Is there a way to do this fix without having to mod the vWii?

I want to do it for any Wii injects I’d launch from within the Wii U menu.

From what I understand I’d need another external for a vWii mod.

So I’d rather just have the Wii U modded.

You can actually use an SDCard as well, I launch some Wii games from there. using USBLoaderGX.
But yes, right now (in my experiencie) the only way to fix the chroma shift and overscan is to use evWii + USBLoaderGX frame-buffer. You can either use 720x480 DMCU to get the full output picture without any borders being cut (scaling the image using your TV to remove the black borders) or you can also set DMCU to 640x480 so the DMCU itself will take care of it and not the TV.

Remember that if a game sets the VIWidth higher than 640 and you put "640x480" in the DMCU, you will lose part of the image. So use frame-buffer on USBLoaderGX (plus to fix the chroma-shift issue)

1 year later, I think this is the only post with information I found that actually lead me somewhere regarding the chroma shift issue.

Still, I find that this isn't very consistent, and not working at all for GameCube games. In most cases (but not all), the first Wii game I launch in ULGX doesn't have the chroma shift problem, but if I exit out of a e.g. GameCube game and enter a Wii game, the issue reappears.

Any idea what's going on here, and does it happen on your end too? I'm still a little tempted to just use the Wii and component video instead, to be honest.

You don't need a second USB anymore: https://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-partition-use-partitioned-usb-hdds-with-the-wii-u.656209/
SD card is also an option.

You can mod the Wii U side and install vWii injects. These are basically like the Wii games Nintendo sold in the eShop to have in the menu, and UWUVCI has a great interface that allows you to do this. You just have to get the fork that has the vWii deflicker option, and once downloaded, do the deed, checking the disable deflicker option and then install in your Wii U menu. This gets rid of the deflicker problem

As for the framebuffer, a plugin called evWii allows you to set custom aspect ratios by changing the amount of pixels the console upscales the vWii image to. You can make the image thinner or wider by changing those in the plugin menu
