Installing Update and DLC via DBI

Hello. I'm trying to install a game's DLC and an update using DBI. What folder on my sd card do I put the update file and DLC? Also, do I have to connect my Switch to my PC via USB in order to install these files? Or, can I just open DBI, navigate to each file and select it without being connected to my PC? Will the update and DLC work the next time I play my physical copy of the game? Thanks!

That's not how I usually do it. Check this video for more info. Basically, download the files you want to install to your PC, run dbibackend.exe, select the files you previously downloaded and run the server. After that, open up DBI on your Switch while connected to the PC and choose to install games from the dbibackend.

I've never used DBI in such a way so I can't really tell. I assume that it's possible to do so but that would require having files on your SD card already. Sometimes files can be bigger than 4GB therefore I never use this method personally.

Will the update and DLC work the next time I play my physical copy of the game?
They'll work as long as they are installed correctly (and not removed manually) and for the right region of the game.
 
Thank you so much for the information. Apart from updates and DLC, how would I install a game backup or NSP file? I think Daybreak could be used, but I can't recall. And then, the backup file goes into the "switch" folder on the sd card, correct?

The same way you'd install the update or DLC, no? DBI can install XCI, XCZ, NSP and NSZ files.

Daybreak is used for installing firmware.

And then, the backup file goes into the "switch" folder on the sd card, correct?
Not really sure about what you're talking about? switch folder is where you put your homebrew apps in NRO format.

Alright. I think I have successfully installed the update and DLC for my Captain Toad Treasure Tracker game card. Now, when I insert and run the game, do I need to be in emuMMC? Or is running the game in sysMMC or stock fine? (This is on a banned Switch like I mentioned before). Also, when I have finished installing the NSPs, can I delete them from where I chose to install in DBI? I drag and dropped the files into "NAND install" to install them on the console instead of the "SD card install."

Depends on where you've installed them.
If you were in sysMMC CFW and installed them to NAND, they're on NAND.
If you were in emuMMC CFW and installed them to NAND, they are on your emulated NAND that's located on your SD card (either as a hidden partition or as files).

I've only been using emuMMC so far so I can't tell, but I believe that there's a method to use the same files on both sysMMC and emuMMC CFW if you install everything that you want shared to the SD card. I believe that you need to change some paths in the emummc.ini or something so that both sysMMC and emuMMC are using the same Nintendo folder. Ok. I believe I was in emuMMC when I opened DBI and ran MTP responder to connect my Switch to my PC via USB.
Would I just connect my Switch through USB and open MTP responder again to check where the files are? There is a "Switch" drive that pops up next to my local drive in file explorer on PC. Is that where I can delete them? As for uninstalling games, do I just delete them as I usually would on the Switch home menu?

Not sure how MTP transponder works, but that's not the method I'm using (I'm using the dbibackend only). I believe that you can remove them if there are any, but I believe that they get removed as soon as they are done installing i.e. you shouldn't see them next time your connect your Switch to the PC. I could be wrong, though, so do check and see if they are there.

As for uninstalling games, do I just delete them as I usually would on the Switch home menu?
That's how I uninstall my games. I believe that DBI has an option to remove them thoroughly, remove tickets and whatnot.

May I ask how you use the dbibackend only without MTP transponder? I think I got mixed up with something. Do you just connect your Switch to PC via USB and run dbibackend?

I've linked previously to this video tutorial that I used a while ago for that. If you have trouble connecting DBI on the Switch with the dbibackend on the PC, check the video's description. You need to download Zadig and install LIBUSBK for DBI for it to work properly.

When you drag them to install, they're installed directly, the nsp is not stored on the console, so there is nothing to delete. The drive should always show up as blank, I believe (as it's only for installing and you can't uninstall games from there)
If you are on a banned Switch then there is no need to use emuNAND at all.

Sharing games between sysNAND and emuNAND is not quite that simple, the games will only show up on the NAND they were installed on. If you install the game on both it should probably work though (and they can share the data) but that takes longer. There is probably a way to copy the tickets between them so that the files on SD are recognized, not sure though.
Save data is still specific to sys or emu, since they're stored in the NAND partition, so it's probably best to just stick to one or the other.

I do have another question regarding sigpatches. I didn't want to create another thread on this topic because I have seen quite a few about sigpatches on here. I'm trying to install Tinfoil, but neither the Applet Mode or Self Installer will load up. I have tried pressing R while opening a title to get to the full RAM version of the hb menu, (without "Applet Mode" in red on the top right corner of the hb menu that you see if you choose "Albums"), and running the installer from there, but I get an error saying it is unable to start. I then try running Tinfoil from the icon on the main menu, and see the same error. My only guess is the sigpatches. I have recently updated to the latest firmware and CFW, so how could I check to see if the sigpatches are up to date? Other games boot up just fine, by the way.

For the end users, they both do the same thing. sys-patch as of v1.5.4 has a few more things integrated into it so it offers a bit more than sigpatches and it's easier to update and maintain, less files - less clutter, etc. I've switched to sys-patch a year or so ago and had no issue with it so far.

I have also been trying to figure out where the current version of sigpatches are shown. As well as sys-patch.
I'm not sure if there's any "visible versioning" done for the sigpatches other than impeeza naming his ZIP files with the latest firmware and Atmosphere version supported (and occasional v2, v3, v4 etc. for the same supported versions).
As for the sys-patch, if you have Tesla Menu and nx-ovlloader, sys-patch version is displayed once in Tesla menu (activated if you press L + D-pad down + R analog).

I see. So, for Tinfoil, would you happen to know if I use the applet mode or self-installer for the latest CFW? I think I saw that the last version of Tinfoil I tried to launch was 16.0.

I'm not using Tinfoil myself, but as far as I know firmware 19.0.0 as well as Atmosphere 1.8.0 introduced some changes that broke all of the forwarders. So, if you were using Tinfoil forwarder in the past, you'll need to remove it and create a new one by using this tool. It should work in any mode you run it in afterwards.

I have an original Switch as well that is on 17.0.1 AMS 1.7.1 with Hekate 6.2.1. The sys-modules version is v1.2.2 -9b114b3. I don't see a sys-patch listed in the Tesla menu, however. This console is banned, by the way. For AMS 1.7.1, what sys-patch and Tinfoil versions would I need? Tinfoil had trouble booting up on this console, too.

Think of it as a shortcut on your home screen. Once you install e.g. Tinfoil forwarder you'll have it appear among games (and other forwarders) on your home screen and you'll be able to run Tinfoil from there, instead of going into Album (applet mode) or by using a title override (full RAM mode). Running homebrew apps via forwarder starts them in full RAM mode so it can be convenient to have them on home screen for some users.

I would personally just update everything on it to the latest Atmos, Hekate, Fusee, Sys-Patch, Firmware, all homebrew apps you use, etc.
