With a hacked console can a child brick it with FBI?
Well, not brick, if they delete system files there they'd definitely mess the system up.. i would uninstall fbi if you're done installing games..
Is there a way to change button combination for entering gm9?
Not sure, but you can delete GodMode9's .firm file so he couldn't access it (when holding "start" on boot). This applies to when the sd card is inserted, when it's removed, he could still access it if he holds "start" on boot (accidentally)..

How about teaching the child to use the applications correctly… or to not use them at all if the kid is too young to understand everything? "If you play around with GodMode9 hexeditor, you'll get what you deserve!" Which essentially means 😡This😡 )
I'm not a fan of the electronic babysitter. Sociological and educational problems aren't solved well with technological methods. Anyway, I'll try to answer your question to the best of my knowledge:

Gaining full access to a device (which B9S does) and not being able to destroy the operating system are diametric.
However, Nintendo provides basic "Parental Controls" making starting certain software require entering a 4-digit pin (which does nothing to stop a kid being able to read and type "3DS parental master key" into a search engine). I guess the HB Launcher Loader doesn't provide an age setting which should make the system default to "adult" (never tried, but on the vWii all custom channels made entering the pin mandatory).

Parental Controls + removal of GodMode9.firm should suffice (though a Rosalina injection is still possible). But again: If the kid can type into a search engine, they can redownload all kind of firm files. A NAND image normally¹ can recover any damage, so a brick isn't permanent. In case of destroyed bootloader ntrboot is needed to get in again.
Further childproofing would require a subtle change in B9S source code and re-compiling it. I strongly advise against this, to not risk software-damaging the console to a point where only ntrboot can repair it.

Uninstall FBI with FBI? If it needed to be installed in the future, how would you install it?

Sorry about deleting .firm, first sounds like you can't access it but then you can still can?

You can either install it with GodMode9 or install it from a 3DSX version of FBI (or just use it as 3DSX) just like you did the first time

If you delete the GodMode9 firm it won't be accessible, but it's trivial to just download it and put it back on the SD thus making it accessible again

Yes. You switch the DP app to the Homebrew Launcher , run fbi (its .3dsx version, as mentioned), then install it (its cia file) as you did the first time.
Btw, uninstall the Homebrew Launcher too if you have it installed on the home menu. Same for any other homebrew apps, file explorers and such..

You put the file back to its place whenever you want to access GodMode9.

There was a post on Reddit the other day that suggests some unscrupulous vendors have started using a "stealth" version of Luma on secondhand units that ignores inputs that would otherwise bring up a menu. Unfortunately no details were provided.
I can't open Reddit in my browsers -- doesn't work, so I can't read that post.

Up to a certain version of official firmware, you could achieve this with Rei-Six (at some point it failed to boot but for some reason it still worked on EmuNAND with higher official firmware). Still, the ability to read and to place files on an SD are enough to get around this.

The -- in my opinion -- irresponsible modification to prevent full access to a modified 3DS requires a custom B9S. This way ntrboot is needed to circumvent the minimalist "locks".

I'm asking this here because I'm 90% sure I'm doing something stupid and obvious:

  • I am playing a ROMhack of Ultra Sun, among its edits are edits to the Type Chart.
  • I want to install the 1.2 update, (mainly so that I can have the Festival Plaza have more visitors, and get the system to stop badgering me to install said update for that game).
  • As the 1.2 update overwrites things like shop.CRO (which contains the items for sale at Pokemarts) and code.bin, I extracted the update via GodMode9 & HackingToolkit3DS, added the various edits (I overwrote all the files in a full extracted version of USUM with the updated files so I could use PK3DS), then copied the two files that changed back into the folder with just the update files, then recompiled the CIA and installed it.
  • After installing that edited update, the "1.2" sticker no longer appears on the homescreen over the game's icon (although the 1.2 still appears on the start screen), and the console still asks me to install the update (not a big deal).
  • More annoyingly, the game has applied the changes to shop.CRO, but not the changes to the Type Chart (which, based on using Xsearch to filter for files edited in the last couple of hours, is entirely contained in code.bin, which was one of the files I copied over).
  • I thought that perhaps there was something going on with other installed game updates, so I tried installing the update .cia on Citra, where it is the only such install, which resulted in the same thing (Pokemarts are changed but the Type Chart remains the same).
I'm at a loss as to how I'm managing to do this, any pointers?

Hi. I want to mod my daughters 3DS XL to back up all her many cartridge games and put them on an sd card for her to play. She likes to use online features like trading pokemon and playing locally with her friends with their DS. Post mod is it still safe to play online and will local play still work normally? Would there be a difference playing a sd card version vs an original cartridge?

Thanks,

Hi. I was thinking of modding my daughters 3DS XL . She has a bunch of cartridge games. I was hoping to back them up and put them all on the SD card for her. Now, she likes to trade pokemon online, play locally with a friend, and other online activities. Would it still be safe to do so playing the backed up games or cartridge games after the mod?

Thanks,
Yep, playing both the backups and carts will be perfectly safe. Basically the only ways to get banned these days are cheating online and credit card chargebacks.

You can try changing "reddit.com" in the URL to "old.reddit.com", I think.

Wouldn't it be easiest just to get a newer version of the hack (or a hack that does something similar) that works with 1.2?

Hey guys,

i found my old original 3DS with firmware 8.1.0-4E, i tried using my old Gateway3DS on it..did not work. (with browser exploit)

So i tried the guide to install LumaCFW from 3ds.hacks.guide with soundhax, but it simply doesn't work. I tried it multiple times, did every single step according to my system version - but the soundhax simply does not boot the otherapp.bin?

What am i doing wrong? It just always says "an error occured" when i try to use the soundhax.

Try to redownload the .m4a file again.

I downloaded it like 10x already, also reformatted the sd card or used a different one.

i chose Europe -> old 3Ds -> 5.X - 11.3

could the use of the Gateway3DS through browser exploit and emuNAND done anything to prevent the use of the soundhax?

Probably not, you can try other enty method like seedminer, ntrboothax etc.

I'd assume you're not using Gateway3DS now that you're installing cfw? Cause it should be on sysnand not emunand..
