at the moment, hopefully tomorrow). It's possible they might've recycled the text from the DS version and thus a translation wouldn't be needed! I've seen a similar case of Itadaki Street Portable's text being reused for the PS4/Vita version.
